Grammy Award-winning singer Alanis Morissette is sharing her nearly decade-long experience with postpartum depression. In an essay on her website, the 45-year-old revealed she's dealing with the condition for a third time. After I had my first child at 17, I had horrible visions, I guess we're calling them invasive thoughts, now. An apt descriptor, because I just couldn't make them stop. I would see myself throwing my infant out of a second story window, and I was afraid to be alone with her because of it. But I was three states away from my family or any kind of emotional support, so my depression and anxiety just got worse. My heart goes out to all those who go through anything like that. Even 25 years later I still want to cry from the memories and guilt of even thinking such things. I hope you all get help. I should have.

ButterfliesR free I agree she's awesome! I'm sure you are too though? :) Sorry to hear what you went through and have been continuing to go through. It sounds so so tough... I don't know if this can be of any help...but just in case your doctors haven't shared this with you before now (many don't...and some dont because it's not their area of interest but I believe they all have an ethical care of duty to take interest in it, given that they are the people prescribing....) : "Antidepressants" have never been trialled for anything beyond quite short to mid term use. There is no evidence scientifically to say that they're safe or genuinely effective long-term (beyond a year or so), however the drugs companies profit a heck of a lot - and so do the prescribers - so they just don't stop prescribing and so so rarely suggest anything else or ask any lifestyley questions that may be of relevance and help. The history of the DSM manual is well worth looking into... James Davies has written candidly about it in his bestselling book "Cracked", as has Paula J Caplan (a former US psychiatrist who now informs and specialises in "Post Natal Depression" as a very distressing but natural and healable outcome of childbirth and parenthood...not a disease to be fixed.) Also, there have been studies done that have shown ironically, the longer term uses of anti "depressants" and anti "psychotics" can often create the very difficulties ("depression" and "psychosis") that they're trying to resolve. I have a load of resources if of interest/help, ie some handy websites/books/podcasts. Not sure if any of this will be of help to you or others - but just in case. Take good care, and good luck to you on your journey - I hope you reach wherever you'd like to be at :)x

@@OneLove-vn2yo alanis is not stable and should be kept off the air. she knew she was suicidal and susceptible to ppd before she had kids; and still she had them. if you are suicidal don´t have children. and definitely don´t keep having children if you have ppd, and have not resolved your suicidal inclinations. ...maybe she should talk about why a ¨love addict¨ with ¨attachment issues¨ felt the need to become an ***attachment*** parent of three.
@lt7587
@lt7587 4 года назад
@@sublime_death_000 I'm finding it quite uncomfortable to read so many of these sorts of comments about Alanis...to me it feels fairly judgemental. Especially that she isn't "stable" (who said she isn't? And what exactly does it mean to be "stable"?) Nobody can "know" they'll feel suicidal in the future, and also nobody can "know" they'll definitely struggle after childbirth. Anyone can have suicidal thoughts at any point in their life, and it doesn't make someone irresponsible - we can't easily control what thoughts we have and when, as most of them are automatic and can fly at us automatically (probably when we least expect it!) I'd suggest that more people than not experience suicidal thoughts at least a handful of times in their lifetime, and many many people have a suicidal thought (not necessarily suicide ideation or a suicide plan or suicide attempt) hundreds of times. It also seems so natural and normal to be finding life so bloody hard after carrying a baby for 9 months, and then childbirth afterwards - let alone the prospect of bringing up a child. Then thinking about the immense strain that parents can be in... None of these things are some kind of a medical condition even though doctors and drugs companies treat them like they are - it brings them a huge profit to do so...and there's really no provable science in it whatsoever...
@sublime_death_000
@sublime_death_000 4 года назад
@@lt7587 what is your point? my perspective is this: im glad you empathize with, alanis. nonetheless, it is risky to have a kid if you are, suicidal. and especially so, if you know (another) pregnancy, could lead to suicidal ideation, and a greater risk factor, given a ppd, diagnosis, in the past.
@lt7587
@lt7587 4 года назад
@@sublime_death_000 what do you mean by a previous "PPD diagnosis"? It's as accurate as the weather forecast and based entirely on arbitrary guesswork, not science. She's a loving mum who gives a damn about herself and others, I don't want to shame someone for having the thoughts and feelings they have. There are a whole host parents out there who have never been labelled "PPD" and may or may not have suicidal thougts, yet they struggle to provide a safe and consistent home for their children. That isn't uncommon unfortunately, far from it. It's not Alanis' children I'm worried for...She has self -awareness and awareness of other, and to me that more than counts for something.

