My great uncle was an army ranger killed in 1944 trying to capture the town of Cisterna just outside of Anzio. He’s buried in this cemetery and I had the honor of visiting many years ago. It’s such a beautiful place.
These people, who maintain and stand watch over our fallen, deserved this recognition that is long, long over due. As a Army solider who spent more than one tour of duty in Europe visiting the many places that our fallen are placed at with care, this is a very moving tribute. To Jane Pauley and the entire CBS Sunday morning crew, You did us, ALL of us, proud and right ! ! Thank you. US Army 1972-1982 Washington State.
I was fortunate enough to live in Naples Italy from 1957 - 1959 and I say that you to these young men that work so hard everyday honoring our fallen heros. P,lease know that a greatful country thank you for honoring our fallen with your passion and caring hearts. US Army Sgt. Steve Bennett
I was at the American Cemetery in Normandy this summer. It’s incredibly beautiful and equally haunting, it’s impossible to walk through without crying. The grounds are impeccably kept.
I have said this before….one of the BEST things the federal government has done and continues to do. They are maintained just like Arlington Cemetery is and just as beautiful.
Georgia native Eugene Bullard was the world’s first black military pilot. He fought for France in both WW1 and WW2 and among other citations was awarded the Croix de guerre in both wars.
I visited my dad's grave in the American Cemetery in France. I am so thankful he is there with his comrades and his grave is adopted by Bernard Duval who I call my French brother. The beauty is indescribable. I am thankful, also, that our fallen are honored.
You'd have to be made of stone to not be moved by this story, the sacrifice made by these men and the way that are honored even though many American's don't even know about these final resting places. A gift to have viewed this story.
The sad things is that we are not celebrating those who fought for us. We work that day, most US companies do not even close, people are forgetting the sacrifice made by these men.
May these amazingly courageous American soldiers always be remembered for their valor fighting in defense of democracy; and may they never again be disparaged as "losers" and "suckers" by the likes of X-POTUS Trump.
I'm so honored and in aww. I'm so proud to have stand on the shoulders of giants, it's the reason why I proudly served when I was 18yrs old. Words can't describe as the first in my family ro have served proudly, God bless these families who've lost their loved ones for our freedom.
Thank you CBS Sunday Morning for continuing to bring us these wonderful stories. Somehow after watching them I feel, even in these dark days, the human race may continue to survive after all.
My Uncle Frank A. DeDionisio was listed in MIA in Italy in 1945. Then I found info that he is either buried in this cemetery in Nettuno, Italy or has a marker here. I wonder how I can find out for sure.
Ya while the White House host a hip hop parties and gives out presidential medal to celebrities, men like this get forgotten. Our veterans are heroes and celebrities and most be honored.
