I’ll take that exam in June-July as well, haha🥲(Egypt) When I’m tired and feel like giving up I remind myself that I’m quite blessed that I can take proper education in the first place. It kinda motivates me to do my best. Maybe if everyone in the society including me work hard, we’ll be able to help those who can’t go to schools.
I’m one of the students sitting for DSE this year, and truth to be told yes, the stress is up the roof. The libraries closed down, the school too and so most of the learning was done at home. It was really stressful because the change became overwhelming, there were a lot of distractions, lots of “I dont know what I’m doing anymore” and so, the motivation really died down for the most of us. It became harder and scarier to study. So, for all DSE candidates, don’t beat yourself too much of you get a low mark. You did your best, and there will always be a 2nd chance. We can do this!
The stress level for US students is less because they can take SAT and ACT multiple times in their senior years (usually the last 2 years before high school graduation). Although it is changing, most universities still use SAT/ACT scores as important factor for admission.
@@acid1747 Most Asian foreign students in US are ahead in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) as compared to local students. They are behind in American English.
@@smwk2017 except the english part because obviously that's not their mother tongue and it wouldn't make sense for foreigner english to be better than a local
I know, right? I was like a C+ to B+ student with very few As in the Philippines. And then my family went to Canada and I get high grades and an honorable mention. Granted World War 2 was far more of an interesting subject for me than early Philippine history.
@@questworldmatrix If you want to have fun, try to stay away from U. of Toronto and UBC with large Asian student population. Asian students are very competitive. I was the top Math student in my Canadian high school; once in university, I was just mediocre. You will meet students from Jewish private school, foreign students, other smart people with high IQ there.
@@Pudding_zip Try Canada. Canada has a path for foreign students to become Canadian citizens: student visa -> work visa -> Permanent Resident -> Canadian Citizenship. Canada allows students to work up to 20 hours per week while studying. US is very tough. F-1 visa -> H1B visa -> Labor Certificate -> Green Card -> US Citizenship. In US, racial tension is worse than Canada in my opinion.
Seeing this makes me empathise with them, I recognise my privilege. I need to be more grateful for the things I have, and learn to adapt to the circumstances I am in. Thank you!
great. now I feel like a terrible person for complaining about how hard university life is. I came to hong kong to attend university from Canada and I feel like I cheated. And yet here I am still complaining about life being hard.
Your struggles may not be as severe as these students but that doesn’t mean you can’t complain. Don’t invalidate your own emotions :) It’s natural to complain when life gets hard, what’s important is to keep trying and continue doing your best!
@@chupachups2236 tbh I’m not sure cause I’ve never experienced a Canadian university (first year). But one thing that’s a bit more difficult for sure is the Chinese accents the professors have
This video literally emphasises on the problem of land shortage more rather than the DSE exams. Hope the new government can alleviate the problem by implementing different measures but not using reclamation as a method.
The level of high school should be so that everybody who graduates high school, can enrol in university without entrance exams. I live in a country where there are only entrance exams for medicine studies. Everybody else who graduated high school gets a fair chance. The Asian entrance exams are ridiculously hard for no reason, the American SAT is racist and outdated. Just no exam is the best.
I agree that, ideally, you shouldn’t be required to pass an entrance exam to get into an university. However, getting rid of the exam won’t be easy. Usually, there are just too many participants and not enough seats for them. The universities are forced to make the test hard and competitive.
@@armathillo1298 Extremely competitive uni examinations, imo, isn’t the biggest problem, but the social aspect, how family and relatives of the student show their support, and what the student thinks about themselves as well. Sadly, many (if not most) Asian parents look at the test to judge their children, compare to other kids and be ashamed if it’s even just average, or fair, which, in many cases, amplifies the stress their children have to go through. As an Asian, I specifically hate the pride culture in cases where a family member needs help but the rest of the family chooses to care about what outsiders think, which may make the problem that member is facing even worse. I’m happy to have my Asian parents not stressing me at all on these tests but allowing me to choose what I wanna do.
agree, i definitely wouldn’t have had a chance to go to university if my country had acceptance exams and now i’m close to graduating college, so glad..
Because they wont just let everyone goes into university. Otherwise it wont worth as much. More people would go and pursue higher education. There is this social structure whereby certain percentage goes to university level and certain jobs which requires degree. But there are people who take other professional certs for their specialisation
Really tough... I am a Year 1 Student in HK preparing finals... And even I can barely focus at home as well... I can't imagine how tough they currently are...
so the ideas I got from this video is A)this exam is hard and B) There is no equality between students. So if anyone is reading this after doing bad in this exam it's not your fault and you have probably tried your best so be happy!!!! :)
@@wingkeungkong415 well if you look at other countries (eg France, N America, Germany), it's always the young n those with the lowest opportunity cost who have the courage to speak the truth. As a middle age individual with assets and mortgage, I'd be too afraid. 一般都系年青有为, 心口带着个勇字, 愿意说出真相。 比起我类中年人, 已经被社会洗礼了。
@@vexpressivo you can say that to the red guard in the cultural revolution in China too When you are very Young you have no experience it is impossible for you to have independent judgement on anything
@@wingkeungkong415 hmm hard to say as I was educated in the west n independent critical thinking has been fostered since junior high. Experience is the fear that makes us calculate risk as we age. Look at the children who r wealthy in HK for instance. None of them would be at the front lines as they know too much is at stake for themselves n their parents have secured alternative exit strategies for them already.
