Great hook tying video jon, I've never had much luck tying spade hooks myself so perhaps you should do another video on tying eyed hooks one day showing what knots you use although I think you might of covered it in another video.. love your new guest announcers by the way

Great tips. The nail board is better than any in box helping rig. Sometimes I've let a bit too much line on the loop until I have put some plastic tubing of tape to make the nails thicker so the line length includes the loop knot to get it to the correct final length. Or just put the nail a bit further.

I cut out a bit of a long waffle where I said I used to tie 28 IM1s to 0.05! Even had a stack of old hooks to show, but didn’t feel it added anything to the film, so I cut that bit out. Older hooks were also much smaller I think. An old 20 is tiny compared to a modern size 20. Shame there’s never been a universal standard…

Ever thought of using a fly-tying vice to hold the hook while you're tying it? Would save on all the fingers and thumbs getting in the way - and it would still be "by hand", so to speak.

Awesome. I started tying my own hook lengths last year. I mainly fish the stick so I've tied all mine at 12". And feeder hook lengths are all 1m. I use the match man hook tyer but think I will I give your way a go. I've been using kamasan b520 hooks from 14 to 20. Thanks Jon for showing people how to tie hooks and hooklenths. I've tied my hooks like that for years, and I used to have a Preston hooklenth box that I kept them all in. That was until I lent my box to my nephew, and the bustard never gave it back. Soon after I emigrated to Thailand, anyway I still tie my hooks this way, The Thai anglers can't believe the size of the hooks that I use, they say a size 16 is tiny.
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 4 месяца назад
Slightly bigger hooks required in Thailand I guess! 😂
@davidhodgson977
@davidhodgson977 4 месяца назад
@JonArthur you guess correct overall, but the fish in my pool have been hooked a few times now, so they are bigger and wiser than when I put them in. They are a black coloured fish much like a bass, they are about three pounds each, and great sport with a pole and light tackle. I use banded pellets or paste as bait. My fish are lovely to eat, so I have to rush them back in the water before my wife sees.

I'd be lost without my Matchman tyer's, there's no way I could tie a spade-end hook without them, with my hot-dog fingers. I can't tie with 0.10 or less any more thanks to a loss of feeling, so I'm having to use pre-tied (SFL's) for the finer stuff now. It sure took a while to get back into the swing of it after my 20-year long break from fishing. I've found the pegs in these hook boxes pretty easy to use for getting the lengths right, but can't say I haven't been eyeing up a Stonfo Calibrone or one of the home-made tying stations I've seen.

@JonArthur
@JonArthur 4 месяца назад
I’ll use a hook until it’s lost its sharpness or the hooklength kinks. With extreme fishing and big fish if my rigs had some abuse I might change it after a few fish for extra peace of mind. I often leave an old hooklength on a rig to plumb up with, then pop a fresh one on to fish with.

What is the purpose of the PTFE coating on the hooks ?
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 3 месяца назад
The coating makes the hooks more resistant to rust, snagging and wear and tear, prolonging their lifespan. I also find the newer PTFE coated hooks keep their points better and don't blunt so quickly.

Jon, you are a nutcase 😂 why have you got the sharp point of your nails facing upwards ? Just nail them into the wood normally. Use oval wire or brad nails if your worried your loop won't fit over the round head of the nail 😂 I think it's time to get yourself to screwfix and update Jonny's jig , for you and your cats safety 😂
@JonArthur
@JonArthur 4 месяца назад
I've tried it with nails heads facing up etc but when you tying 100s of hooks I 100% prefer no lip to catch on anything for a quicker on and off. That way I can tie a hook whatever way the jig is facing, but the single prong with a slither of tape on is just an extra bit of insurance and protection, especially for my fine winter hooklengths. I'm still a nutcase! 😂

Hi john on small silvers hoohs such as b511 16 to 20 I tighten to hold and then move the knot to the spade, then tighten. It ensures you get the line in front and tighten to the spade not the shank.
