The Projectile Shell Production Process at the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant
The production process of projectile shells at the Scranton Army Ammunition Plant involves several critical stages, starting with the use of an automated lift. This lift transfers 20-foot-long steel bars to a conveyor, where they are brought to a billet saw. The saw cuts these steel bars into 15-inch billets weighing around 115 pounds. This step marks the beginning of the projectile shell manufacturing process, which will go through several more stages.
After cutting, the billets are then transferred to a conveyor that takes them to the next step in the production process. Here, a phosphate system cleans the projectiles and chemically grows a protective phosphate layer on the projectile's surface. This process is essential to protect the material from corrosion and prepare it for subsequent stages in the production process.
Next, the phosphate-coated billets are sent via a conveyor belt to three separate forming machines. The first machine performs an initial pressing on the billets, while the second machine expands them, and the third machine draws the metal out to a final length of about 30 inches. This process is conducted at approximately 1800 degrees Fahrenheit, allowing the billets to be properly forged.
