Hornby RR HST R3608 - Review
Video V.72
This is the re-tooled Lima intercity originally released in the early 1980’s
Here I look at the 2019 Railroad version compared to the 2013 super detailed model, let's see how they both perform on running and quality.
This RR R3608 HST is DCC ready and only requires one decoder for power car as dummy has no power or pickup capabilities.
For further product details refer to Hornby.com

Love this video! Brings back so many happy memories! The first train set I ever remember getting was the hornby clock work set in the 70s The first electric train set I ever had was the 125 back in the late 70s, maybe very very early 80s and so this model really holds a special place in my heart! Thanks for taking the time to make and share this video, I’m now on the hunt for this set!!

Great video. The Hornby Railroad HST is based on the Lima tooling, which was far superior to the Hornby 1980s tooling.

Absolutely Hornby own the Lima tooling which was railroad range and yeah absolutely superior from that time but now branded under Hornby so at least there listening 👍 Thanks again

Great review👍 Goes to show how good quality and value the Railroad range has become...we know there are those who swear blind anything but the super detail versions are inferior, however at approx £110, I would rather have 2 pairs of the Railroad version running round my layout than just one marginally better version costing £250. Hornby need to expand the Railroad range further as there is now a huge market for accurate looking budget models. It has gone full circle...updated Lima models are now becoming the way forward. Well done Hornby & great video👍

Thanks buddy and I totally agree Yeah I’m the same with rather a budget loco which performs the same as the high end as much as I love super details but as you said it’s the steep cost which is out of my reach As said yeah it’s great to see Hornby embracing this side of the hobby Have a great Christmas buddy 🎄 All the best wishes Garry

its an amazing model and Hornby really have made the old Lima tools look like an entirely new mode, i'm very tempted to get one and fit it with directional lights as you can get directional lights for lima HST as on ebay you can get directional lights for Hornby/Lima HSTs for like £5. I already have the set of 2013 ones with DCC sound bt you can never have enough HSTs!
@cheekytek
@cheekytek 4 года назад
Absolutely HST heaven The old Lima is what this release is in every way -except the dummy has no pick up facility just a rolling chassis The old Lima dummy car does have pick ups which the new body will fit directly onto the old Lima chassis So again there is diversity in swapping. Definitely a great set 👍
@trainsontuesday
@trainsontuesday 4 года назад
Hi Garry, I concur with Jamie Douglas. I went and got my Lima HST out and sat here comparing as I watched the video and came to the same conclusion, it's just the old Lima one on a modified chassis. I can hardly believe all the discrepancies in the original Hornby. Glad I got my Lima ones in the 1980's. I also noticed that your 1980's Hornby one has the wrong side frames on the power bogie, I have no idea where that one came from but it's not HST. All that said I might be in the market for one. lol. All the best, David.
@cheekytek
@cheekytek 4 года назад
Hi David LOL they are nice.. Yeah that is correct its merely the old Lima HST release under new Hornby - Ironically your old chassis will actually fit directly on to the new version body creating a dummy car with pickups so you have the advantage over many of us for directional lighting.... so would be a better HST set.. The old Hornby HST's I've had 7 of these and for some reason they have all had them horrible bogies sets - think this was at production at the time and nothing like HST bogies.. All the best Garry

Yep, it’s a Lima. See if you can get hold of a 80s Lima set and compare it with that. Comparing 80s Hornby & 80s Lima is comparing apples with oranges. 👍🏼

The tooling may be ex-Lima but Hornby have upgraded the model with better lights as well as a basic cab interior with a new much quieter motor and a PCB for DCC compatibility. I have a 1995 Lima HST in the swallow livery as a train set and the power unit doesn't have lights or a cab interior and the pancake motor is much louder in my experience. I hope that Hornby will do the Intercity Executive and the Swallow liveries in the future on this revised model.

