@@taylorc2542 April has a higher net worth than Tyler. At least, that's what Google says. I have no problem believing that being a drop-dead gorgeous actress and model pays a bit better than being a divorced and dumb (his words) RU-vid car guy.
Had a 1967 912 Targa with zip out rear window. Bought for $8000; sold for $23000. Thought I was a genius. Found it recently. Sold for $135,000. Silly season pricing.
My dad had a 912 right before I was born and he absolutely loved it I wish he would have kept it but he decided to trade it because he was having a family I don't remember what he got he had a bunch of different cars from the 60s to the 70s some 80s I wish you would have kept some for sure he had some bad ass cars
I had a ‘69 911E that was a sportamatic…. Bought it for $4,500 in 2000 when no one loved old 911’s. Sold it for $4,500 a few years later. The value of that car in its color has it over $175,000 now… just crazy. It was sold and shipped about ten years ago to a collector in Norway.
And while I like old Porsches, a 912 is simply not worth even 40k. Honestly most of the air cooled Porsches aren’t amazing drivers cars. Light and quick cars but with odd driving dynamics.
Been there. In 2000 I bought a 56 Porsche 356a speedster from an older woman who's husband had recently died for $25,000. I sold it that same year to a porsche dealership in Rhode Island for $50,000. I thought I was also a genius. Those cars are selling for an average price of $326,826. Clearly I'm not as smart as I thought I was lol
@@donschiffer7400 Harry Pellow built the engine. New Koni and old Recaro's installed. 5 dash gauge. Would wag it's tail on command. Sublime handling. No drama. Damn good cars. My wee wee is long enough.
They also just couldn’t sell them when they were new, for a Toyota it was expensive in todays currency it would be a little under 50 grand for a fully optioned targa top new. People wouldn’t be lining up to be paying that much for a Toyota that wasn’t called Land Cruiser. Especially not when you could’ve bought a 2nd hand 964 Porsche 911 in those times with a couple thousand miles on it for cheaper than a Supra and still have more power stock
Hoovie is spot on with this list. I love, love, love air-cooled 911s but I'm not going to pay the money for one right now. I bought a '99 996 manual coupe for $14k seven years ago and love it. I can replace the engine four times and it will still be cheaper than one 1987 Carrera. I think it all comes down to the gatekeeping that happens in Porsche circles. Certain dudes want to hang with the "cool" crowd and they feel like an air-cooled 911 is the only way in. The truth is that nobody cares about your car more than you do. So just buy what you love and drive it.
@@Logiconfire This is the third wunch that took him for a ride....his family will have to sell a lot of Freddy's hamburger franchises to make up for it.
My buddy bought one in 87 I had a gt mustang 14.96 his Buick ran 1443 maple grove on the street I beat him by two cars all the time at the track you could smash the throttle and it would not spin that was the key to great time I could put a trans in that Buick in less than 4 hrs he wrecked that trans well over 10 times in less than 5 years he had NOS and a chip to keep the engine from cutting out he paid 19 grand new at Kelly Buick in Emmaus pa@@truthserum5310
In 2010 I purchased a 87 Pontiac fiero gt for 6.500$ with 24.500 miles on it. I do still own the car. When I take it to a car show I tell people proudly that I am the cheapest car in the parking lot. I do love the car and will never sell it.
Tyler, Tyler....Throwing your girls " dream car" on your list was obviously Sexual suicide (painful to watch ) !! Bro look at your girl.....think first before you GAFF. !! If you're very, very lucky you will get to listen to her shred you every day for the next 30 years. She's a keeper.
She can also see this as an opportunity to spread the word that the cars are overpriced, and then hopefully, she will be able to buy the Grand National or even a GNX at a reasonable price 😅
Sorry April, Grand Nationals are definitely overpriced. Bought a year old one for 19K, about what it cost new. Owned it for a few years, and it handled poorly, had poor build quality, and poor ride. Terrible to own in Chicago. Replaced it with a GMC Typhoon and it was more fun, unique, comfortable, and handled better.
