Hoof abscesses, what you need to know

If I was the one fixing this abscess, it would be healed by now. Plus the concavity would be back as well. Because I want this young lady how to fix these things correctly. See, she first needs to learn how to handle hooves correctly & be comfortable with that.
Now that she is, she can move on & learn more.
Luckily she came right here to my place. Many don't get this learning experience & would be dealing with another abscess in the near future or still have a long toe afterwards. With a hoof that continues to grow forward instead of down!
Get to know what the difference is.

Everything you said makes so much sense. I also follow a lady on Facebook who dissects hooves, she finds rocks in cracks that you are talking about migrate up the hoof and do make the white line travel around it. I'm happy that I stumbled across your video trying to find out more information about abscesses. You have a new subscriber!

I wish you were in the south! There's so many horses I see w/ irresponsible owners that don't care for the hooves like they should. I actually just won an Overo paint mare through a raffle & I'm so glad I got her when I did. Her hooves were soo overgrown, had many cracks & was always in a field that stayed wet. She's also pregnant b/c she came from a breeder so her hooves would've gotten worse & worse.

Rob, I had a stroke back in Jan. I haven't done much with the horses out here since I moved to Idaho back in 2017. "They're a different breed of owners out here"!

Bill Campanelli : Bill, So sorry to learn of your health issue from January. I hope you are now feeling much better and have recovered. You are in our prayers. I hope the folks in Idaho discover just how talented a horseman you are.

Hi Bill. I am in UK and looking for all the help I can get. I came across your videos and can only thank you for imparting your experience. I have a 24 year old welsh cob with sinking pedal bone caused by compensating limb injury off loading and we are near the end of all we can try. We have recently resected the hoof to drain a horrible abscess which was draining from the coronary band because it couldn't get out down below because of support pads and we now have targeted anti biotics to treat the infection. The horse is coping but it is difficult to know how far we can go. Any help for people like me is invaluable and I have been more than prepared to pay for all the help necessary but feel I have been let down - or am I being unrealistic. Received latest x rays today and it is absolutely not at all good. But I am posting to say that the kind of information you are taking the time to impart is so very very important for those who care for their horse. Thank you. I only wish I had been so much more aware when this all started around 3 months ago. Thanks

Hi Rob, I wish I had other horses to work with other than the 2 I have, I haven't found them out here. Lots of young trainers out here with a different mindset on training. I'm feeling well though thank you!

I am having a problem with my vet not treating my horses hoof issues correctly. The drainage is coming from front area where hair meets hoof on both front feet. Any advice? Vet want to keep giving Banamine and in my opion masking root of problem. The filley is 5 and otherwise healthy. Can't understand why this happened and how to properly help her get better and I don't at this point trust my vet. Have here in stall everything dry but you can tell she is in pain not walking and locking up both front legs?

@HoofTech 5 лет назад
You may have a crack or hole in the white line or what they call seedy toe. Dirt & fungus get forced up in along the hoof wall & it busts out at the hair line. Stall rest is never good for a horse!........Find a good farrier.

Lets get a couple of thing correct. The vets priority will be the Absis and nothing else will be done until that is sorted (If possible). The Vet will cut a bigger hole so the Puss drains faster with the owner giving daily Warm Epsom Salts Baths then covering. With a human a Doctor (Or any body really) can cut a hole then squeeze out all the Puss hopefully ending with the sack? A smaller hole and a Doctor may squeeze out the Puss then flush it with a syringe full of Epsom Salts until clear fluid comes out but you can't do that with a horses hoof? So he cuts bigger so it drains faster? I doubt if he would deal with the long toe but would have informed the owner to call in a farrier to deal with that after the Absis had been sorted.

I'm not saying that this is not interesting, don't get me wrong. But on this occasion, I don't quite get the point. Are we talking about a bruise leading to a future abscess, was the horse lame at this time, was there any pus in there ? Is the idea that long toes lead to abscesses ? What is it really that we do need to know about hoof abscesses ? Thanks for posting.

Bill, what are your thoughts on just allowing the abscess burst on its own with daily soaking in Epsom salt?
@HoofTech
@HoofTech 8 лет назад
Some times you have to. You'll see a lot of people use hoof testers (which I'll never use) they apply a lot of pressure. "I monitor the hoof daily" which is what horse owners need to learn how to do (become a good nurse). Sometimes the infection starts to go up the leg though (swelling) this is always concerning. No doubt, twice a day soaking in warm water & Epson salt is where you always start! But once the abscess is located, it needs to be opened (unless it opens on it's own).

So, after three days, she is still limping on her right hind although on one side of her frog, the sole is thicker but not flaky. I shaved some of that down for more concavity and found a black part and a small hole. I am guessing that is going to be the exit for abscess, not sure if it broke yet or not as I am too afraid to dig deep. after soaking in Epsom salt water, I put some of that sticky green Epsom salt poultice up in her soul and the entire hoof. She seems to be putting a bit more pressure on that leg but still lame. Time will tell..... Keep up the great work with the videos

As PortableSkateSharpening # days of soaking & wrapping is nothing. Many times this can go on for a week or more of soaking & wrapping. Sounds like you're on the right track (But when in doubt, get someone in there with more knowledge).

I have a mare that has had an abscess for two weeks, called the vet out and he made a baby hole, but doesn't look to be draining at all since he left. It's in the tip of the frog. I've been soaking it in salt and then putting drawing salve on it then wrapping it. The vet just wants me to keep her on bute and let it take its course, he also says if it won't come out the bottom it will come out the top of the hoof, which scares me lol Advice?
@HoofTech
@HoofTech 5 лет назад
I'm not a big fan of bute. I use L-Lysine instead. But get it from a good source (my best horse . com) And I like to keep them moving (no stall rest). Sometimes it takes awhile for those suckers to erupt & it's better if it comes out the hair line. Then you have no hole in the sole to worry about.

I agree, why tie the poor dog up.... let it run around. And I think the abscess has to be able to drain, hence digging it out. Otherwise it can get into the bone. Horses have had to be put down because of that.

That frog is just ..awful....how did it get like that? I think maybe the frog is the pressing issue.

Sir you seem to have your own ideas but your ideas are not all correct . The horse has what is known as a retracted sole and although retracted soles are more suseptable to sub solar abcesses , the retraction is not a sign one is about to happen . Sure you don't want a long toe but even with a barefoot horse with a short toe will still get debris in the white line . That's what happens with any horse that doesn't have a shoe covering the white line which is softer by nature . Debris in the white line often is not an issue unless it tracks up and foreign body enters live tissue . Even with a shoe this can still happen on occasion . Sole growth isn't achieved by (Aggrevating ) it . Growth of the sole is determined by horse health or genetics or supplementation. Some horses are simply predisposed to poor hoof quality by genetics . 99 percent of the time an abcess can be relieved in the white area at the toe . This is because the white line is stressed more at the toe through breakover and Defiantly worse when the white line is stretched with a long toe . The reason why a decent cavity ( within reason )is created by farrier or vet is so the abcesses can drain over a few days if need be without the sole healing over too soon . Believe me , a drain too small can heal over before all infection has drained .