Gaz, it's great to see you looking more like your old self again. Keep punching kid and you'll be back on top. The review brings back memories of the 80s with debates on which was best, Hornby or Lima. Back then we were trying to make a " model railway" using toy trains where as now we are using well detailed model trains even with the budget ranges. Seeing the two running side by side you can hardly notice the difference. A couple of hours modeling on the 2019 edition will bring it even closer to hifi. Happy New Year to you buddy, regards Bobby 'T'

Very timely, Garry. Thanks for sharing. I'm a huge HST fan, but other than last year's Swallow Valenta's, I haven't been able to get the more recent DCC versions (certainly not for anything close to a sensible price!). Been watching out for this Railroad release since they announced it, but hard without seeing them myself at shows or local model shop. Seeing your side-by-side shows that it's good enough, for me. Unless you're really up close, the differences aren't there for a model that's only just over £100. People will always gripe, but I think Hornby is trying to find a middle ground here, and doing a good job. Will definitely be getting one! Cheers, Iain.
@cheekytek
@cheekytek 4 года назад
Hi Iain -Great hearing from you. Absolutely agree, That it looks like Hornby are trying to accommodate the middle market and to be honest that's where the gap is.. It did bug me that there wasn't any close up shots of it or extra detailing information.. and again i was trying to find more about it before release.. But all said - it's a cracking model, it's definitely a complete release of the old original Lima HST under Hornby labelling with the addition to DCC chassis in the power car but nothing in the dummy.. Cheers Garry

@0145jjd 4 года назад
Hornby hasn't retooled it, it's the Lima tooling which was better than Hornby's from day one, most of the railroad range is old Lima tooling now with better mechanics, electrics and in some cases printing

@0145jjd 4 года назад
@@cheekytek Hi no offense taken, Hornby do carry the Lima brand aswell as many others that were either brought out or rescued, Bachmann did similarly with Mainline and Graham farish, if you're interested in loco hauled mk3s try and find and old Jouef one although HO scale imo they are the only ones who modeled it correctly until the recent releases by Oxford rail
@tjfSIM

Indeed, I remember seeing Lima HSTs on layouts back in the 80s and thinking how much better they were than the Hornby versions - especially the cab fronts. Lima got the curves of the cab and light clusters pretty much spot on, whereas the Hornby model was always much too square. And the lights on the original Hornby model were very badly done, as the clear plastic mouldings never actually fitted the curvature of the body (that is visible on the model you have here). It's nice to see the Lima tooling getting another lease of life! Great video and review :)

Thanks to all Yeap definitely agree to what all has been said 😉👍 Let’s all be honest whoever designed the 80’s Hornby HST obviously had a giant wedgie at the time 😂 Will be interesting to see what other Lima range Hornby May think of releasing 🤔👍

I have to proudly confess that I am a Western region steam man taking a liking for kings and castles although living near Exeter in the 1970/80s, class 47's 50's and HST's where the backbone of West of England trains. So as far as HST's are concerned I have two lima power and dummy cars in blue and grey and an orginal hornby power car with the guards compartment in it. I hope to get the railroad set and buy enough coaches for a London train and NE/Sw formation

This looks a great model for a Railroad range. For the price, its not a bad model as it now has better lighting and a new more reliable motor. The only thing missing is that there needs to be a driver in the cab but that is easily fixed by us modellers. I know its ex-Lima but the Lima model always seemed more accurate in looks to me as not many HST's had the guards compartment window where I lived as most of them were either panelled over when the HST's got a TGS or they were built without one in the case of the Class 254 HST units. Some still had the extra window which were mostly the Virgin XC and MML HST's which lasted until about 2004. Not sure if you read the comments but I wanted to thank you for this video and I will be getting one in the new year.
@cheekytek
@cheekytek 4 года назад
Many Thanks buddy Funny - I had the same conversation with susannah on the guard windows because of the changes in stock over years 👍 Pleased this was of use -personally I love the model and feel it’s a massive step for Hornby - providing they realise the potential of these cheaper sets to us guys, they’d sell many more at this price than a few at a higher price 😊 food for thought for them 😉 Thanks buddy and wishing you all the best Garry

