HORRIBLE ICE STORM DAMAGES OUR FARM! 

To make things worse I had to put our feral barn cat Pepe down today. I’m absolutely devastated and it was so unexpected. I walked into the barn and he was extremely neurological. We went to the ER Vet and they said euthanasia was the best course for him. I’m so sad and upset he was beautiful. I will post a picture of him tomorrow. “A year ago you showed up to our barn as a feral cat seeking shelter and safety. You were scared but knew our barn was a safe place so you trusted us. You warmed up to us and even let us pet you a little. Watching everything from the hay loft and sleeping up there was your favorite thing along with wet food! Even though you wouldn’t let us snuggle, you still loved us like we loved you. I’m devastated that you’re gone and life just isn’t fair. Fly free my friend, Pepe the best feral barn kitty ever. 😭❤️”

WE are shocked when mother nature shows us who is in charge. You know, I had no opinion on the lipstick and never would have said anything about it until you brought it up. Today, without all the lipstick your natural beauty shows through. Girl you have it!!!

Kyle is such a good husband, supportive, and helpful. It's nice to see you two work together to care for your farm and animals.

I’m sorry about kitty 🤗🙏 but your home is loving and provides a true sanctuary for all animals and kitty definitely knew this ❤️. That storm was a nasty one! We had the snow start then the freezing rain. The temp dropped then warmed up a bit then everything froze again. At our farm, it’s definitely all crunchy but aren’t able to yank some of the fallen branches free. We’ll have to coordinate the bonfires together next month 😂 Two of my newer apple trees and a walnut tree cracked in half😭 Hope you have a good weekend! 💕🌻

I have never seen anything like all that ice and the damage it has done to the trees before. What a lot of work it has made for you. I hope you get no more damage.

I am so sorry to hear about the cat he was adorable at least he found someone who cared about him when he found you - and I think since he stayed he knew that ( also happy the damage from the storm was not worse)

We had a severe ice storm in February 1994 here in northern Mississippi. The tree branches snapping sounded like gun shots so it sounded like a war going on. We lost power, water and phone service. By mid-day, we decided to head south for a few days. We had huge 150 year old oak trees. When we made it home, my heart broke at the sight of all the broken trees. A lot of them were killed. I'm praying for you and your neighbors and asking God to keep everyone safe especially the linemen that will be working to repairing the power lines.

Am so, so sorry about Pepe. All else sounds ok. Horses don't look their happiest . Am so glad you like to be upbeat . Makes such a huge difference!

The ice storm was brutal. We had a tree fall onto our goat fence. Luckily all the goats were inside when it happend so none of them were harmed but it was pretty scary

Really Chea, such abused horses! Just ask Mushu---no treats for such a good boy? They all know you love and value their individuality. It shows in how they WANT to interact with you even when no treats are involved. How wonderful if all horses belonged with people like you. I didn't know piggies could be potty trained for in the house! Marvelous! And it shows how smart they are. Your trees are very mature and they get the worst breakage in ice. We lost some beauties that shaded the s. side of our house and now have to use the a.c.

In February 2008 we had a severe ice storm in Louisville Kentucky. We were without power for 5 days and my house is all electric. I had to let my dog out around 2am the night it started. I was standing on our deck waiting for her (she was afraid of the dark 😳) to get done and all of a sudden I heard a crack like a gun going off and a limb fell off our neighbors oak tree. It miraculously fell over our fence in a way that the fence was not damaged. I honestly don’t remember what we did for heat but I think my husband got a couple of kerosene heaters and we stayed in our bedroom and hunkered down and cooked on a camp stove

Completely get it!!! We had a rule of thumb growing up that if it was something small like a small rain storm or a small snow storm we’d stall them just to be comfy and warm but any storm or weather that could potentially cause damage to the barn (hurricane, severe ice storm, tornado) we would keep them in the field because I’d rather catch a loose horse from a fence coming down than dig one out of a barn that fell.

I like how you worry. Don’t laugh. You are a helicopter horse mama. But they are all so nice and deserve to be spoiled.