April--It's obvious that you are in a lot of pain from your recent serious accident and surgery. Hoping you are feeling better soon. I'm guessing Tyler is taking very good care of you the same way that you cared for him when he was sick. There is nothing more beautiful than two people in love.
100% Agree about the Big Mopars, I am a former owner of one of those beasts and I actually enjoy the driving experience of my 40th Anniversary GTI that has a fraction of the power much more. At least I made a decent profit because I bought the Mopar at the right time and sold it at an even better time lol.
18:40 In 1987 this was the greatest factory sleeper car of all time. In 2024 it is the greatest factory sleeper car of all time. Factory, this has an Indianapolis 500 winning engine in it. If they go up to $250,000 I'll still dream of owning one someday.
I completely agree with you on most of these but especially on the air cooled 911s. They are some of my favorite cars of all time and I've had several including a SC, 964, 993, 930 4 speed, and a 993 Turbo in the early to mid 2000s but now they've gotten stupid expensive. I 😊 have a clean low mileage 996 C4 Cab. I won't say I enjoy the 996 as much as an air cooled one but for the price it's still a great driving experience. As far as what the general person thinks any Porsche is cool. Years ago I was in So Cal in my SC Targa, which I had just picked up from the shop for having a full restoration so it looked great. I saw a 993 Turbo S parked at a bar near the PCH so of course I stopped and was drooling over it. A guy was walking in and stopped to talk to me and said he'd introduce me to the owner but couldn't understand why I was so excited. He said what's the difference between his and my car, they look the same! I get all sorts of compliments on my 996 and even when I have my friend's dad's 986 Boxster people say how nice a car it is and it's a fun car to drive. Kinda slow but fun. That was a crazy long way to say there's no good reason for regular air cooled 911s to be anywhere as much as they are. Even most of the special ones are way too much. The Grand Nationals are way too much too!!!
Bought an 85 3.2 for $15k and sold it for $18k ten years ago. Loved the car but couldn’t imagine paying more than $25k for a nice one. That car would be around $60k today. Glad I had it when I did. People bring them to track days now and they are roadblocks. They need their own class….
@steveo85 completely agree. I truly love them but they are very compromised cars that aren't fast unless you spend a fortune to build a motor. Also to get track performance out of them you have to know how to drive them not just a good track driver in general. They aren't comfortable at all and things like heat and AC are a joke. Like I said still one of my favorite cars but the prices of the last several years are ridiculous.
Not to mention the worst thing about those Mopars... You can live in a gated community with a locked garage, be 50 years old, have a perfect driving record and an 800 credit score, and your insurance is still going to be $250/month because of all the stupid attached to them.
This is now my favorite episode of GMYT by a long shot. My hat goes off to Tyler for being brave and dumb enough simultaneously to air this about the GN. It looks like Mr. Hoover might be sleeping with Neelix tonight.
I kinda get it with the XJ Cherokee. There old enough to be unique but new enough to use, there simple super reliable, a totally practical size and IMO so damn handsome.
The 80's and 90's cars that are going through the roof right now. That's just us 80's babies that now have a little money and are buying for nostalgia reasons and nothing else.
I actually agree with Hoovie on a few of these. The DeLorean is an epicly cool vehicle to LOOK AT, but its completely empty on "experience". Supras are getting STUPID expensive. Not even during the onslaught of F&F 1 did the price of Supras explode so much. It's crazy. The thing about Grand Nationals is that they were out accelerating *brand new* muscle cars all the way into the late 2000s. Now GNXs the sky is the limit. Less then 600 produced and even faster.
What is the average lifespan on YT, 6 years? This new channel is a great idea. Even solid content gets tiresome in a repetitive format. And as Tyler said - the new empires are built on personality, which y’all have. I can imagine you’ve got a long way to go if you just keep being yourselves and freshen up the approach now and then. Success is contagious!
I understand what you are aiming at. Its a beautiful thing when the price and the value of a vehicle meet in the middle. Silly money throws this equation right out the window.
