Hi all, as an update, I am well annoyed, the loco has failed again, clearly with motor issues. Can't now send it back due to the restrictions on us all. Am going to do some extensive testing and see if I can establish the route cause of this.
Looking good Mike - this one seems much better, surprised to see the inconsistency with these; mine was absolutely swimming in lubricant, to the point I was concerned about it flooding the motor! Thanks for sharing, Sam :)
I tried to buy this model twice, both times it turned up smashed to pieces from different places so got the latest Bachmann version instead. Now Im hearing of motor problems Im even more pleased about my brand switch - great video
nice video mike stay safe in these uncertain times and keep entertaining us the hobby will be more important than ever in the coming weeks all the best al 👍😁👍👍👍👍
Glad you got it sorted. Runs lovely. I think most modern steam have inside bearings on the tender instead of pin points, and with added friction from all the tender pic ups too it's common for tender wheels to drag somewhat. Have to say she looks lovely running now
Do you remember the hassles you had Mike with your S15 from Hornby?! Déjà vu! I enjoy your videos and comments. I’ve still got 3 of these models made by Mainline years ago and still going strong - there’s no denying the Hornby model is good looking, but severely let down by the motor - again. As others had mentioned- over lubed, under lubed, all very inconsistent. There is one benefit, if there has to be one during this Covid-19 outbreak and like the UK, at this time here in Australia it’s a “soft lockdown”, is that we get more time with our trains! May good health reign amongst you and your subscribers!👍🏻
Oh yes I'll never forget that, this looked to be going the exact same way. Yes I still have my Mainline class 4 and yes still runs well. Thanks for the good wishes, same back to you
I think that some of Hornby's locos should be sold without motors as "display" models. It looks beautiful but...... Also the drag from the poor tender wheel bearings is really unacceptable. I won' be buying this one. Thanks Mike and a great Covid 19 message. David.
Here is a tip. RE: Your Wera crank pin bolt tool (for speedo cable and other valve gear bolts) SW 2.5. Notice that the bolt develops a flat on the corners and does nor remain pristine? That is because the socket head of the Wera (and most other brands) are slightly concave on the inside at the end. Solution : Use a diamond file (or ward file ) across end of the Wera socket to remove the concave. The socket will then fit snugly over the bolt and no more slippage or rounded corners. Works perfectly for me every time. Also Hornby produce a removal tool for Electric tender plug for extraction and insertion. Part no:X6468. (Approx £8.00 eBay) You may want to show the results and share your findings. Regards Peter
@@ModelRailwaysUnlimited no problem. Just makes the hobby that bit more enjoyable. A couple more: Use "black tack" to secure wires to chassis instead of super glue. It is easy to remove for servicing. I also discovered Ever Build super glue remover. It's cheap, and a few drops on plastic parts that have been fouled by super glue will come up like new with leaving it on for 10 mins and gently rubbing with a cotton bud (QTip) .It doesn't seem to harm the plastic at all (but don't leave it on all day 🥴). May need a few applications with gentle rubbing but results are very pleasing. Clean plastic parts with water afterwards. Before discovering this wonder stuff I virtually destroyed the finish trying to get the glue off!! Regards Peter
Hornby make some superb models but its the build quality and quality control that lets them down! Thankfully i've had no issues with them before but so many others have! They really need to improve their quality control instead of customers having to fix, repair or even send back their models!
New hornby have to much detail think they have forgotten these locomotives are for running and not for show hornby would be better going back to the original models with less cost i only collect 70.s 80.s hornby it is becoming harder for people to afford the new models nearly a weeks wages enjoyed your video always nice to watch people interested in the same hobby.
I’ve just bought a Bachmann 24/1. That has little ‘notches’ on most of the wheels and it needed a good lubrication on axels and worms as it was bone dry on arrival.
Thank you for replying this video. Once again Hornby''s design office is so inconsistent. The J15 has a large flywheel each end of its motor, the latest Duchess pacific which is supposedly the flagship model of their range does not and runs so much worse than the J15. This means Hornby and probably Bachmann as well are making their products down to a price and not up to a standard. This is why American outline locos run so much better than UK outline and all of them have a flywheel drive.
Mike, interesting video, as I expect from you. From what supplier did you get the special crank pin removal tool. Hornby do also have a special tool for removal of the locomotive wiring socket which goes into the tender. Reference no X6468, which I obtained from Hatton's of Widnes.
Hi Mike, Hope you get this resolved. I know that you've experienced problems with some Hornby models previously and it must be very frustrating. However, I'm pretty confident that the retailer concerned will be able to repair the loco's motor or refund you. Paul
Hi Paul, I have contacted them and I am sure they will, however with us all in lock down now there is no hope of sending it back, however I have been right inside and discovered the motor brushes had been miss fitted, there may be too much damage as a result but I have tried to repair.
Thanks, yes it does seem like it, I partly removed the back plate of the motor then reset it, its now running ok, wonder if this reset the brushes or removed an impurity?
Model Railways Unlimited,,,,, the loco is so beautiful it’s unfortunate, I not one to be taking tiny things apart, I have doubts I could fix the problem. Thank you and be safe 😁
They used to be decent mechanically when they were tender driven with ringfields (and could pull alot more) but now its all can motors which u cant service and cant pull the skin off a rice pudding.
@@vikingsmb you carnt oil the gears we have to go the hornby because bachmann etc don't make every class of locomotive I have a hornby duchess it gears keep slipping and I have a b17 that keeps speeding up and slowing down 😡😡
@@jameshardy4354 no worries, you can only on the gears and on the bearings, but they are a pain in the backside. but i prefer to use hornby ringfields and lima ones.
