Hoover U5002 Convertible Upright Vacuum Cleaner First Look 

It kinda looks like a dial-a-matic mixed with an older Panasonic Jet-Flo

A friend of mine has one of these but it's self-propelled. The machine looks identical otherwise.

Love these old machines. I believe the burgundy model you referenced was based on the Dial-A-Matic U5007 in cinnamon/oyster white, which was one of the very last US models before Hoover dropped the line. The U5007 is extremely rare; my grandmother had one when I was a baby, based on family pictures, but I have never been able to find another one.

If I'm not mistaken, the Dial-A-Matic was the first hard body vacuum cleaner made.

Fantastic! One of my fond memories is from about 1977 when my best friend’s mom got a self-propelled Dial-a-Matic in cream and orange. He invited me over to test drive it on their brown shag in the basement. I was thrilled and marveled at its power drive…as my mom was instead a fan of the current Eureka up-rights which may have had two speeds and automatic cord rewind…but no amazing power drive. Yeah…Dick sure treated his wife Linda well.
