Well you really hit me this week with something I never knew anything about before. I had (have) a single power mast system but knew nothing of the two mast method. Wonderful video again. Thank you Oscar. David.

Haven't had a layout for many years now, but did have the overhead wires on part of it. You can control both trains off a single winding transformer providing both trains ran in the same direction, if one was reversed it would short out. This is why for full control you do need two transformers or one with two independent windings.

Excellent, Oscar! An insight into what many couldn’t afford! (Further than an inclusive train set). Brill series, thanks for sharing.

A wonderful video Oscar & great info on a book that I didn't realise existed until now. I am a huge fan myself of all the electric locos Triang produced. Fantastic models & great to understand how the system all works. Look forward to next week's episode. Best regards Steve.

Great video ,I wish when hornby re released there catenary system it was like the triang one instead of the white plastic ,I had the Lima system that was quite good and done just what you’ve done ,superb Oscar I now have a German overhead on my layout ,great as always mate 👍🏻😊

It was a shame they didn't keep the catenary like the earlier version. I have seen the Lima catenary it has much stronger bases on it. Is your German overhead live? Oscar

Another great video Oscar. Love seeing the layout in operation . It just goes to show how advanced Triang Hornby were and the operating potential that was there . I’m not sure how many people actually went for the full operating centenary, I suspect not many . If they did I’ll bet there were some spectacular collisions ! I’ve got an AL1 because my mum and dad thought it looked like the Glasgow Electrics then coming into service (class 303!), well it was blue with three windows in the front. Never progressed to the catenary though.

Definitely lots of potential for some great crashes Russell. Especially on a small layout. As I mentioned in the video I find it hard to co-ordinate the two models together. Oscar

Hi Kevin, I know what you mean when reading about wiring it can appear to be black magic! I am around schoolboy level of understanding in electronics but it's very satisfying when it all works. Thanks for watching Oscar

great stuff again Oscar. I remember reading the double panto locos only picked up on one . Nice to "hear" yours are noisy like mine. I guess as an 8 year old it seemed normal. I am amazed how locos have become more like an accurate model and not toys.

Thankyou for another interesting video . I wondered if on another video you would show how catenary joins over points and crossovers are done as well as just joints in the wires and the size and sort of wire you use as it is rarely discussed and I’m sure there are lots of viewers who would be really interested and may have been put off because they are not sure what to buy for an install . Your knowledge would be greatly appreciated I’m sure . Kind regards Richard

Good morning Richard, glad you found the video interesting. That's a great idea for a future video. I've had a great deal of fun and got a terrific sense of achievement working with the catenary. Tri-angs instructions are brief but do the job. However, I've found you need to be prepared for a fair amount of trial and error, whilst keeping in mind this system was produced as part of a range toy really, quite some time ago. Thanks again for watching. Oscar

Hi Oscar. Well that was a great video about the over head catenary and how it works very interesting I always thought they were just for show, that how everybody seem to use just for show on these modern layouts ,so as I said I found it very interesting. Regards George...

Wow that a great layout from back in the days when things were simple to operate before the days of DCC although i guess the Hornby Zero One... was it ? the first DCC controller was available. Great to see the old technology still works from the Over Head Lines, great video to watch! Smashed the 🔔Bell 🔔 for future videos and the 👍LIKES👍

This is a fascinating concept. I just wonder how it works with isolating tracks. Given the return is now on the opposite side isolation of both tracks would need to be installed. Apart from that slight complication, this opens up so many possibilities on a DC layout if it was an all electric layout. I think it may be limited for a combination diesel/electric layout, but interesting none the less.
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 3 года назад
Hi, it can become quite complex you do have to insult the return rail for the overhead this is not always the rail needed for models running on the track. So isolating both rails becomes more practical where overhead and rail powered models are to be used together. Isolating clips for the overhead were planned but never made it to market. Some fine stiff plastic the same at the wire connectors would do the job but so far have not come across anything that suits. When two overhead locomotives are used in opposite directions using opposite returns you get the track powered models moving its not a perfect system but is great fun. Thanks again take care. Oscar

So pretty much the Trix Twin system except with Triang Hornby catenary instead of an unsightly 3rd rail. I still run Zero One on my layout and have done since buying my master controller in 1979. Pioneering DCC so way ahead of it's time. All the locos that the instruction book stated needed a permanently coupled wagon to house the loco decoder module was inaccurate. I managed to install the modules in the water tanks (with double sided tape) on R.355 "Polly"/"Nellie"/ "Connie", the Triang North British 0-4-0 shunter and the smallest RTR loco I've installed on is the Dapol "Pug". Zero One didn't like the overhead system due to the power mast bases having an AC shorting capacitor, the same as the Series 3 and Super 4 power clips. Zero One powered the tracks 18 Volts AC so the power clips and power masts would trip the short circuit protection. These had to be modified or the track and catenary power fed by alternative means. System 6 power clips omitted the capacitor.

Great information about the Zero 1. Thanks for sharing it. I may be tempted to experiment with it at some point. Oscar

An interestijng approach, I guess if you had an only overhead powered layout that would allow for all sorts of things, but rather closes out the option of normal two rail. I've used the earleir method to allow a steam locomotive to "recuse" a "dailed" electric, as long as you leave the pantograph up of course! Great video although when watched full screen appeared out of focus at times, this may of course be my eyes!
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 5 лет назад
The method where you run a steam engine and electric locomotive is more flexible. It would have to be electrics only to take advantage of the method shown in the video. iPhone doesn't always focus where you might think and its not always practical to fix the focus. Thanks for watching again Andrew. Oscar

Is your layout Super 4 track? I was wondering if I could get this old catenary, but my layout is System 6 modern track. I think the catenary does not look too overscale viewed from a distance.
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 5 лет назад
Hi, the layout is all Super 4. When tri-ang introduced System 6 in 1970 the Catenary bases for the masts were adapted to fit both Super 4 and System 6 the items in the range gained suffix of U to indicate the could be used on both track systems. This only available for a short time. When the Tri-ang Hornby became Hornby Railways in the early 70s (1972/73) the catenary range disappeared sadly. This makes these universal bases quite had to find. Tri-ang did make a screw down a base R.314 ( www.tri-ang.co.uk/aohs2.html ) that was designed to be used around pointwork where the regular bases could not be used. These could easily be used with any track system. Hornby Railways reintroduced a revised catenary system in about 1988 and remained available till the late 90s these is this would be the stuff to look for, it does not look quite as appealing as the earlier Tri-ang catenary but the bases that were made will fit the older range of catenary. Have a lookout for a late 80s early 90s Hornby Railways catalogue and look at the bases, they have been used in a number of other ways in the system and very often show up in those bits and pieces boxes at model railways show the can be very useful. Hope this was of some help, thanks for watching. Oscar

This range left the Catalogue by 1972. Hornby had another go at it in the late 80s early 90s but nothing like the original Tri-ang products. Although is shared some of the parts and it did not look very good either. Thanks again for watching. Oscar

Not having done it of course, I would have thought if you used a relay connected to both tracks with the ground wire turning on the relay would give a ground on one side and turning off the relay would give a ground on other track so you would be able to go both ways.