Aren’t you comparing an original Hornby model with the ex Lima one ? It’s not a new tooling as such but it does have a new motor. It does look very good . I have a Lima InterCity Swift one that still cuts the mustard . Great review . Hope Hornby do an LNER one . I’d be tempted at £110 but not at £230. Same with intercity executive. I’d be tempted at the lower price but not higher. . You are correct the original 1977 version is now well outclassed . HSTs fantastic

I am yes but this is what is confusing as its now released as a Hornby product under Hornby based on the original Lima product.. so this is a Hornby on Hornby review but on the Lima tooling - lol So confusing when I did this lol.. under close inspection there are a couple tweeks based on the original Lima HST as I visited Susannah at Milden Hall as she has one to compare to.. we actully did a livestream on this comparing all four models at times it was hard to tell them all apart except the old Hornby was the elephant in the room.. lol yeap new chassis with quiet motor which had a good pull load if I'm honest.. Many thanks for your comment buddy Garry..

Useful review, I've been thinking about getting one of these as I have always rated the old Lima body as it had an accurate (for the time) NE/SW batch body (the units that were built for Cross Country services), and until we get some super-detail accurate Mk3 HST trailers, I've been reluctant to invest in the superdetail power cars. The paint job compared to the old Lima version is cracking, and the DCC compatibility is good. The fact it can accommodate the old Lima bodies also makes it possible to buy two, refit Lima IC Swallow bodies on one and keep the blue on the other and have two HSTs for the price of one superdetail version. Thanks for sharing the video, it's helped me make my mind up. Hornby might just be getting some of my bunce this year after all!

A risky strategy some might say, but from watching your review I don’t think I need worry. The model looks fantastic & compared with £250 for a slightly more detailed version, I’d rather have two RR versions👍 and do a little extra work on them to make them look even more realistic. The hst power cars you are saying are new date back to 1982 .I know I was selling them I at the London toy fair lima were distributed by eisenmann the following year taken over by Riko international the owners of the model chain I worked for. The models on display were hornby power cars with jouef mk 3 trailers . It's interesting to see in this year's hornby centenary catalogue no blue grey mk 3 coaches are available. The main difference between the two power cars was the roof deflector modification carried out to combat exhaust. The hornby version at this representing original production cars of 1976, the lima post 1979 mods. Hornby later corrected theirs but lima version became the modellers choice until 2008 when hornby decided finally a power car that modellers desired . But wait a moment perhaps someone will decide it's time for another model as it's not up to today's standards, the bullied Pacific , the class 50 ,the class 08 . Already we are seeing manufacturers treading on each others toes in the quest to deliver the ultimate 4 mm models. Look at the scale gauge ,will these expert be changing their inaccurate track for more scale gauge , I don't think so.

Thanks for the comments very appreciated and for the history again very interesting by far Yeap and I agree as you mentioned. But does show that Hornby are trying harder than other retailers to hit the middle market even reproducing this Lima tooling under the Hornby brand with such tough competition out there and they can’t be faulted for that. Cheers Garry 👍

It's basically the Lima model from the 1980s as is much of the Hornby Railroad range. Lima's HST always beat the hell out of the Hornby rendition IMHO especially with scale length Mk III Trailers from the word 'go' whereas Hornby had those 'orrible short based and short-windowed Mk IIIs. Real kiddies trade stuff whereas Lima's model was more discerning.

Absolutely correct but under Hornby labelling with a few tweaks i.e. DCC chassis. Yeah lol they certainly had the upper hand but hornby had the edge to mass produce hene fading Lima out. but great to see that someone is looking at what was and released this today.. Coaches are a completely same topic.. lol Personally I don't mind the short coaches as it gives a little scope on my layout of running these or they end up near touching nose to nose.. Plus with the ridiculous prices now days.. Cheers Garry

Fantastic review Garry. I remember having the original hornby HST, which is being also released as GWR variant, I was forever stripping it down cleaning the ringfield motor, pick ups etc etc etc. You are so right such scope for improvement. Did you see OOrail’s series on improving hornby 66? Exactly doing what you said. Merry Christmas Garry