@@vexpressivo the real problem in Hong Kong is that the Chinese parent never teach their children to respect other people their children living like princess and prince at home Therefore they attack any people who has different opinion They think they have the right and all of the Hong Kong people should follow their order They do not know that they tnemselves have also become a dictator
The situation could be better for some students. They can focus better rather than be distracted by their friends. I used to have friends like that during exam times. Everyone is stressed then, so some of them will keep asking you out to play or hang out. They will even guilt-trip you to join them and it is difficult for teenagers to say no to peer pressure.
@@Pudding_zip yes it true but few town and cities have studying room facilities but we need to pay the fees not for free Any one those who study hard for the success is a target
And i haven't even touched my syllabus whereas my half yearly exam starts next month. Please pray that i get to visit heaven guys as my death is certain
Journalism major is like psychology major, it will not help her out of poverty. Very selective fews are successful and most of them are unemployed here in Hong kong.
Now that I'm about to begin exam season videos like yours are the perfect ones for enjoy during my breaks not only to relax me & entertain me but to motivate me to push more 💕😁
I am used to study with students in a study group but because of COVID-19, I don’t know who is infected or not ,so I cannot see them. I am not used to studying alone but I will do my best
I’m Chinese and who experienced the entrance exam in China. It’s tough almost harsh i can say. But that’s what only we can hold to achieve a better future. So i choose to leave China then after my graduation from uni.
Someone here who attend high school board exam amidst pandemic in 2020 and can tell you confidently that these tests, scores and university selections are not worth it. Yes, hard work pays off but what’s the point of dragging you too much to the level that affects you mentally and physically. Study moderately and smartly. Go out to the world and have experience. Trust me this cycle of exams won’t end. After high school, there is another scam called university. Just find happiness. That’s it. ❤
One thing I realized is not mentioned is the boundaries. The exam board is limited on what they can do about students who have to live and study in poor conditions what the said board can do is make sure that each individual has approximately the same chance of achieving high. Preparing housing for 20 people even though over 30k people may need it is mostly useless however grading the tests based on the families social class and availability is something that can assist everybody more equally. Although I am not knowledgeable regarding the education system in Hong Kong, them avoiding to mention it seems like the practice is not yet placed.
A person who keeps their desire to a minimum and reaches maximum rationality is a sage. A sage always thinks about how they can benefit and help others.
I like the challenge of entrance to the university,my friend only kbow that im brainless but after i got accepted in the 1st university. I like the spirit of challenge
Entrance examination in India Indian institute of technology ( for engineers students)and neet (for medical course entrance examination )(similar to mit ,Oxford University)f@@k crazy level of stress on student.😅
Studying during the pandemic was the worst and especially in the year for entrance exams. So glad my parents decided to move from Vietnam or I’d just collapse from the education system there
unsure if this is about the student’s chinese or the woman’s english, but usually professionals that speak english in Hong Kong have a bit of a British accent (leftover from our colonial days). there’s also a lot of emphasis on “proper pronunciation” - lots of people pay money to get rid of their Hong Kong accent. There’s a recent poem from Eric Yip about how he was taught proper pronunciation before immigrating that comes to mind. if you were referring to the student - mandarin/putonghua is the Chinese dialect most common in China, but in Hong Kong most people speak the dialect Cantonese :) putonghua has 4 tones, while Cantonese has 6, and pretty much every word is pronounced differently, to the point two people who speak different dialects can’t understand each other
I'll have to go through this in 3 years... but now its choice of subjects (am f3 which is basically 9th grade in the US I think).. science subjects are VERY contested because a lot of ppl say that if u dont take science subjects you will be poor 😖 Already quite a bit of people at my school have already left for overseas Very stressful but I have to endure it cause i dont want to go overseas to study cause i want to stay with my family
some people in these comments are so annoying lol. Anyways DSE/Gao Kao/Suneung/etc. are way way way way way harder than any western entrance exam especially in the states. we don't rlly have one lol. also those students are truly intelligent to survive that especially in China and still do well. It's really hard. In the states, we are more privileged and America is a self-driven society. When you become an adult, you would have to pave your own path and learn many things on your own in order to survive, while East Asian students have to do that early on which is incredibly unfair.
also some people lack awareness, the west is also hard to become rich in and so many things are self-driven without guardrails which can make many unmotivated but East Asia has too many guardrails so to speak for young students and then it just all collapses on them if they don't do well. It's so sad because so many people are not privileged in Asia.
The "UPSC" examination (Union Public Service Commission) in India "Gaokao" and "DSE" in China These examinations just rip the candidates apart from top to bottom during the preparation Whereas the "CUET" that stands for "Central University Entrance Test" and is held in "India" is now regarded as the "world's largest entrance exam" and this is offered to the candidates once a year... Anyways, all my best wishes to those working hard and smart by dripping every drop of sweat ✨❤️
Can you imagine what they have to go through mentally? If they failed the exam, they gonna have a big problem with their parents, and they ain't prepared for that.
I mean I am studying hard for my country’s examination, Im half Asian and trying to figure out my sexuality. Not everything has to be about work. Remember we are humans and not machines
Right, I also realized that. But I don't think it's about being poor, it's about the space she has or lack of it, and probably no education about how animals should be kept. She should get a hamster or a cat instead
@@IgirisuGuy Well as you may know, Hong Kong has the most expensive housing in the world. That little apartment building you saw in this video probably costs tens of millions of dollars. Helping these kids would cost billions.
Lol will be taking the exams next year! but rly though these grades do not define who you are as a person and your intellectual ability that’s because it is graded in a system of the marking schemes they have.
comeon japan, south korea and taiwan has lots of offline degree mills its easy to earn degree from these nations if you dont mind getting a job after graduation haha
