Hooking a Cell Phone to an Audio Mixer for Doing Phone Interviews

Sorry for the shaky video, I'll have to find a way to stabilize that webcam when hand holding it. But I wanted to show how I created an inexpensive solution for hooking a cell phone up to a mixer so that callers could hear me without hearing themselves, and having their audio included in the stereo output of my mixer. Hope this helps for those that are looking for this type of solution.

You did the best job of breaking this problem down both in cost and instruction. I was all over the web the last few days working on a reasonable solution. Lucky for me I ran into this on a whim. Thank you good sir! Thanks for taking the time.

I found that the feed to the phone is taken from the "effects send" then turn up all effects send controls EXCEPT the input from the phone, this way your phone caller will hear all your mixer channels without their feed. If you just plug the line level output of the mixer into a mic level input on the phone it will over load the input and your caller will hear over modulated sound, probably distorted, you need to drop the level of that signal with an in line attenuator, probably about 40dB or more (you may have to cut a lead and patch in several resistors). I adjusted this on Skype, using the 'microphone test" feature, record your test, listen to it back until you get the level correct. So, not only phone calls but Skype and other voip calls, even video calls allowing your caller to see the studio and better react.

Great video. I am a newbie at trying to set up a light talk and bumper roundtable in my area, and didnt know where to start. Seeing how the mixer and all integrates as well as the split jack is really going to help. I think the local music store has a similar VERY used mixer for sale cheap, so I can look at that, too. Marcellus. You did a real good job on this. However, I may have missed one point. I saw the splitter cable and the 1/4" jack for the mono out. And, saw you plug them in....kind of! I'd really like to see a wider shot of connecting the two ends of the splitter to their specific locations on the board and which wires you used for them, please. Thanks. It was a big help!

Great video, saw the other video recommending the Bluetooth interface first. The first thing I thought was it seems like overkill for a phone which has its own physical input and $239 is insane. The other thing is why introduce another point of failure for a live recording...that's an A/V no-no. The phone could disconnect which there isn't much you can do about that but if the Bluetooth drops your interview is delayed trying to get it to reconnect, etc; The aux sends was a nice touch as well. Well done.

Nice video. I’ve got a related question. I have an iPad and iPhone (no computer). I’m planning on purchasing a usb mic (rode usb-nt mini) that has a headphone out. What I want to do are recorded remote interview podcasts. So If I connect my mic to my ipad via usb-c, and headphones to my mic, I assume I can have a skype call with another person and use my mic to talk to them. The question is this - I want to record this conversation on skype but skype (or any related app on iPad) does not support recording on iOS. I am thinking of trying to split the audio from the headphone out port on the Mic, connecting one of the splits to my headphones. As for the other split, I am thinking if I connect it to a trs (pin with 2 black lines) on one end, and then the other trrs end (3 black lines) to my phone headphone port. I then plan to load up garage band or voice recorder on my phone and hoping the trs to trrs cable will send audio into my iphone and allow me to record the ipad skype conversation. Do you think this will work or do you have another solution I could try with my setup? I want to keep it simple and not use mixers and such since i need a travel friendly solution and I travel with just one backpack.

Hey Marcellus, thank you so much for this informative video. For the Mono Out from the board to the Mic in on the cell phone, did you use a MONO 1/4 to MONO 3.5 adapter or a STEREO 1/4 to a STEREO 3.5 adapter? Thanks!

Hey Marcellus, Thanks for the tips. Finally, an affordable alternative. I was wondering how this setup would also work with FX Send if a mixer doesn't have a mono channel, and what specific cables (aside from the 4-pin to 2x 3-pin) that you use to accomplish this setup

I just to a mixer today. First time playing with a mixer. Mine doesn't have the MON output. I just figured out how to make this work without a MON output. Just pan the channels. So you have main mix R connected to the mic input on the phone. Channel 1 (where the studio mic is) is panned hard RIGHT. The audio from coming from the phone goes to a line input channel. Which is 4/5 on my mixer. So 4/5 would be panned hard LEFT. Having the audio sources panned like that should work. Once I get the splitter cable you showed I should be able to test it out. This is just what I need. I want to make youtube videos of a conversation with a friend. My original thought was skype. Going through the mixer would be simpler since there is nothing special he has to do on his end. Thanks for this video. Your solution doesn't work for my mixer. But it gave me an idea of how to make it work. Thanks for cluing me in to the adapter. Time to go order the adapters and cables I need. :)

