Horrible Vibration FIXED! New Clutch, Flywheel, A Weight Check And More For My 1971 Dodge Demon

In this video: Mopar A833 four speed manual transmission removal tips; Mopar 360 balance weight issues and discussion; small block Mopar flywheel differences; clutch replacement tips for your classic Mopar; and more.
I know this will come as a shock, but this project - like all others I undertake - snowballed into more than I bargained for. It turns out that the random used clutch that I had installed, which to this point has performed admirably, was barely hanging on by a thread. So on today's episode, we deal with that, the balance issue I went in to fix, new U-joints, and more. And while we're here, I'd really like to know... what's this thing weigh? Let's find out.

Arthur Brown tidbits - during an early appearance at the Windsor Festival in 1967, he wore a colander on his head soaked in methanol. The fuel poured over his head by accident caught fire; a bystander doused the flames by pouring beer on Brown's head, preventing any serious injury. On occasion he also stripped naked while performing, most notably at the Palermo Pop 70 Festival in Sicily, Italy, July 1970, where he was arrested and deported.

What do you mean Chill, If you took out the grille lose the bumper put in a lithium battery lose the over flow, windshield washer tank and wiper motor you could trim it up by 17.8763748 repeating pounds and totally kick Uncle Tony's boney behind. I love changing clutches in my Mopars so much....that I just paid some other hack, errr I mean "mechanic" to do it in my GTX this time. Of course, that meant it wasn't done to my satisfaction, but at least I didn't have to worry the wife with tales of 18-splines resting on my chest under a car (no lift here, boss). I'm getting too old for that shiyat.... Yes, I loved the Centerforce I had a few years back, except for the "floppy" clutch pedal that results from removing the over-center spring. Never could resolve that part, so back out it came. Good times though, watching *you* wrestle the whole mess this time Jamie, so thanks. 🙂 - Ed on the Ridge

The U-joint reminds me of a time long ago in a far away land when I put in a new U-joint in my 69 Fury and forgot to install the clips (don't ask why I forgot, let's just say my brain wasn't fully functional). I drove about 3 miles and the driveshaft decided it wanted to fly away. I can honestly say I have never forgotten clips since then.

I've run driveshaft safety loops on all of my street racers. I remember watching driveshafts being thrown when I was growing up. With hydraulic lifters, motor oils heavier than 10W30 will reduce the RPM when lifter pump up occurs. I do remember the high bleed lifters, like Rhoads lifters, used to recommend using 20W50 oil though. I've switched to a smaller battery to save front end weight before. Accel used to make special super small batteries, but the cheaper way was when AC Declo came out with side terminal batteries, they were lighter than top post batteries of the same capacity. Back in the 1970's there might have been 20 pounds or more difference. These days, side terminal batteries are about 10 pounds (9-11lbs) lighter than comparable top post batteries. That's still a weight savings and a weight savings off of the front. There are small AGM batteries these days that the speed shops sell. I have taken front bumpers to a fabrication shop to put a series of large, perfectly round holes through the front of them. Fiberglass bumpers would have worked, but back then, there weren't the fake, shiny chrome coatings you could put on fiberglass, that are available today. The best we had was metallic silver paint and the fiberglass bumpers never looked straight. Some guys would just leave the front bumper off, but I wanted something there.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 2 месяца назад
I run 20w50 high zinc because it’s all the local guys have in the budget line anymore. I would have preferred thinner. However, while I am running hydraulic lifters, I use adjustable arms that are lashed at zero, removing the lifters’ ability to pump up and create valve float. My move would be to buy a group 51 Honda battery. They’re smaller and lighter. But the fact remains that I am not that concerned with shedding every pound - and I think I’ve spent enough money this week…

I keep hearing different things about AMD bumpers, mainly about they're thinner and lighter than factory or that they're thinner but same weight as factory, or it varies car to car or when you bought it, but maybe you already cut some weight off the front with an aftermarket bumper... It's a good idea to check the runout of the clutch disk. Just install on the transmission input shaft with transmission in neutral and give it a spin. Not being picky but when you push the clutch pedal down, you are engageing the clutch.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 2 месяца назад
I have to disagree. Accurate and consistent terminology is importance for conceptualizing how systems function. Disengaged = the clutch is not driving the input of the transmission. Engaged = the clutch is driving the input. Is your AC clutch engaged when it is not spinning the pump’s internals? No - it is engaged when the clutch is driving the pump. Is your PTO engaged when it is not driving accessories? No, the opposite. I hope that makes sense.

The demon should comfortably make 425hp. Souped up the 340 could do that so the 360 should be even a little better.

400 horses is not challenging from a 360. Valve size and compression ratio are likely holding this one back, but there is a lot of good stuff in it. I would be interested to know what it’s making just for science. I’m not expecting bragging rights.

I'm curious how you'd compare the 340 to the 360 you put in. I just finished up a Magnum swap into my 67 Dart with reasonable cam, air gap, EQ ported heads etc and haven't driven it yet as I'm swapping in an 8 3/4 so that I don't grenade the 7 1/4.

You can drive it, you just can’t DRIVE it. Haha. We 360 swapped a ‘73 Swinger and the 7 1/4 lived for years. We were not kind to it either, but it had small tires and an open diff. Zero traction. Anyway, as far as comparison, my experiences with the 340 were kind of weird. It always had a hesitation and never quite did what I expected it to do. It made good power and was more willing to sing past 6,000 RPM. The 360 revs smoothly and is making a lot better power down low, but runs out of poop earlier. I picked up several miles an hour in the 1/8th mile with the engine change, so that tells me what I need to know - but when I get my issues with the 340 figured out and put it back in eventually, I know it will be awesome.

ATF would be way too thin for an 833. You'll cook it, especially if you're going to be hard on it. If you want thinner for quicker shifts, and only quick blasts down the quarter mile.... I'd suggest motor oil, 10-40 would be ideal.... might-could run 10-30 but give it time to cool off. ATF would be big No-No in an 833. "Don't become a mechanic". Amen, buddy. Most thankless job I ever had. College educated; built show-winner cars; restored cars for fun and helped out so many people I'm getting into heaven without a doubt. Still got treated like garbage. Customer was ALWAYS 1000x smarter than me. Nuts to that. Now I just work on my stuff, and my friends' stuff. Not as much money; but much less stress and they are thankful when I fix things for next to nothing.

Brother, ATF was the factory fluid in the A833. That may not have been for all years, but it certainly was for many.

@@DeadDodgeGarage Maybe we should ask Uncle Tony? ATF was only recommended for very cold climates. And even then, I think one TSM states "If gear-rattle persists, switch to oil".

If you just installed a valley pan intake gasket & had to pull the intake back off, would you reuse the pan gasket? Asking for a friend-

On a big block, I’ll reuse the valley pan all day long unless it got bent pulling the intake.
