Horror details emerge of surfer mauled by shark in South Australia

Bystanders near a shark attack in South Australia on Monday have described what happened to the missing surfer involved.
The 55-year-old victim is presumed dead after he was attacked while surfing with friends near Streaky Bay on Monday morning.
Witnesses say a 4.5-metre-long great white shark dragged the surfer underwater, before emerging with the man's body in its mouth.
The search for the man ended on Wednesday after parts of his board and wetsuit were found.
Search and rescue crews have resumed looking for his body.

that whole stretch of coast from Pt Lincoln to Streak bay is sketchy as, never understood why anyone would go in the water anywhere along there. RIP old mate.

I've been beaching fishing the coast from Pt Lincoln to Ceduna for 30 years. Beats me why I see 100s of surfers out there in Shark Alley.

An ex partner of mine was a diver on the tuna farms in Port Lincoln, he came face to face with a few great whites. I remember we went camping in Ceduna one year and all I wanted to do was go for a swim, but, the water was colder than I expected. I didn’t go past my knees in the end. A couple of weeks later a mate of his was killed around that area by a shark. I feel sorry for the surfers family and friends. Unfortunately he took a risk that many of us wouldn’t.

I don't have any sympathy for people putting themselves at risk. "I was swimming in the ocean and got attacked by a shark"... gee what are the chances of that happening? Pretty bloody good actually, that's where the sharks live. 😅

Applying the same logic as you have used would you still travel in a car? Statistically you are at far greater risk but everyone puts that aside.

Recently I rushed to inform a man and his young son who was entering the water at my local beach the alarm that was screaming was the shark alarm and it was best to wait for the all clear....... He took his son in anyway.

Look, its the price you pay when you go into the waters. Here on the west coast from Ceduna to port LincolnSouth Australia. Are shark infested waters If you think you only see one great white, there's about 5 to 10, you don't see.

exactly, and that is the case anywhere.... you see one or two, it doesnt mean there are only two of them, they are merely representatives of a much larger unseen population.... even when you see them in what is not typically thought of as their habitat, like the mid Atlantic US east coast...

I went salmon fishing there once, most of these were only half a salmon by the time i got them in. I wouldnt surf there ever, there are loads of sharks, if you surf there you know the risks. The risk is getting mauled to death by a shark, or just bitten and bleed to death, or lose a foot or leg and then get mauled, or get half mauled then lose a leg then bleed to death, or just lose a leg, and still bleed to death, maybe you will survive, but not very likely. Did he have shark repellent on?

Would likely have helped very little. May help against curious sharks, but these big ones often come in quite fast, and whatever device or repellent you put on is not going to affect any shark over ~8 to 10 feet (3 meters). You would need to carry around car batteries to produce anything even remotely able to affect big bulls, tigers and whites!

That is an ignorant, uninformed opinion. MILLIONS of sharks are killed every year, so clearly having fewer sharks (which is why they are being protected - their numbers are LOW) is not the issue. Do some research.

Actually that's not true. Statistically we had only 4 fatal shark attacks(2023) which were actually half the fatalities from 2020. It's not rising.

Seems like the number of shark attacks on humans have increased since cage dives with chumming/burly/food bags attached may be causing the sharks to have an association of humans with food. Basic animal psychology. Some countries/states have banned cage diving for good reason. Rip ya little shredder. 😢

Australia only had 4 fatal shark attacks last year. A few years back it was double. Australia was the first place for shark cage diving in the 1970s it's not anything new.
