A beautiful Sunset walk up the Valley of Hope Gill along side Hope Beck to the Summit of Hopegill Head with a descent via Whiteside Edge down the Ridge of Dodd.
Hopegill Head is the middle fell of three fells on a ridge that starts at Braithwaite and goes west for eight kilometres to conclude at the northern end of Crummock Water.
The other two fells on the ridge are Grisedale Pike and Whiteside.
The fell is often referred to locally as Hobcarton Pike as it stands at the head of Hobcarton Gill. However, the Ordnance Survey have officially named the fell Hopegill Head on maps after Hope Gill, which is another valley that goes north-west from the summit.
Hopegill Head reaches a height of 770 metres (2526 feet) and has two subsidiary summits, Ladyside Pike (703 metres / 2306 feet) and Sand Hill (756 metres / 2480 feet)
Hopegill Head’s most striking feature is the 130-metre-high (417-foot-high) cliff of Hobcarton Crag, which drops precipitously to Hobcarton Gill on the fell's north east side. These cliffs are unsuitable for conventional rock climbing because they are made of crumbly Skiddaw Slate.
Whiteside forms a shallow crescent, concave to the south and fringed on that face by the great wall of Gasgale Crags. These drop 500 ft direct from the summit ridge into the valley below. The eastern end of the fell connects to Hopegill Head without any great loss of height, while the western end of the ridge descends steeply over Whiteside End to the Vale of Lorton. The subsidiary top of Whin Ben (1,355 ft) stands at the south west corner.
The northern slopes are much more extensive with two long ridges being thrown out from the main mass of the fell. The shorter is Penn, while further to the east is Dodd (1,489 ft). The valley of Hopegill separates Dodd from Ladyside Pike and the northern ridge of Hopegill Head.

Bloomin eck! Andy Iv'e got to say this is the best bit of filming I've ever seen of this area. It looks a great path up too. The footage between 9.48 - 12.26 is utterly mind blowing. Staggeringly beautiful. The light looks absolutely amazing. Got to say I watched with a tinge of envy as you walked along the edge. It looked like you had the whole of the fells to yourself. One of those moments when you feel great to be alive. wonderful! Say hello to the Rockstar. Cheers and thanks for posting this epic.

Hi Andrew. Wonderful video, such stunning views. I was meant to do Hopegill Head and white side a few months ago from Grasmoor but they were in the clouds so I came down Gasgale Gill. Wow what a valley that is? Thanks for sharing yours and Billy’s adventure. All the best Dave.

Well I can’t believe I didn’t know about that route up Hope Gill that’s my type of walk. For a short walk after work usually Whin Ben,Whiteside,East top and back down but with a 3yr old border terrier on a lead going back down is not good. Pleased have come across your channel awesome content and from a local lad first class 👌

Brilliant video again Andy! I love the comparison between this route and the one on an earlier video when you walked it along the east flank to Ladyside Pike from further up the road. The ascent at the end of the valley looked pretty brutal but still a good option to know about. The drone footage is magnificent just stunning scenery in every direction. Cheers once again

Aye mate I was gonna do Ladyside Pike again but opted for the shorter version up the Valley on account I knew I'd run out of daylight...I'm pleased you watched the Ladyside Pike video both are cracking and always quiet ways up Thanks again Tony very much appreciated Have a great weekend ATVB Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐

Hey Andy, 1st of all you said good evening at the beginning of your video, that is a first for me watching you but I got why soon enough. Just stunning filming light and shade on the mountains with music to match, superb drone futage. The slow motion bits with the legs out, something for the ladies LOL. Special film mate and what I loved an as extra is you were alone as it is holiday season, love it. I was up there this week and though nowhere near your level, I did Seat Sandal and Tarn Cragg which I have never done but was alone on both with my pup Bodie though packed in Grasmere, loved it too. Great film as usual Andy, I know film does not do what you see in reality justice but what a great video to show us. Excellant and another level as usual. Take care

Thanks for the teriffic feedback Steve Seat Sandal is a lovey Hill that Ridge up the front from Grasmere gives beautiful light at Sunset I know because I've done it...I've done lots of walks over Sunset and even later into the night that hour after Sunset Twilight is special the best time on't Hills...haha aye my gorgeous legs look great in slow motion but not as good as our Billy he glows in the Sunlight and makes fantastic POV filming...hope your having a great weekend bud next two videos will be a lovey relaxed day with Tracey on Barrow and Outerside and yesterday's Solo with Billy another roughneck off piste rout onto High Spy and Maiden Moor. What an amazing evening you had! The light was stunning. Beautiful video. I hope, more people will find your channel. Otherwise, they miss out. How scary is Whiteside edge? Is it very exposed? Has Tracey done it?
@RockStar67
@RockStar67 Год назад
Hiya Andrea Whiteside Edge is fine it has a steep side into Gasgale Gill and a softer grassy side down to Dodd theres multiple paths some well down away from the crest of the rocky ridge...lol i asked Tracey and her ascent was up the front from Crummock end and she hated it she was terrified....easiest way if you don't like exposure is to go up the way I came down via Dodd brings you up about half way between Wainwrights Summit and Hopegill Head Summit both ends are steep but the Ridge up and down from Dodd is a nice easy way onto a spectacular Ridge...thanks for watching and the lovely comment very much appreciated Andy and The ROCK STAR ⭐
