Forty years ago nearing the end of his night shift an alert signalman realised he had an imminent disaster to deal with, by his quick thinking and action he successfully prevented a major derailment right in Carlisle station. Today in honour of that a class 66 locomotive has been named after him. I had set out to see Braunton not knowing of the ceremony, so this made a good day out even better.
