Mixed martial arts, or MMA, is one of the world's fastest growing sports.
But in Hong Kong, they're trying to preserve one of the oldest.
Many forms of Kung Fu were orally passed down and new technology could stop various types from disappearing.
Al Jazeera's Divya Gopalan reports from Hong Kong.

That kung fu master looks great for a 62 year old man.

The Iron Ox SPM Pai has a very strong presence in the UK and there are more masters than the late Sifu presented here.

because hong kongers are dealing with serious issues right now, no time to make great movies, no time or interest in their own culture and traditions. A lot of Kung Fu masters moved abroad, teach to westerners, some stay in HK and if you visit the place they use to train, you'll see that they will have maybe more than half the students are westerners too. I say the place they use to train, because a lot of them had to shut down their original school because of the HK real estate situation, they just can't afford to keep the lights on anymore, so often they'll rent space in workshops, or train in parks. The days where they used to train on the rooftop is gone.

Many teachers also don't want to pass what they know. They are distrusting of people after either going through the culture revolution in china, or having so many students come and go.

It's also funny because they can record movements all they want, but there is a lot to be said about what happens internally in the body such as breathing, muscle looseness, and posture that no video or recording can accurately explore.

One's Kung Fu is not another's Kung Fu. 🙏

What a shame that today's society does not have the stomach to learn these hard core arts.

Asma Hong isn't China socialism?
@aehong7332
@aehong7332 7 лет назад
It's not China but Hong Kong. If you don't know what kind of place is Hong Kong, I advise you to make some research. Though China is becoming more and more capitalist even if it's a socialist/communist country...

My mate years ago found out there was some kung fu grandmaster coming to Manchester. When the guy stepped out of the car wherever it was, he said "I heard you're looking for me" and proceeded to attack the poor guy. He was a bit mad my mate though lol.

Hmm- maybe the movements do not help you defend yourself in a fight?

In today's society there are other styles that beat Kung Fu, why dedicate years learning something when you can train in another art that has simple moves. For instance a art like kempo which has a thousand moves at a time when all you had to do is throw a simple punch to get the job done.
@JAllen-wl1lp
@JAllen-wl1lp 6 лет назад
1Blkkato because you would never be able to lay a hand on this guy that is the main reason. Hakka arts came directly from war torn time period they are a closed range and highly regarded skillset. I would never go comparing these styles to anything else and definitely not the chop suey that is found in the west
@damarkisshawn6375
@damarkisshawn6375 6 лет назад
+J. Allen Perhaps you will start studying these arts and teaching people then, huh? Maybe I would try these styles too, the thing is there isn't enough info passed onto me to know.... I mean I've heard of mantis but, iron ox mantis?? I'm positively sure that there have to be thousands more I haven't heard of.

damarkis Shawn I train Chow gar. It is a primary branch of this martial tree
@damarkisshawn6375
@damarkisshawn6375 6 лет назад
Ah.... so it helped to found Chow gar? Hmmmm, so why would anyone want to preserve the art? Is Ox Praying Mantis like a trophy or, is Chow Gar missing some of it's teaching's?
@JAllen-wl1lp
@JAllen-wl1lp 6 лет назад
damarkis Shawn I'm definitely not saying that. All southern kung fu styles share a common root and similarities that can be seen across the spectrum even being linked to the origin of karate as well
