If you need to replace your 1978 through 1982 hood latch-to-latch cable, this is the video you must watch.
Installation is straightforward, but depending on the cable you get, you may need a spacer to avoid a BIG headache.
If you have the broken pieces of the original cable, you may be able to repair it by gluing the pieces back together with super glue and activator.
If you do not use the spray activator, the repair will not last. I provided a link below but you can usually find these products at most big-box or hardware stores.
Alternatively, you can repurpose the cable-provided it operates freely-using it as an emergency passenger-side hood latch release. That is also covered in the video.
I hope you find it helpful.
Thank you for watching! 🙂👍🏻

Interesting, I never worried about this before but I do see the reason why you are addressing this. I think your idea is a good one and it looks oem. Thanks for the idea.

It’s nothing more than a concept at this time, but I think it would work. Thank you for watching! 😊👍🏻

I have opened my hood when the cable broke with a screwdriver. I used a medium sized flat screwdriver and pushed down on that tab like you show in the video. This was probably around 10 years ago, but if I remember correctly it didn't take me that long to get the hood opened. I also had to open the hood several more times the same way because it can take a little while to send parts over the atlantic.

I don’t question the possibility of opening the hood as you describe. After all, the factory made provisions for it. Having said that, I’d love to see an actual demo of the process. I still believe that a better approach is to make “panic” release cables that can be accessed from inside the left fender or from under the car. Thank you for watching! 😊👍🏻

Great explanation. I had to do this with a 66 that had AC and the passenger side was difficult due to space limitations to pop the hood after the cable broke. Keep the videos coming.😊

Hey Brian, it’s pretty much impossible to make a good suggestion without actually seeing the car in person. Things that can cause the problem you describe include weatherstripping, unnecessary hood latch shims, bad bodywork, body misalignment, etc. Of course these cars were never 100% when new, so who knows. My suggestion is to have a good body guy look at it and give you suggestions. Sometimes bodywork is the only effective way to solve fitment issues. Good luck, and apologies for not being able to offer a solution. 😊👍🏻

Hello Louis I cannot get my passenger side to open. Do you know of a tool they sell to stick through the grommet hole to push down on the tab? I installed the old emergency cable but it is not working as well. Thank you Brian

Wow. Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, I do not know if any tools made for that purpose. And the windshield wiper arm will probably get in the way, anyway. Did you try to pop it open while someone pushes the hood down around that area? Sometimes that can help release the latch.

Thank you for the reply sir. I had my wife push on the corner and bam I guess it was not completely latched that's why the emergency cable was doing nothing. Ahh happy man