I am surprised by how localized the damage was from the storm that hit the Chicago area on Wednesday. I live in Evanston, which is on the northern border of the City of Chicago along the lakefront (Lake Michigan). We had rain and freezing rain, but it didn't seem so bad (I stayed in my apartment.). The next day, I spoke with someone who lives in Buffalo Grove, another suburb about 20 miles west of me, who lost power for about 6 hours. It may not be feasible in a rural area, but I grew up in a town in California with buried power lines. Might it be possible to have the power lines immediately around your house and barns buried underground? You wouldn't need to worry about downed power lines.

Hi Shea. When I heard about the storm coming in your area, my 1st thought was you and Kyle. Please be careful walking around. I know you take great care of your herd. I hope ya'll are not without power very long. When the boys were 10, 8 we had a ice storm and the power was out for a week. So hang in there and it will get better. Just be careful with all that ice. Don't slip anywhere. I'll be think of you and Kyle. and of course, your herd.

HOLY CATFISH!😳 you guys got hammered! I absolutely HATE ice storms, don't mind the snow but not a fan of ice. So thankful your home and barn wasn't damaged and especially thankful not so much as a hair was harmed on any of the horses. I hate you have so much clean up to do if I lived close I definitely would come help. And I think it's so nice that you even checked on your neighbors to make sure everyone was ok and had what they needed. That was so thoughtful and kind. You know what is best for your horses and what their needs are and I know without a doubt they are in the best of hands with you. So glad it warmed up and melted all that crappy mess! Couldn't go over the bridge by my house to get to work. The lake we live on had 9 to 10 ft waves , makeing everything icy. So glad you and all the animals are ok

Hey there ! Mid Michigan here up just above Oakland into Lapeer county , yes what crazy weather a mix of basically everything at once ! I have a Willow tree that this Winter has really done a number on it the Maples and Spruce trees are kept well trimmed and did well but worrying about that dog gone wind from totally the opposite direction was scary ! And wow WOWWW what wind !The electric to the barn is under ground and Our electric stayed on at the house ,Blessedly! And it was quite a trip just down a slope to the barn to feed my mares (2) ,it was the boot scootin' boogie all the way down ! And climbing and cutting that 11/2 inch ice snow ice block back with a flat backed shovel ,so it would be roughed up enough to kind of have a dig in spot . Im 67 and this is one of the strangest winter with all at onced like that thunder ice,sleet,rain YIKES. By the way, I'm so sorry about your cat we have barn and in,out cats (7),its never easy losing an animal . Take it easy and I love to see your labors oi f love and works in progress all the time ! I'm relatively new to your channel. Been thinking of all my horse friends up north. I'm about an hour north of Columbus Ohio and luckily it missed us. So sorry about your kitty. Nothing beats a good barn cat.

Same same same!! I’m in Illinois and we had the same thing as yours but some of our neighbors trees fell of there cars!🤯 but our power didn’t go out

Wow! You're right about the icy hot mess 😱. You and Kyle will be busy this weekend. Sorry you have to deal with all of that plus Pepe's loss. Glad it wasn't worse! It's hard to decide what to do before storms hit, but a decision needs made nonetheless. Your horses did great! (Horse owners here in FL leave their horses out in the pastures during hurricane warnings, those that don't have ways/means to evacuate w/them. Scary.) Have to add watching Mushu's and Buzz' noses peeking thru their stall bars was adorable. Glad to see Belle getting acclimated and hearing Bagheera's good news. Hope the weather gives you some relief in the coming days and things get back to normal for you all. Please take care of yourselves. 😊

I'm also concerned about horse hooves standing for long periods in wet and/or mud. You probably know there is a hoof rot issue to watch out for. Periods of staying dry will help. The outside horses have covered enclosures which I presume aren't as muddy, and you bring them inside on a rotating basis where the footing is dry. You know your horses and what to watch out for, and I'm rooting for you and them to remain healthy. Don't forget to take care of yourself, too, and of course, your very helpful helper, Kyle. He is such a gem!

About 12 years ago in N.E.ok we had a huge ice snow storm. Huge trees taken down. 3 trees across our drive. Patches to our animals was over knee deep on me. No power for 15 days, record temp of minus degrees. Had to do checks on goats due to kid, every 2 hours day and night. It was a real mess, even had baby goats in a crate in the house. Ice so thick even a big backhoe couldn't dig out our truck. We couldn't get a vehicle out of the drive for 2 weeks.