Why are the power cars missing the window at the end of the car itself next to guards door? I always remember the trains having this extra window although its hard to tell with the junk vinyls on some of 'em these days.
@cheekytek
@cheekytek 3 года назад
Hi buddy, I really don’t know the reason why they left that out - I also remember that window as modelled on the 2013 model they released - Unless this was modification on the class 43’s over its time - 🤷🏻‍♂️ lol - I will ask around as would be interesting to know why 🤔 Take buddy 👍 And thanks again Garry

Absolutey i really like the Railroad version as it called - having both once its on the layout its very hard to distinguish the two - my only gripe would be no lighting in the dummy - but I’ve now added simple pickups and red LEDs to it now as my latest vid explaining if that helps.. Definitely worth it price wise 👍 Cheers for the feedback Garry 😁

Hi Jerry Yeah the Dummy would need power and pickups added to the wheel sets for a light conversion - Shame Hornby did not add just a little effort but I guess this is what keeps the price low.. I guess a battery system for red lights with a magnet switch to power them off would work well with out all the taking it to pieces.. Cheers Garry

I have inclines the old model would not work well on my layout but my question is the railroad one looks weighty but still not enough for my liking but what is the premium one like compared to railroad one with weight ?
@cheekytek
@cheekytek 4 года назад
I know where your coming from 👍 Okay the swallow livery I have is old Hornby - slips like mad when she’s unhappy The 2019 RR is a lot heavier I’d say just the same as 2013 S-detail in my opinion This RR HST has traction tyres of which I hate but the performance was out standing by pulling off as soon as I started. What I’ll do is a video update where I will add as many coaches on to the RR version to show her brunt 😉👍 Sounds like another video on the way 😬😁😁 Thanks buddy hope this helps

Thanks for posting the review. Had I seen it before Christmas I may have rewritten my letter to Santa! I had been put of by the pre production photos of the black roof. Like many of us the old Hornby was one of the first models I ever got. Pretty sure the body of the Hornby Railroad is the old Lima body however the chassis and motor etc are not. They appear to be new tooling. I had always preferred the shape of the Lima HST. I need to check my Lima body as I don't think it has the recesses for the lugs on the side. Do you have any old Lima HSTs and do you know if they would fit directly onto the chassis? How does it get on with a full 8 coach rake? I may buy one to replace my Lima Blue Grey power cars as the livery would match the coaches. The Lima is a wee bit different colour wise and I assume this is a superior motor.. If possible i may also source chassis motor etc as spares for one of my Lima Intercity power cars there is no guarantee Hornby will ever do that livery and if they did I've always preferred the Lima light grey to Hornbys anyway. Thanks again.

I’ve done a live stream on Susannah’s channel at milden hall on Wednesday 26 dec 2019. We actually put all these under review and showed the old chassis to new.. 👍 I also did a loco load test and successfully pulled 12 cars and it’s own dummy with complete ease no slip due to great traction on the rear tyres Cheers Garry

For a tooling that came out more than a decade ago I find that it's a little overpriced for a Railroad Range model
@cheekytek
@cheekytek 4 года назад
Good point 👍 but they have upgraded the chassis for smoother dcc running So shows they are trying in today high manufacturing environment Personally think many loco’s / coaches now days are well overpriced 👍👍👍👍

cheekytek , supply and demand I guess. They decide the profit margin to make it worthwhile and then we have to make an informed decision. I find bachmann are the chief villains - class 37 is now £140-180, whereas my EWS one I brought in 2015 was £106. A sharp rise.

Thanks for your comment - at time of filming this was based on hornby /on old hornby review - I realise that this is the same tooling as old lima but with little additions and your correct there not a lot of a difference from the old lima except the motor and decoder fittings.. Hornby bought the lima brand and tooling Which I found out after was the re-released Lima now under Hornby brand So i apologise if this seemed a little confusing. But i appreciate your comment - Thank you & All the best Garry
