Joanna - love your plant vids. I appreciate how you approach the conversation from a broad aquarist point of view. Definitely not going into any of my tanks, but I remember as a youngster that hornwort, Vals, amazon swords, and elodea were just about the only plants that were available at my LFS.

I really like Hornwort, I have it in my goldfish pond and it provides shade and cover for the fish, I’m in the UK and it stays in the pond over the Autumn/Winter period when it will sink to the bottom and turn dark in colour and brittle to the touch, then comes back green again in the Spring/Summer. Brilliant plant 😊

I loved hornwort, it actually is kind of beautiful when healthy and clean. I had a small clump that would grow leaps in bounds in my planted aquarium, you could see tons of oxygen bubbling off of it. It only sheds when you either don't have the lighting it needs or nutrients. The more light you have the more nutrients it needs too so you need to be mindful there but a cheap liquid fertilizer does wonders. My one tank was able to produce so much hornwort I could sell massive clumps every 2 days if anyone was buying lol but most of the time I'd trim massive chunks off of it and feed it to my large water turtle, seemed to love the stuff.

Firstly, thank you, Joanne, for all your great videos. However I do have a question about a banana plant which seems to be ‘multiplying’. A couple of the leaves floating on the surface are growing roots at a rapid rate, as are a couple of leaves which have been severed from their stalks. I have no idea what is going to happen next, or if I need to do something so that these new growths survive. Have you had any experience with this? It’s fascinating to watch, but I need to know if there is something I need to do so they don’t exhaust their energy and die.

I mentioned my floating plant in one of your other videos. I am not sure what it is but watching this video I am pretty sure it is hornwort. It is truly a hardy grower. After viewing this video I guess I will not try to plant it in the sub-straight. The important thing is it grows so easily and gives the fry a place to hide and live plants make the fish feel secure. Also as you say it helps to clean the water of nitrates. If I get to much it will go into the blender to make home made fish food.

Hornwort, becomes a thorn when you got filters But worth when you've got a curious betta... I'm glad that it can't be planted and get uprooted all the time by the little guy. I think it works best in a cycled tank than a new tank with fluctuating parameters 😅

If this hornwort is so greedy with nutrients does/ will that help with keeping algae to a minimal?

Hi - yup - that’s how I use it. ☺️

I just bought horn wart from my local pet store, it was labeled as a bunch plant and has a band at the bottom. In the store it was planted. Question, should I take the band off? And can I attach it to an aquarium decoration so that it stays in place? I currently have the bunch tucked into the hole of a log. The bottom of the plant hangs down into the middle of the log. Good idea, bad idea?
@thesmallscape
@thesmallscape 2 года назад
Hi! I would take the band off, it’s usually a stinker planting it anywhere - it seems anywhere the stem touches, the needles will fall off. But it grows so fast you could just trim that part off, worst case. ☺️

Is this a good plant for pea puffer?
@thesmallscape
@thesmallscape 4 месяца назад
Well, pea puffers generally stay toward bottom of tank and hornwort does best floating at top but it will provide some nice cover to block out bright light. Hornwort also is helpful combatting algae and using up extra nutrients in the tank. 😊

Hello Joanna, I just purchased some hornwort and half of it has a white film all over it. Any idea what this white stuff is?

Has anyone ever tried "weaving" the hornwort loosely in something that is grid shape?

can i tie it to any driftwood just like anubias?
@thesmallscape
@thesmallscape 9 месяцев назад
Well…great question! Most have never had any luck doing anything other than letting it float. Wherever it touches anything like driftwood, it tends to die.

Thank you Joanna. Plants confuse me. I have some and it’s hard to understand their needs for thriving. If I out them in the substrate, they don’t do well. I have some easy Planters from Aquarium Coop but not all plants do well in them according to Cory’s website. I put them in not knowing that only certain types of plants can go in those planters. Some are not good for the planters. I have Anubias in a planter and it hasn’t grown at all.
@zsworld6609
@zsworld6609 3 года назад
Anubias grows great in the planters, just keep in mind they are extremely slow growing and it generally takes them a few months for them to start. If you move them, that process will start all over again.
@thesmallscape
@thesmallscape 3 года назад
Hi Bonnie! I understand, it takes time. For Anubias, as long as the rhizome isn’t buried in the substrate you’re good. With just a new leaf created every 3-4 weeks, I find the Anubias nana petite to be more rewarding to watch grow. That’s why I just love the floaters - hornwort, bacopa, salvinia minima and frogbit. Fast to super fast growers that just...float. ☺️

Could I glue hornwort to a rock to keep it in one location so it doesn't rot below the gravel?

Hi no you can’t glue it, just let it float and do it’s own thing.

Why are so many people using commercial products instead of setting up a secondary tank with proper filter material made out of real live plants that catch all excess nutrients inside the water? Seems to me like the aquarium hobby has become more about short-term beautification and much less about the incredible potential it can provide for creativity as a functioning machine. I see a lot of videos promote stuff that is nonsense, like every plant will help with waste inside the aquariums but they never tell you that the ones that grow faster will also do a better job at it. It's also funny to watch those aquariums full of plants with accelerated growth due to CO2 injection which also helps deplete the tank of nutrients faster since there is nothing to decompose that plant material and get it back into the soil/water, so later people are running crazy trying to figure out the "trace" elements that are missing in their aquariums. It's 2022 and it seems like the aquarium hobby should have been made much simpler by now, or is it just me? I know I am crazy, I see it every day in the mirror lol

@@thesmallscape I always wanted to have a RU-vid channel but it didn't quite pan out but I do hope one day to have my own fish store where I teach people how to make simple but affordable tanks. I'd like to show people my small RU-vid channel so I could see you at they don't need to have a lot of money to make an interesting tank. In fact I have two communities and they're in a smaller tank but they're happy. I don't think it's a 10 gallon tank but I know it's not a 5 gallon tank but there's no fighting and because I do maintenance regularly the water is always clean. But it always looks like almond extracted it cuz I put almond leaves in it but I do use a toothbrush to scrape the sides of the tank when Driftwood and leaf leaves kind of build up. They're really quite beautiful and I like to place potted plants on the side of my tank.
