“Standing Woman” is a dystopian drama with flourishes of body horror that depicts a near future where an authoritarian government turns those it deems to be criminals into trees as part of an insidious environmental campaign.
Under this green dictatorship, a propaganda filmmaker wrestling with the recent ‘planting’ of his wife for making seditious comments, embarks on an emotional journey to say a final goodbye.
Featuring incredible depictions of a populace being slowly vegetised by a production team who have worked on the likes of Censor, Doctor Who, and Peaky Blinders, the vision presented in "Standing Woman" is of a world that has edged into eco-fascism.

Does this have any correlation to do with what happened in the Soviet Union, with the gulag? Or was it influenced by people using drugs? Either way, I really appreciated this short. The film has me in deep thought.

It wasn't influenced specifically by any drugs crisis (though users would certainly find themselves targeted), but we definitely considered a lot of different extreme imprisonments with this one being devised by the government to present one that could seem palatable to the population but is just as inhumane as something like the gulag.

Ok the puppy really hurt me hard... Doing that to people is already horrendous, but... A doggo ? A poor little pup ? Unable to comprehend what happened to him... It made me shiver and so angry, and emotionally broken... The fear that haunts me is that I believe that we may very well heading to such horrible future if we don't rise up now.

That was disturbing and very dark, but so unique...this short movie will last a long time in my mind! Edit: I watched it for a second time, it was different, bc this time i knew what happend, but it was the same dark and disturbing story. To be honest, it's brilliant, the idea and the making, the music and dialoges, what a great work!!! Please keep giong to work at such unique ideas, this little movie transport so much emotions and thoughts, you did a great job with this!!!

Kind of like symbolic to people irl getting silenced by people in power. They cannot do anything. The people turned to trees here which just stand and can’t talk or move symbolises that

This was both beautiful and tragic. The love seen is what we long for and is best achieved in an environment of freedom. The horror and darkness here are the consequences of not conforming to those in charge such as a corrupt government or system. Freedom is cherished but so easily taken away. This breeds helplessness and rule by fear. This short explores those themes. I love that the beauty of nature contrasts with what is going on in this short. These are my thoughts and opinions. I enjoyed this. Thanks and great work to Tony Hipwell, the cast, and crew. This one makes you think and that is powerful and representative of freedom. Peace. Peace.

Thanks! My production designer built a full scale tree sculpture made from fibreglass based on the actress's dimensions and moulds from cherry blossom trees.
