Some sad news to report: Rev. James Lawson Jr., a civil rights icon who schooled activists to withstand brutal attacks from white authorities during the height of the movement gained traction, has died at the age of 95.
Tonight, we'll pay tribute to the man called the "apostle of nonviolent protest."

R.I.P. to Reverend James. M. Lawson Jr. (1928➕️2024) 🙏🏾 My grandfather Rev. Dr. R.R. Wilkinson who was also a Civil Rights pioneer met Rev. James Lawson Jr. back in 1960 when he visited Roanoke, Virginia to meet with the Roanoke student movement and local NAACP members. Rev. Lawson taught them about nonviolent resistance strategies regarding lunch counter sit in protests. This sparked my grandfather Rev. Dr. R.R. Wilkinson to lead his bi racial committee to integrate white only Woolworths lunch counters on August 27th, 1960, making history in Roanoke as the first establishment to be integrated in that city.
