So much easier to learn from trainers who are actually utilizing their skills on horses that need correction and are not already trained. It really shows the onlookers better expectations and helps with problem solving skills. Thank you!

Great training video! I'm going to definitely try this tomorrow. Just adopted a 17h OTTB that has great ground manners, but when he is lunged is so quick to turn and get away and then we both get frustrated. It's so obvious now that starting on a shorter line might help us both get on track and get forward motion. Great tips! I look forward to more good videos!

Nice work, you seems to know how to use body language because she give some good responses, but sometimes, to my mind you put a little too much pressure at the biginning, maybe start by asking more gently and increase pressure only if she don"t listen.

Nice, horsemen and women who listen to each other and then make their own opinion often improve themselves more quickly than those who only trust their own methods. That's why I like you, because you listen to other people if they give some valid arguments.

I've found a couple "buck you's" is fairly normal when first going into a lope on the lunge, a previous mare I had as well as my gelding will throw a couple initially but then they are good for the remainder of the session. :'D

Hi Mike, very interesting and helpful video, thank you. I have searched everywhere for a video about these problems. My now senior Arabian mare was started (by someone else) in a round pen. Though I asked he did not desensitize her, teach her to stand at mount block, etc. We started her as a distance horse and I have trail ridden her many times. Because the mare does not know to collect, do a slow jog trot, etc, I have gone back to groundwork basics. I do not have a round pen where I board. I am having some issues, like in this video. My mare avoids flexing left right at the start and continues to move her hind quarters away unless we work against a wall. I am not sure where that came from but is her avoidance response so need to fix it. Lunging on her off side she stops and turns into me so I did as you started in this video to get her circling. Part of my problem is I now wear braces and I cannot post to ride or move as much or as fast as before so my mare needs to do that work. I would enjoy just doing ground work and horse in hand but first we need to get into and through the basics. What of your lessons do you recommend I start with? Are you available for Q&A once in your program? Do you also get into work in hand later or can you recommend any other program? Thank you very much.

Hi Yael! Have you had your horse checked through by a chiropractor?! If my horse, no matter what age, was showing these symptoms, I would, definitely, suspect some sort of physical issues. And I would, definitely, not sit on her back, before I had had this, possible issue solved! It might even be her tooth tips, that need to be rasped... Just some thoughts to take in consideration... All the best, to you both!🤠

Sweetheart lunges fine with or without a line unless I pick up a lunge whip even if it's held in a neutral position. He's good with my forward cue now that he's learned it, a simple arm motion. It helps that he's always eager to move.

First off guys for horses that turn and run, use a round pen until you have more control of and respect from your horse. This immediately solved the "turning to the outside" problem until the horse gets the idea of things. Being afraid of your horse is a no-no and moving away from their pressure is how you end up on the bottom of the totem pole. In a round pen, with an attached lunge line is how you should begin. If you were using a lunge whip, perhaps it was too much pressure for the space you had, and you need to downgrade to maybe just a dressage whip for the time being. Honestly, when I start a horse lunging, I don't even use a stick at all, but due to the fact that these horses have gotten over on you, I would say a dressage whip would suffice. Do a test with this dressage whip before you connect the horse to the lunge line. You are going to move your horse to the left, so have the whip in your right hand. Start just in neutral with your nose down and the whip touching the ground. THEN I want you to look up, swivel your hips so that when you stand square and look ahead, you are at a 45 degree angle behind the horse's shoulder (don't move the whip). Did your horse respond? Did they look at you (asking a question)? Start walking(looked for an answer to your pressure)? Etc? Keeping yourself at a 45 degree angle behind the horse's shoulder, I want you to now point the whip in your right hand at that shoulder but don't lift the tip off the ground. If your horse didn't walk before, is it walking now? If it already was, did it increase in speed? Then I want you to stare down that shoulder intensely and if your horse moves btw relax for a moment after to give the horse a release of pressure (but keep being at that angle). NOW, maintaining everything up to now, I want you to slowly lift the tip of the whip until it is parallel to the ground, pointing it at your horse (mind you, if you are looking at the shoulder, your arm and whip should be pointing further back on the horse but at that 45 degree angle, I don't want you immediately at the flank because this is a test to gauge the horse's sensitivity). As you are lifting the tip of the whip, I want you to gauge your horse's reaction. Is your horse moving? Did it get faster as you lifted the whip or did it only move at the end?how quickly did it respond and pick up speed? Is this horse ignoring you, or moving around? If moving, how fast? If your horse has been ignoring you this whole time, feel free to crack the whip to get the horse's attention and redo the test (but only after you have done all steps at least once). This is all to gauge the sensitivity of your horse when it comes to pressure and whether or not this is a respect issue or a fear/oversensitivity/overwhelmed by pressure issue. If your horse is overly sensitive, then be sensitive to that and apply your pressure strategically. If your horse is dead to this pressure and needs an attitude readjustment (bucking, rearing, etc), by all means, grab the lunge whip again, attach the lunge line and push that horse out, change directions, do not give to their pressure or take steps back from them, stand your ground, snap the lunge if the horse turns to kick you, making him face you instead and then change its direction -- but still be sure to relieve the horse from pressure when it does something right (so that the horse is encouraged to continue its good behavior). Add pressure as correctional and release pressure as a reward, don't overwhelm it and don't be afraid of your horse

