October 30, 2016 in Kokubunji, Tokyo, Japan.
Master and jinashi shakuhachi pedagogue and maker, honkyoku expert Okuda Atsuya was kind enough to spend a little time with me while I was in Tokyo; sharing with me many rare flutes and compositions, letting me try out his 3.5 • 3.5 giant jinashi shak...
And letting me video a spontaneous video of this warm-up piece as a memento.
There are several variations on this basic honkyoku piece for shakuhachi (Honshirabe, Cho Shi, Honte no Shirabe, etc.), but because even the different versions are so similar to each other, I found myself requesting to play this with the various jinashi specialists that I met up with in Japan in October 2016.
Playing this piece together usually told us more information about each other in 4 minutes than having a 30 minute conversation. They say it is a piece for getting to know a new flute, and that is true, especially if someone else is playing a flute that is new to your flute, do you see? (In this 3 video Choshi/Honshirabe travel series, this is the only one that I am playing my own flute in)
This was a fortuitous short visit with Okuda, airigato (oh, new word by accident!)
