Here's my review of the E-Flite V900 from Horizon Hobby. It's designed to fly at well over 100mph on just the typical 3S 2200mah packs most hobbyists have in their hangar. Put in a 4S pack and don't blink 'cause you will miss it!

I just learned the hard way that you must launch the V900 in SAFE mode.I had real.squarrly hand launches using a 9×6 prop,than a crash using the 8×8 prop.I went back to the 9×6 prop and launched in SAFE and had no problems.

She's got a bit of propeller torque for sure! It's fast and sleek, and SAFE has saved my plane more than I can count. Happy Flying!

Thanks. The V900 is one of my favorites to take to the field. Just toss it in the back seat fully assembled and get some flight time. Happy Flying!

Thanks Steven! You will have a lot of fun with the V900. It flies more like a jet than a prop plane and even sounds like one too. Happy Flying!

very nice landings :)

Thanks! The V900 is actually easy to land if you treat it more like a jet than a prop plane. No more prop breaks once I figured that out. 😅

Great video Patrone. How often do you break a propeller on the landings? Thinking about getting this one. Mahalo!
@dronepatrone
@dronepatrone 2 года назад
Aloha Andrew, Thanks for watching! Surprisingly a broken prop is rare. Come in with a nice low angle glide and full up elevator just before touchdown and it will land with no issue. I've broken a total of three props since I got it, two were cause I came in to fast on the landing and one was cause I found that one and only divot in the field. Happy Flying!

Can you fly this plane with an DX8e? We can bind and all but the motor arm and disarm are backwards and at other times we can't cut off the motor... with the DXe we can cut on and off the motor but can't bind it with safe😕
@dronepatrone
@dronepatrone 3 года назад
On the DX8e make sure that your dual rates are only on Aileron, Elevator and Rudder. That your throttle cut is set to -130 and +100 not just -100 since it might not be enough to kill the motor. You can reverse it in the throttle cut menu. Also throttle trim may need to be set to zero / all the way down for proper throw. On the DXe you may need to update to the latest firmware but, it should work just fine with the V900 even with the original firmware. You may need to assign the safe select button by flicking the switch 5 times while holding both sticks in the inner bottom position and if using a 3 position switch you must flick it to the extremes not just the middle position, so full up and full down. Let me know if this helps. Happy Flying!

Just crashed a few times with maiden flights on a 3 cell. both times it rolled to the left with hand launching. I'm flying without the original Spektrum Safe things, I replaced them with my own Futaba Fasst receiver. Is this plane flyable without that Safe mode at all? I broke the prop also two times, a little bit afraid to launch this plane again. What I read is that this plane has a little torque to the left at launch. Am I right? And the throttle, 1/3 gas is enough? Or better 1/2 ? What is your experience in these things?
@dronepatrone
@dronepatrone 3 года назад
Hi Cor Hofstee, Sorry to hear about the crashes. This plane is very flyable without the stabilization but, will be a handfull at launch as you've experienced. There are two things working against you at launch that the AS3X and Safe compensate for; the torque roll and the small control surfaces/low control authority at slow speed. My recommended no stabilization 3S launch: 1. Make sure to balance the plane at the recommended CG, slightly nose heavy is ok. 2. 40-50% throttle at launch, toss it at about 10-15 degrees nose up. Smooth and straight is important. 3. Quickly get to your control sticks and compensate for the roll, DO NOT PUNCH THE THROTTLE. (slow and smooth throttle is paramount) 4. With the plane still slightly nose up, slowly add throttle and reduce up elevator for straight and level flight. 5. Once on step the plane with fly very precisely and the controls will be appropriate for the speed. 6. Landing is similar to an EDF jet, start to bleed off speed sooner and finally land with full up elevator at 10-15 degrees nose up. She'll float down and slide without breaking a prop. Hope that was helpful. Happy Flying!

Thank you for your quick answer. The plane is arywing today - I'm curious how it is to fly. What do you recommend for the first flights? With or without safe mode? And what's your low dual rates? I programmed 75% and 25% Expo. Im an experienced pilot, espacialy on 3D helikopters. BR Pius

Hey Pius, This flies more like a jet than a prop plane. Follow the manual for your first few flights; clevis position, throws and CG. Your settings are close to the recommended settings in the manual so if that's where you feel comfortable, it should be fine. I run 100/70% throws and 30% Expo. I have no problem admitting that I use SAFE on a switch with this plane especially on take off. It's a fast plane with a small profile that can disappear fast if you blink and SAFE has saved this plane more than once. Take off for me consists of SAFE on, High Rates, 50-70% throttle, a football toss at about 10-15 degrees nose up, a quick compensation for the torque roll, then once on step I slowly reduce the throttle to about 25-30% for straight stable flight and turn SAFE off. Landing is very much jet like, long shallow angle to bleed off speed, then high alpha and power off right at the end. I feel it lands better with SAFE off. You'll know you got it right when broken props are but, a distant memory. If you choose to leave SAFE on for the entire flight just be aware that it needs a lot of room for turning and landing. Happy Flying!

Hallo this is me again. Have two last questions before I will throw the plane in the air. 🙃😉 A lot of people say that 100% DR is too much to fly. Is it OK to start with 85%DR and 30%Expo or is that to low when safe mode is on? I have 70% on my second bank. (only dx6i). Second question. After trimming down the throttle for the bind progress, do you trimm it back or will you fly with trimms down. When I go to middle position with the trimms the motors starts running. When I subtrim the throttle I need to change the throttle endpoints to reach 100%. What do you recommend? BR Pius

Nice flight! No such thing as speed limits in the sky, huh? 😂
@dronepatrone

On 4S and a dive it will easily go past 140mph. Also it's surprisingly smooth in slow flight. I mistreated it in the air to see if it would misbehave and it just bounced right back into shape with a little throttle.
