As with most of her songs from across such a vast repertoire, this one, particularly, with its perfectly harmonized song structure, lyrics with verses that slowly emerge and dissipate, delivered by Hope's painfully beautiful voice, creates a feverish landscape of sound, that Hope embodies with a subdued yet very raw emotionality, that is transferred on to the listener with unsparing force, as a profound, very viscerally emotional experience, and be guided by her comforting voice to venture confronting or revisiting all that each of us privately bears the grief of. It's really unfortunate that Hope Sandoval's personal projects haven't received the sort of exposure and awareness they deserve, although to her credit, that doesn't shape her work or expression, her low profile public life testifies to her commitment to filtering her output into uniquely beautiful musical experience, that comes our way once every few years.
This singer reminds me of my step mom who mysteriously died in the back of a van amongst a bunch of traveling hippies. Not the singer but her music encapsulates the sadness of this tragic heroine
there's a bluebird in my heart that wants to get out but I'm too clever, I only let him out at night sometimes when everybody's asleep. I say, I know that you're there, so don't be sad. then I put him back, but he's singing a little in there, I haven't quite let him die and we sleep together like that with our secret pact and it's nice enough to make a man weep, but I don't weep, do you? -Charles Bukowski
I didn't really get her music the first time I heard it; but the more I listen to it, the more I love it. It evokes a mood I sink deeper into the more I listen. I've replayed this at least 10 consecutive times now.
One of my fav recordings by Hope/Mazzy. The guitar sounds like a far off train. Banjo & piano, sound of fret change on the acoustic strings. The backing vocals. It all comes together. Thinking it might be a masterpiece.
love hope's voice - but it's really the music/guitar work that catches me with the 'warm inventions' Her voice & the guitar work perfect each other.....
Is that the devil in your skies Is that what's glowing in your eyes Is it me that wants to leave Is it me that you should deceive Is that the devil in your eyes Is that the way I should...be surprised Should I be fooled by you Or should I quit Is that the devil in your veins Or just some kind of symphony Should I just laugh and pretend you were never clear I'll come around your place And sympathize till your days...gone Till your days...gone Is that the devil in your face Or just a blue bird that's left his place In your smile that always sets the sun In your tears that never...let me go Let me go Never...let me go Never...let me go
you just pipped me to the post with the lyrics, well posted Nody! :-) .. I'm sure that you know Blue Light and Blue Flower too (Mazzy Star) .. Hope prefers to sing in the darkness with just a tinge of Blue Light ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bSxJp3dE0HY.html

Her darkness shows her light, you cannot shine your true light till you are conscious of the existence of darkness, like pain, pain of heart that affects your mind and how you express that emotion, her lyrics are so very moving and real
Don't give up fella. I felt the same for so long, but then I found her in the most unexpected of circumstances. I believe there's someone out there for you too.