Well, isn't it funny how universe works. My ex suffers from depression, the sweetest man I have met so far broke up with me because he can't cope with a relationship right now and needs to get his life back on track and he doesn't want to hurt me or pull me into his moods... He wants to be with me, he just can't. All the things that come alongside depression. :( I am healing now, feeling better after the break up, trying to understand him, his illness, his actions and feelings and states he's in and be there for him as a friend for now. At one point, I started exploring music for healing reasons. Among other artist, Alanis came up. And now I stumbled upon this video. My wife has had extremely bad post partum the past 2 months. I can not describe how much it affects all of us, seeking help right away is so important. About 2 or 3 months after the baby she started showing signs of post partum and we got help right away. Then when our son was about 8 or 9 months old, she didn’t tell me she’d stopped taking the medication and didn’t tell her doctor either. I found that out about 2 weeks ago, it has been a roller coaster of emotions. A few times it has gotten very dark and I started being concerned for our son. This stuff is no joke.

The stopping of this kind of medication can be extremely dangerous which they don’t tell you when they give it; extra support from the beginning is what the new mother needs; Like in the olden days when women supported each other very naturally and not in competition’s around the men or the job or other nonsense A child brought into this world is a very big deal; What is wrong with people that think it’s normal to go off and leave a little one so early in their development

Ppd is so underrated and it needs to be given so much more attention from both physicians side, to the new moms and the people around them. It can do a lot of damage and many couples split when the babies come into their lives because we don’t know how to deal with it. I have dealt with PPD for almost 2 years after my first born and it was horrible! I didn’t get the help I needed even though I was paying a lot on my insurance at that time. The second time around it was much better, night and day difference. I am, however, very saddened that this issues is so overlooked by physicians and just society in general. Things must change, people must come out and speak about it.

I am having depression /anxiety after taking in my niece’s infant (she couldn’t take care of him). He’s the best, cutest baby ever, but I wasn’t planning on having a baby around (my husband and I are both 45 and have had no children). We were so very happy, and I loved our life. My husband loves the baby and wants to keep him. I think he’s cute and everything, but I just miss my old life and see no way out of this. I can’t take him away from my husband, since he’s in love with him, but I don’t want a child. We had been married for one month when we got the call to go and pick up this baby. I had just moved into my husband’s house, and we had plans for our future that did not involve a baby. Now I am just numb and sad and can’t think straight. I don’t even leave the house. Nothing is fun. I have little interest in the baby, but I have to take care of him all day. My husband comes home and is a good dad, but his life is basically unchanged, while mine is totally upside-down. I’m so resentful and now regret even getting married. I’ll probably just move back into my house in another state and get my old job back. Problem is that he can’t keep the baby by himself. He needs me to take care of him while he works...but I don’t want this life.

Postpartum depression and anxiety is SOOOOO difficult. I know exactly how it is as I went through it for nearly a year. 1-3 hours of sleep for a year (unless my ex stayed home), agoraphobia for a year, choking phobia which caused me to only eat one protein shake a day for 3-4 months and lose 18lbs in 13 days, major issues with my bowels and GERD, I would pace back and forth for hours, heart speeding non-stop all day, so much more along with an emotionally abusive guy. My kid will be four this year and although I still have anxiety and depression (was diagnosed before PPD), I'm so much better. I'm not just barely hanging onto survival anymore, I go out, I have an intelligent and wonderful girl, and have a permanent restraining order against my ex. Anybody who is dealing with PPD or PPA, you are NOT alone with this.

I don’t think I experienced postpartum depression, but I can definitely relate to a lot of what she described here. We had a homebirth, which I’m grateful for. But as a result, I felt pretty alone, in terms of figuring out how to care for my first born. In addition to the sleep depravation and the weeks of lower body pain, I felt isolated in my room, not being able to move around or do much of anything. It’s worth noting that I’m very much a homebody, so it surprised me to feel isolated at home. After the second or third day, I started crying a lot, just out of tiredness, pain, and isolation, even though my husband was a trooper and did so much for both me and baby. The newborn period is insanely difficult.

What about Diet especially Veganism possibly being the cause of certain issues especially during/after Pregnancy. That needs to be discussed openly without being so quickly dismissed cause questioning Veganism nowadays seems like Blasphemy in some circles.

