Years ago, when I had horses, my farrier took very little off the frog. He said too many farriers trim the frog down so far that it does not touch the ground when the horse puts his weight on that foot. The frog is what pumps blood into the hoof keeping it healthy and supple. This horse will suffer from the very little frog he has left and the hooves will not be healthy. And yes I had a good farrier. He also worked on the stable full of hunters and jumpers owned by August Busch in St. Louis. I wonder if this guy is self taught, like a lot of farriers these days. I don't think a good farrier school would teach them to pare away the frog so much.

Es kommt auf das Pferd an. Meiner mag es nicht, wenn Strahl im Stand Kontakt zum Boden hat. Deshalb wird er bei meinem einigermaßen gekürzt. Im Schritt wenn der Huf sich weitet, hat der Strahl Kontakt zum Boden und trägt mit. Hat der Strahl hingegen schon im Stand Kontakt mit dem Boden, läuft er nicht. Er sagt es dem Hufbearbeiter, indem er den Huf nicht belastet und den anderen Huf nicht gibt. Erst wenn der Strahl so gekürzt wird, wie das Pferd es verträgt, ist er zufrieden und gibt dann auch den anderen Huf. Man sollte auf sein Pferd hören.

I've subscribed liked, saved and shared your video. I've only seen a horse 3 times in my life. I wish I could have horses. Ahh maybe in another life. I love watching your videos. It's not often the sound of the farriers breathe and efforts are recorded. I thought it must be easy to trim the horses but now I can hear the efforts you are putting into the job, I realise it must be very demanding but rewarding job.

I always cring when the blacksmith starts trimming bad the frog. I guess because it's so soft I always wonder how the blacksmith knows how much to trim. Years ago, during my horse daysv, we had a blacksmith that was pure poetry in motion to watch. When trimming day came he always had an audience whether some of the people had a horse due for a trim or not. He was that good.

The first guy doesn’t know what he’s doing. He cut the frog and the sole way too deep. That, unfortunately, Horace will be in pain until he gets some depth of sole back.