Oh no hope the horses, animals and humans are all ok good luck with sorting it up 😊

I know it's very sad we just Went through this very thing Here in TX ! This happen in early Feb to us ,and the damage from the storm Is still being picked up I called a tree trimmer And they are so over whelmed Be cause of the tree damage they could not schedule me until March 16th . ! I was driving through NE Indiana the night of the ice storm trying to get home from an out of state work assignment. Man was it bad just a little south of where you are. I can only imagine how much ice you had. Glad everyone is safe and again so sorry to hear about Pepe.

Yuck… we just 18” of snow in WI, but I would take that any day over ice! You made the best decisions you could given the circumstances, and what was best for your horses. They seemed perfectly content and not stressed, so I think you made the right call! All they care about is food, water and shelter lol. I’m so sorry about Pepe… what a rough day you had! 😢

I have experienced many ice storms if you want to preserve the cherry picked trees, because you so many trees, take the tallest stick or broom stand carefully on a ladder to hit the ice branches to remove the limbs it will protect the trees from falling in high winds. All the very best hopefully you will have minimal damage ❤

Kyle should’ve left a 8ft. trunk of that leaning tree and had a chainsaw carver come and make a animal or wood spirit from it. Noticed you have nice flat ground which can make for wind to travel with force a long ways. I experienced two ice storms last year with grove tree damage and three ice storms this year. I put in a second tree grove to cut some damage down last summer which will take 10 to 20 yrs. to get good results but it’s a try. It should protect what’s around the yard and buildings, love those two black matching horses at the fence line.

The added weight of the ice on trees and power lines is enough to bring them down. My son in Southwestern WI got 1/2” of ice. I got 18” of snow in West Central WI. I’m glad you’re safe and prepared. Good luck ❤. How can you resist breaking all those icicles?? 😂 I’d be running, maybe not, knocking them all off the fences.

So glad everyone is safe. My pasture here in Dryden Michigan is solid ice and had to leave the horses in the barn so not to risk slipping..Hoping it warms up a bit to melt some of the ice so they can go back outside. Stay safe!

So sorry you had to put Pepe down! The weather has been crazy this year. We've had super cold, snowy and icy weather here in southern Washington State too. they say not since 1945 have we had this much snow, but Ice is the worst! Glad all the animals are good. Stay Safe and Warm!

I'm so sorry you guys have been through all this! I am so sorry for your loss not easy having to say goodbye to our fur children. Sending healing vibes and the Ice storm goes away!

My family doesn't have are power back yet. We do have a generator tho. A quarter of are willow tree broke and more. Atleast we have more wood for are fireplace. We were running low on wood. When my dad drove into town there were whole branches and trees blocking the road. Good thing my brother went with him to help. Happy you and the animals are alright!

Oh my… glad you, Kyle and the horses are okay! We had this storm down in Utah, I think it’s going around the entire United States. It wasn’t as bad as it was there! It’s was just a huge snow storm, I mean I was in saint George all week pretty much, we were trying to get there before my great grandpa passed away, so I didn’t see what was happening in Layton but, I’m just glad you guys are okay!❤❤❤✨❤️✨ I’m sorry about Pepe by the way! For the future, you should probably get an arborist out to trim back the tree branches that touch the power line.

We had an ice storm in Arkansas last month and the ground was completely slicked over with ice. I still have tree limbs down in my yard from it I am a widow and live alone so I need some help with those things. I have to sorrell Mares, but they are good

I also love the Northern pink magnolias, but they are not the hardiest-I wouldn’t have thought you could grow them in zone 4!

I live in KY and if I hear 12" of snow in the forecast I don't even blink. But if I hear 1/2" ice predicted I am TERRIFIED. Ice storms are truly, truly horrible. Snow can be fun and nice! Ice storms are NEVER fun or nice. Never. It's good you didn't lose any fencing (I'm assuming!)! The trees here like to fall over on fences and houses during ice storms. :(

Ugh...I worked outside in all that in the 80s and 90s. Really do not miss it. Especially the MUD! I feel for you cleaning all that yard