@@dandrem.4074 War and Work. There's 2 Shall I continue? All the deadliest, most dangerous, and hard work has been historically, the job of men. Who protects the women and children? Mostly men. Clearly you don't know how dangerous and stressful that can be. With other men it's always a competition and you always have to be on guard and ready to fight at the drop of a hat. That's just how it is as a man. Who has faced the horrors of war time and time again? Bled, died, had their limbs blown off etc. Again, almost exclusively men. Who toiled away in the hot, poisonous mines getting black lung mining all the resources you rely upon? Who chopped down the vast forests and carved out modern civilizations for you? Who dynamited and hand carved out mountains to carve out roads everywhere for you? Who removed all the boulders and plowed the fields to make them farmable? Who stood on steel beams hundreds of feet off the ground with no safety harness to catch you if you fell to build the skyscrapers for you? Men. Women would have nothing without us and we would be nothing without you. I'm not saying women have it easy but for you to say men do is absolutely insane and proof you have very little understanding of this world and what we go through.

@@cronicjointpain1 ok let me mellow you out for a minute. Though it is true that men and women need one another, let me deflate your ego a little. #1. Women are actually capable of taking care of themselves and their offspring. Its a proven fact among single mothers...Probably better than a man. Its literally proven not just amongst humans and the entire animal kingdom. #2. Who are the starter of all wars? Not one woman has ever started or been the cause of any war or weapon of mass destruction. Men... so these wars that you talk about men serve and fight in is not just for women and children. Its for you too, your brethren start them. So don't blame mens natural ability to destroy a justification of how hard life is. #3. Those fields, which i am sure you never tilled, were not just for the women. They were for you too. So regardless if a woman were present, men still would have toiled...sex was just your motivation. Finally, my initial statement was not to spark your ego. Alanis' condition is a strictly personal matter and not one that a man would understand or have to deal with because well men can't have babies... so they typically can't understand how a women would feel depressed. Thats what I meant. Not to use a platform for you to point out how the men folk are such marvels to women. Don't get so full of yourself. Women have proven that they can handle life just as well as men.

I love Alanis and respect her so much, but her wonderful smile during the discussion of these terrible traumas doesn't "cure" anything, but makes it worse and neutralizes the actual feeling she is describing. I can't believe this is helpful for her or anyone else. But I applaud her for speaking out... very important discussion we all need.

Alanis is awesome. And that's no thanks at all to the "professional" who told her "it won't get any better" and then put her on some prescribed drugs. There is zero evidence to say that anyone "needs" those drugs, let alone long term. Giving birth and having children isn't easy - can't be underestimated..but the multiple challenges from having children, as stressful as it could often be, aren't some sort of disease to medicate. When a "professional" says something can't get better, unfortunately it makes it sound very believable...I'm pretty sure they won't have been able to present Alanis any genuine medical evidence for their predictions...None exist. But three things that Are definite: doctors who medicalise human experiences like Alanis's bring much financial gain both to the medical profession And, mainly to Big Pharma..Secondly, "antidepressants" have never been given clinical trials that last more than a few weeks/months at most, so there is no evidence to say they are safe or effective in long term use (if anything though, there's plenty of anecdotal evidence to say the opposite - and there's much damage being done, permanently at times, to plenty of people who take them long term and/or withdraw from them too quickly)...Thirdly (then I'm done, I promise!): studies have shown that ironically "antidepressants" taken longer term tend to either perpetuate or even in some people Cause feelings of depression including worsening suicidal thoughts... And long term use of "antipsychotics" have been shown to cause or worsen states of "psychosis" (Isn't it Ironic..? Yeah I really do think..")

The problem we have with the world today is no one has any backbone. We have a condition for every unpleasant feeling someone has. Children are hard work. But they are also the greatest blessing in the world. I understand that some people have Chemical imbalances but I believe we over diagnose these conditions.

About the 'white-knuckling' through it I think it is an un-articulated fear of not having a trustworthy person to open up to...or a sense of inequality in some that the baby is more valued than the mother and an unrealistic expectation of what a mother's role is and that we cannot/won't live up to it.

Any people out there who might be new parents, let go of the guilt. You are doing just fine. The lack of sleep, the adjustment, the responsibility is dizzying. No one does it better than you are doing right now and although it feels as though you are winging it, you are doing absolutely fine. - me - Dad to 7 year old twins, physically disabled and prone to lots of self doubt due to the pain my spine causes.

Alanis you have gotten my even more beautiful as you've aged!!! So blessed! Beautiful children! I was so young when I had my first child. Didn't even know what post partom depression was. Had no support from anyone. Not even my Dr. It was horrible. So glad to hear women talk about it and let others know it's not something to be ashamed of. That's how I was made to feel. My own mom was the worst. Thank you Alanis! And God Bless you!!!