A DeLorean is only not reliable if it wasn't taken care of or if you had a bad mechanic working on it. I owned my DeLorean for almost 6 years and once all the crap was taken care of it drives without any issues for the last few years . The windows are bigger then on your contact in case you forgot. They built abut 9000 of the cars and once the catalytic system is removed it drives great. Remember no cars were fast in the early 80s. This was not because o a bad engine but because of crazy us rules by the government. The same engine was used in the Renault Alpine (without any US regulations for European market) and it had way more horsepower. The DeLorean is a legend unlike so many other cars
Sorry, Tyler. The 4 Runner is not more capable than the XJ Cherokee. I am not a Toyota or Jeep guy, but the proof is in the pudding. Out here in the desert southwest, the XJ has shown much more capability and is less expensive to maintain and upgrade. It is RU-vid channels like Matt's Off-Road Recovery that have spiked the interest in this very capable vehicle. I had a chance to purchase a 59,000 mile, one-owner, original condition Cherokee Sport for $6900 in Dec. 2022. Someone beat me to the punch (I am 6 hrs away). The car was up for sale 3 weeks later on the same site for $14,000 and sold in a day. OUCH!!! You nailed it, WAY too much money on these often beat down SUVs.
Dealers couldn’t give away E30 M3’s. Two years old still sitting on showroom floors with heavy discounts. 911’s have also gotten out of hand for sure. Owned a 78 SC Targa for years and sold it in the early 2000’s. Fun car no doubt but I wouldn’t drop the money people want for them now
Hoovie, you're right. So many cars are overpriced, it's insane. The Buick Grand Nationals are super cool, but a bit pricey at the moment. Stay true to yourself, sounds cheesy, but she will respect you more in the long run. Cheers.
I got a mint 50k mile 1984 3.2 Carrera back around 2007 for $18k. I drove it for a couple of years and sold it for $19,500. I don’t feel bad, I had a lot of fun and drove it for free. I now have a ‘99 Boxster that I got for $14k… and I “overpaid” by a couple of grand since it came from the original owner with full records, IMS, new clutch and a new top. Yeah, I am a proud bottom feeder, but my point is that even a base 986 Boxster has the same HP as a 3.2 Carrera and is far more comfortable and capable… even the A/C works well which nobody ever said about an air-cooled 911. I would love another 3.2 or SC but for $60k+ it isn’t where I would put my money.

The buick was an everyday junk car that was made by the millions across the g.m. line with a drivetrain that was new a special! The drive train was the only thing special!
Good job! Stick to what you know and why folks subscribed to Hoovies Garage! If not, folks will tune out early or stick around to see your better half ;)
I will start out by saying that jacket April is wearing would look fantastic in a Gran National or GNX but even better in a GSX. And .... It is a interesting list. I've had the privilege to own a couple of the vehicles on the list and drive all but one on the list.
They're both right. GNs are the coolest car ever made...... But, they are a bit over priced. And some advice for Hoovie, the only way out of the dog house now is to give April your GN.
The problem is that anything that is a daily driver or survivor is already wrecked and torn apart for spare parts or restored. It's why you never find reasonable priced old Mustangs from the 60s. Anything that is affordable is long dead and gone and all that are left are the few survivors.
A Delorean replica on a good chassis would be a great ride. What would fit the bill? Model 3? 911? On the Model 3 with a fun interior, it could be a great daily.
Know what I love about April? She's a wicked smart car girl!! NICE!! No, I didn't get as excited as she did with Hoovie talking overpriced collector cars. But I enjoyed it almost as much. haha.
GNs are cool and all, but even in 80s they were kind of overpriced. Back in the 80s you could take any of the G-body cars, add a small block chevy along with one of many of the suspension kits offered back then and have a killer car for less what dealers were selling the GNs for.
Drove the 355 years ago. My Lotus Exige was a more exotic, more fun, and faster car. Love Ferraris, but the 458 was the first one I would and do own. Totally agree. 355s should still be 60-80k and Dinos 120-140. Stupid prices for not great drivers and not special.
