Beautiful job on the scratcher! I can't wait to get to the forge and make one (some). Have a lot of rider friends who would love to have one. A suggestion...when finalizing the forks, instead of working so hard to bend the longest one to match the other lengths, just make all the same bend, then file down the tip of the longest to match the others. I didn't see you smooth the tips, but it would be good to do so in order not to snag any fabric (or skin!!).

My blacksmithing mentor, Alan Ball (sadly deceased from MND), used to make dragons heads a bit like that, except he started with square stock and made them 3D, with two ears, nostrils and eyes. Just used a round punch for the nostrils. I like the speed of yours, and they look great. Thanks.

Itchy backs....old mans gremlin. A friend commented on this. Last few years (I'm 70 now) I've had the same. Even saw Bernie Ecclestone scratching his back. So no cure. Everyone needs one (grin) make your fortune/pension Gary.

45 here (i know, spring chicken) but the last couple of years... i've been scratching to draw blood and loving it lol.. Dry skin on my back doesn't help but age sure makes it worse :)

I did one of these for my friend last year before he past away. I even made the horse head look like his favorite sports team's horse head.

Brian Brazeal is the one who set the world on fire with his horses. You did an amazing job and came up with a good place for this horse to hang his heat [hat] : Thanks for sharing this with us! Dave WinDancerKnives

I knew that someone would beat me to it. Brian, indeed, did make a fine horse head that many have either learned to make at his hand or have simply imitated. I think, at one point, I have seen him make a 3D horse head. Was just fabulous!

That is a significant piece of steel, just to scratch one's back :O Maybe there is some serious itch to work on though :P

Gary I can't believe it, but I have never made a horse head either (25 years shoeing). I know what I'm doing on Sunday. Cheers

Thank you Thechimpmonk2008. I'm sure it will take a few more times than Gary. if you haven't yet you should take a look at the many years of projects Gary has banged out in his forge. I got a bunch of brownie points from my wife when I copied his forged heart present.

Alright Gary, just wanted to say thanks for being an inspiration. Have you heard of the Facebook page called forging it forward? I think it may be of interest. Cheers
@garyhuston
@garyhuston 6 лет назад
Phil Martin no, never heard of it as I don’t do Facebook. Probably American though, most stuff is and not much use to me!
@philmartin6357
@philmartin6357 6 лет назад
Yeah it is American mate, well it was started by American youtubers but there's a few Europeans on there as well. The premise is helping out the beginner or less fortunate blacksmith. By making tools etc and getting them to that person. I'm not really doing the movement justice to be honest. If the fancy takes you, look up forging it forward on RU-vid a few of the admins have videos about it.

I am sorry if this is a silly question... all the bits of metal that come off when hammering, can you save and re-use later on other peojects?
@garyhuston
@garyhuston 6 лет назад
No, it’s the oxidized rubbish caused by the heating. Only use is to put around your roses!

there's a 20? year old tutorial on Anvilfire for the same horse head, that may be the common origin of the shape www.anvilfire.com/iForge/tutor/seahorse/top_index.htm