The information is pretty good but a easy way to remember all this is to take the headphone female connection end of the adapter cable and use a male trs 1/8" on one end cable and a (trs stereo, tr mono) 1/4 male trs on the other end into a channel to want to make part of your recording main out. If you "don't" have a line input port on your board along with the standard XLR inputs for each channel then you will need to use a channel that has RCA female inputs. You will then need to use a cable that has male 1/8" male trs on one end and connect to the adapter cable and red and white RCA male on the other end so you can connect to your board. Then take the mic female connection from the adapter cable and use a 1/8" tr male cable on one end 1/4 inch tr male on the other end and connect into a "AUX out" port on your board. You can then adjust the dial AUX knob on your mic channel to get the proper level so the person making the call to you can receive a comfortable volume level. You can also add other other mic channels or even music and use their AUX send dials on those channels so the caller can hear everything what you want them to hear. To avoid feedback NEVER use the AUX send dial on the channel input you used so you can hear the caller. Just like another person said, the sound quality of the recording you make all depends on the quality of the phone the caller is using. You can buy modest priced quality phone mics for i phones / android and the recording quality goes WAY up.

Phenomenally great video guy! I plugged the iRig2 TRRS end into my desk phone which uses a Google Voice account and noticed none of my sound effects like pitch change, echo and delay get passed from my mixer to the ATT Wireless caller. When I plug the TRRS into my cell phone the sound effects get passed through to the same person's cell phone I called. Do you know if Google Voice and other services "normalize" audio back to something unaltered with affects? Thanks man! I'm using an iRig2 between my phones I mentioned and the Yamaha MG10XU mixer fyi.

I would like to do a live recording of me playing my keyboard, using a drum machine and singing as well through my behringer Xenyx 1222 mixer. I intend to use my Samsung S7 for the video, so am I right to connect my monitor out straight to the S7 using this StarTech MUYHSMFF splitter? Or am I better off getting an Irig 2 or something like that? I'm guessing the quality of the audio recording on an Irig would be better?
@Kingphotosonline
@Kingphotosonline 7 лет назад
To be honest, I would record the audio separately as well for the purpose of quality since the channel coming into the phone is just a mono channel, and then join the audio in post. Although you could still run a mono to the phone for the purpose of making the sync go easier.

Hi Marcellus I followed your instructions and I can get the phone into my mixer with a good level; however, the phone caller can't hear the output from my mixer. If I increase the out put audio from any source from my mixer they may hear a little noise. Then the audio would become over modulated in the main mix out. I was wondering if I need a post/prefader switch for each channel? My mixer has aux send and fx send. I have the Behringer Euroroack UB12222 FX-Pro. P.S. My Skype mix minus works fine, however that is a different cable set up. Your instructions were very good. There must be something on my end. Thanks

Question: You mentioned that those on the other end can hear sound back at them(I've been told it's an echo or people hear themselves). Does the splitter cause that? I see that you referred to the headphone jack as where you had them plugged. Little confusing as you mentioned the mono out when referencing the headphones. Can you clarify? Help!

I'm sending a mono channel back to the phone, and on the other channels, I can choose how much, if at all, to send to mono. That way I can control what the caller hears, even themselves. But I monitor all audio using the monitor port for the headphones.

Thanks, Marcellus! I have that exact same cable. I had tried to get it working with the same or a similar mixing board. I don't remember what my issue was. I had it MOSTLY working, but there was an issue that made it not usable. I'm going to go back and follow your directions and see if I can get it right this time. We have had to use a landline with an old and large device. A nice benefit is that the director can answer the call and put them on hold, and then press a button to make the call live when the host is ready for them. How would you recommend doing that here? Just unplug the cable for the director to take the call; then plug it in when ready to send it to the host and put it live; and just make sure that that input is turned down until after you plug it in so that you don't get a loud popping noise?

What type of microphone are you using, and how is the audio board setup to produce the rich sound of your voice.
@Kingphotosonline
@Kingphotosonline 9 лет назад
hassan shakir I use a Rode Procaster Dynamic Microphone. My Behringer mixer has a usb interface, which is what I used to transport the audio. A technique for getting close the mic is talking 'across' the mic in close proximity, which will yield you a deeper voice without the 'pops' that you get from the plosives from being too close to the mic. I typically don't mess with the equalizer though.

Hello, thanks for sharing this hookup. I have a question. I do live dj on facebook on my android phone. Mostly when i go live i point my speakers to my phone so people could hear the music at their end. I'm looking for a way to connect the mixer i have, 10 track yamaha mixer, headphone out to the cellphone so people could hear the music clear and not sounding far away like in a hallway. So I wan't sure if that connection you have can do the trick. What do you recommend or what you think should I go about in connecting to the phone.