You get worked up over a few 1980's Cherokee's garner 5 or 8 grand more than you think they should, but don't even touch the 70's and 80's Bronco's that have routinely of late sold for 30 to 60 grand more than most of us would have ever believed ten years ago.
What I feel like hoovie forgets is the reliability of the Cherokee Xj and landcruiser. Back when the Cherokee was under 5k they were an amazing off-road platform. Toss another 5k in aftermarket on it and you have a rig capable of keeping up with any modern vehicle on trails. People don't want newer heavily complicated vehicles when it comes to off-road stuff. The tride and true vehicles really hold there value there. With the abandonment of that market in the new car market unless you spend 60k+ those older plain vehicles are a great choice
I remember when a mint Delorean was $25k and a typical one was 15k. I figured I would get one when hit my life settled, but for what they go for now, the nostalgia just isn’t that strong. I bought a ‘69 911E for $4,500 around 2000. Had I known what they would jump to I would have held onto it… face palm. I had an 80 series Land Cruiser for 20 years, great rig but again, stupid money now. The Supra was a car I had in my wall in highschool (next to a poster of a Delorean and the 80 series Land Cruiser) …. I guess I had good taste based on current values and this list? 😆
People that spends that kind of money to get those vehicle have more dollars than sense. April, they are a nice looking car, BUT BUT they aren't worth more $20,000 MAXIMUM.
True fact - my old Buick Regal was faster than the DeLorean. No, it was a plan vanilla V6. The problem was the DeLOrean had 130HP and a 0-60 time of 10.5 seconds from the factory, with suspension that rivaled an old AMC from the 70s... Yes, it was turgid and slow and the joke at the time when the movie came out was that it couldn't even REACH 88mph. Testing had it at 105 mph at about a mile. Anything over 70 was a legitimate struggle for it and took forever to develop speed in top gear, having the aerodynamics of an actual brick.
I genuinely do *not* understand why people pay so much more for a very low mileage car. First of all, the sheer number of "low mileage" cars is... let's say suspicious. But most importantly, even if the mileage is verifiable, I would rather have a car with "normal" mileage that has been regularly driven and maintained.
Had a Grand National in the 90’s & thought I over paid for it at $18k. GM plastic fantastic interior & numb driving experience. Don’t understand people’s fascination with them
LS swapping a regular G body is the way I would go if I wanted that type of car ever again; I drove one that cost about 20K to do & it would beat even the GNX in every metric. They are pretty comfy, fairly practical, and are still by far the cheapest 80's poster car.
While I do agree that the air-cooled 911's are over-valued, you may be over stating how many they built. There are more first & second gen Boxsters than ALL of the air-cooled 911's combined. Hard to fathom, but production & assembly were completely different back then. Any air-cooled 911 is relatively rare, regardless of the model. They are coming back to earth a little lately, but the days of a clean SC for $10k are gone forever.
One vehicle I am glad appreciated is CGT. I have been blessed to buy one back in 2006 I would never sell mine as Porsche will never make anything like this again
Quite a few intelligent car buyers are really turned off by the over complication and over computerfication of new cars - $5500 to fix a tail light with water in it, or the HVAC that goes nuts and requires rework. Better to buy something that just had parts that came in two states: works or broken, rather than something that can operate along a whole spectrum of possible misfunction/dysfunction. So an older Jeep or an older Porche can be far more preferable than a new pandora's technology shop of horrors.
Honestly the unmolested xj's are the only ones going for stupid money as soo many have been modded and or destroyed. They remain popular due to being nearly invincible with the "special" years being 2000 and 2001 as those are non renix engines, and easiest to service. Cheap xj's can still be had, with mods, and sometimes even stock, although expect varying degrees of neglect here as I picked up mine in October with 240,000 for only $1,500. Granted my stock xj didn't come with an exhaust, ventilation via rust, and the check engine light works flawlessly, but I am never stranded or stuck.
