MY PROFILE:
I started fishing when I was just a young kid and instantly fell in love with Bass Fishing. Started fishing tournaments when I was in high school and have been fishing them ever since. For years I fished every tournament I could enter sometimes fishing as many as 45 tournaments a year. I qualified for the Elites when I was 30 but didn't have the sponsors or money to compete so I turned it down. Got sponsor support later and fished the FLW Tour for 2 years and having been fishing the Toyotas since 2006. I’ve won 5 Angler of the Year Titles becoming the only fishermen to have more than 3 AOYs in the Toyota series. Won numerous events along the way that has helped shape my way into working for Strike King as head of product innovation. Along the way, I picked up a camera and started filming my endeavors. I have now fallen in love with making videos about fishing and delivering it to you. Follow along the journey...it should be an honest and fun ride!

Off topic but a young man at the pond asked me about the Hybrid Hunter yesterday you would have gotten a kick out of it…I said what you know about that he said RU-vid. I said okay who created it for Strike King he answered correctly. Well he said Todd and KVD I was somewhat impressed. He said can I see one I grabbed the box picked one out for him. I walked away with a smile he walked away with his first hybrid hunter. Would have thought he was handed a million dollars by his reaction couldn’t believe I’d give him a bait. My point gentleman, if you see a kid on the bank answer their questions if possible. Might just make your day a little better as well!

Setting the hook like you do is so much easier then just jacking them. I love flipping but with neck and shoulder issues really jacking them doesn't work for me. I learned how to set the hook like you out od necessity and I lose less fish and it doesn't hurt me as bad. except on really food days my ribs hurt from tucking the butt but that's a good pain to have.

Todd, looking from a broader angling perspective we've got a bit of a challenge. It is that north American large mouth anglers refer to jigs as one thing. Offshore saltwater call something totally different 'a jig'. And regionally there are variations such as ball heads, hair jigs, tungsten jigs. You name it. It's just hard or impossible to figure out what the original thing was. But if I was to guess, I'd say the larger off-shore saltwater variants is where it started (simply a means to get a lure vertically down quickly to reach deeper swimming saltwater species). In fact, the saltwater variant of the jig, is what freshwater bass anglers would term a blade bait. Or something similar to a blade bait scaled up, and with less sophistication.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 Месяц назад
On top of it, the saltwater off shoreguys had various riggings for trolling waters. Going back to Buck Perry, you can see that what happen in freshwater, was those techniques of jigs, trolling rigs, spoon plugs etc. That all got adapted to freshwater. And then, when mapping and depth finders became common place, the need to understand shorelines by trolling and using spoon plugs decreased or disappeared.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 Месяц назад
The saltwater jig now has detachable hooks like a hard plastic bait, except the body is made of heavy metal. Sure in saltwater light penetration through large depths is possible, because of water clarity. Saltwater jigs are 'visual' like a jerkbait, and yet heavy like a blade bait too. Freshwater jigs based it all around a large single hook, that is non-replaceable. The freshwater jig lure is just dressed in some way (the advantage of a freshwater jig seems to be that, it's custom-isable using color and materials). Whereas saltwater jigs aren't.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 Месяц назад
Yet the point I'm making is the saltwater jig to me, is absolutely a lot closer to what I would consider to be a jig. The structure jigs that bass anglers use are more of a 'target casting lure'. Where anglers develop skill in using them to cast accurately and often. Hence why they're so simple. A basic hook with weight, and dressed to whatever one prefers. However, in the freshwater structure jig there isn't a lot of actual jigging that goes on. It's a bait to place accurately on the target. I just wonder about that, how did freshwater co-opt that name, that's really used to describe a different lure type?
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 Месяц назад
Lastly I'd suggest that modern freshwater bass anglers peer at the old multipliers reels and rods, where it began in freshwater gear angling. And laugh at how un-sophisticated it may have been then. However, look at the saltwater offshore boat anglers today who still fish what is really a jig lure. You'll still see an older style of multiplier fishing reel (which incorporates line levelling wind nowadays). All that freshwater bass anglers did for reservoirs was start with the smallest versions of that then available, and tried to put the jig saw pieces for freshwater angling together. From an original playbook that was created on saltwater.
@academicmailbox7798
@academicmailbox7798 Месяц назад
I went shopping in two locations for a basic bass freshwater style baitcaster reel and rod to match (and a supply of some kind of ball head or lead head hooks of decent quality). And one store had a nice popular brand of baitcaster, like you'd see on Bassmaster. But only one of that item in stock. And to be fair, I couldn't find any of the nice lighter weight rods I'd use to aim and cast a structure jig with (you get caught somewhere in between offshore saltwater rods, and freshwater pike, zander, musky type of tackle). All good tackle and applicable to what people do in western Europe. Fish surf on beaches or rocks, and lake resident pike in freshwater. What it shows is how little penetration that a lot of what largemouth anglers use has, as a type of tackle. In lots of parts of the world still.

I thought with a flipping setup you want a more shallow spool on reel? I hate a lot of line in reel when flipping. I feel a shallow spool allows for keeping trajectory low on a pitch and low splash. Who knows,.may be different style
