Mazzy Star played the Majestic Ventura Theatre, Nov. 1, 2018.
After the show, Hope stopped to sign autographs for fans on her way to her transportation.
In the video, Hope declines to divulge her cat's name to the fan who asks, but she does mention her cat by name in this quote found in a Dec. 11, 2018 article at Bella Union site, an article about her then new song collab with Mercury Rev covering a song Bobbie Gentry recorded in 1968, "Big Boss Man." HOPE QUOTE: “Well, the only boss man in my life is my cat Herman so this song was a bit tricky for me but I am so honoured to have been asked to be a part of this amazing group of women paying tribute to such an inspirational artist. I’ve always been a fan of Mercury Rev and Bobbie Gentry, so needless to say I am over the moon to be a part of this project."
There was a time years ago when Hope would not sign autographs. She changed her mind 'cause it hurt fans' feelings.
Here are some article/interview excerpts with Hope quotes on the subject of giving autographs:
From a Dec. 29, 2009 article in The Quietus:
QUOTE: Sandoval, who has previously made no secret of her belief that autographs are a silly transaction, if musicians would be happier without all the media hoopla.
"That would definitely be better", she reflects, "but that's
never going to happen. There are certain bands that just do
it for some people. And people like to look up to something.
To idolise. That's in our nature. But I do sign autographs
now: I just think that it's not really necessary. I spent a
long time not doing it, and I felt really bad afterwards
because it hurt people's feelings, so eventually I just
gave in. People are sensitive."
-And this one from an Oct. 11, 2002 article in The Telegraph (UK) where Hope sounds less in favour of giving autographs than she did in 2009 (or seems to be in 2018 as we see from this video):
QUOTE: Sandoval once witheringly commented that signing something was too much like surrendering control.
"I said that? Mmm." She gives an amused bleat. "I mean, autographs are so funny. I don't think it's good to encourage that sort of thing. Why do people want to have an autograph? What does it do for you?"
It's the only physical part of someone that a fan can take away with them.
"They don't really need it. They've got the record. They've already had the best part. It's not that big a deal. I just feel it's a little bit. . . a little bit silly.'"
For some, being asked for your autograph is one of the minor trappings of success. For Sandoval, it's a distraction.
"Having some kind of popularity is just strange."