I am so sorry you got kicked. So yes do lots of flexing, forward cue and showing respect. When you do start letting her out on the line to lunge her make sure you are out of her kicking range and then go from there. If she turns her butt to you use the forward cue firmly and really getting her working for you. mikehugheshorsetraining.vhx.tv

So that would tell you your horse needs a lot of practice going the bad way. In cases like that I will always go back to teaching the lesson with the flexing, disengaging the horses hips, the forward cue etc. When my horse is good both ways now I will go in to teaching the change of direction on the lunge line mikehugheshorsetraining.vhx.tv

I have to use her breed traits to her advantage. I found the first part very helpful to get her started moving out and then extend the line. i can practise that this am . i cant seem to get myself behind her energetically and with my body to keep forward motion. i give her the wrong message she slows down and turns to face me like she was just taught. i dont want to chase her heels with a whip so i hope the very first skill in your video works!

The horse I am trying to lunge always turns into me and usually will not respond to pressure. If he is not doing that he stands still and plants his feet and refuses to move. I also don’t have an arena so the horse is easily distracted and wants to walk home. I am thinking to have somebody lunge him while I’m on him so I can steer him away from coming towards the lunger and use leg aids to keep him going and then slowly get off of him and try it on the ground to see if he understands what I’m asking him to do. Has anyone ever tried that? Does it help the horse understand what I’m asking for? He doesn’t mean to be disobedient, he just can’t comprehend what I’m asking him to do. Please advise.
@tedthecameraman9514
@tedthecameraman9514 2 года назад
Lunging is typically used to help better your horse when you go to ride him - typically not the other way around. I’ve found one of the best ways to fix that problem is to ask someone to help you for 10 minutes a few times a week (Should only take a 2-5 sessions). Have someone walk on the outside of the horse and lead them around you while you give the horse queues while youre lunging. During the last few minutes of each session, have your helper stop holding the horse but keep walking next to them. Eventually have your friend move further away. After a few sessions your friend shouldnt have to lead the horse around you but can just guide her. If you can get your horse solid at the walk, typically once you pick up a gait it will be easier for them to stay out on a longer line. Horses are pretty smart, yours should pick up on this technique pretty quickly. Best of luck!

Good Morning, When horse do that I go back into teaching the lunging lesson in having her flex to the halter both to the right and to the left, the forward cue, having the horse do small circles at a walk around me staying flexed and then I will start giving more line making the circles bigger and then build it up into a trot. As far as the biting goes I will replace the biting with something I want the horse to do like round penning, lunging, etc. The exercise has to take work and something you want your horse to work on so you are replacing the biting with a performance lesson on the ground mikehugheshorsetraining.vhx.tv

@Marcoeful

Yes get a lunge whip that is longer for the lunging. We always stay as gentle as we can but as firm as we need to be. You horse is telling you no and we have to say yes you will lunge for me as long as he is not in pain. Now what I mean by being firm is when a horse does that to me I will hit the ground with the whip as hard as I need to. If he still does not move or kick out then I will tap him on the hind end as firm as I need to until he moves off. So give it a try and let me know how it goes for you. :)

Going to honest - i believe training a horse through your voice and not a whip is much beter - she is working because she fears your whip not because she wants to - voicing her wrongs and rights will present more quality - and build a bond
@Marcoeful
@Marcoeful 6 лет назад
You can use your voice all day long with a disrespectful horse and at the end of the day they are still going to be disrespectful. The whip is only a extension your arm not to hurt the horse in any way or manner, in no way was this mare ever scared of me or anything else
@cheyennefletcher5767
@cheyennefletcher5767 6 лет назад
Voice command only works for so long. Horses are like children if there is no follow up consequence or push for understanding they dont give a damn or dont improve and get worse. You dont let a child think b is d and go with it or let them jump on the lounge and watch them you correct them or give a consequence. Its all apart of learning.
@vickybotha1677
@vickybotha1677 6 лет назад
The horse that you are working with is far from the above mentioned. I think you are not looking at her body language only what you want to achieve. As well as Horse are not made to disrespect anything - find the underlying problem and work with it - a troubled horse needs to except and see that you are not the same as the previous RESPECT does not come from a whip - as people we know this.

No i disagree - children get worse when power is enforced and you only expect a certain act or response when needed and the rest of the time people are not bothered Like your child will jump on your coach when you are not there (guaranteed), but through COMMUNICATION - VOICING your unhappiness a layer Of understanding is already put in place NOW if you child or horse does it again you voice it stronger - and done again you whip slightly, this will provide a level of I understood - I tried again and this is her response - POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT . Now horses are much like that - Force and already damaged horse and you will only receive what needs to be given at the time, now thats not what you are looking for, you look for a well rounded horse who aims to satisfy and enjoys the process. Another thing RESPECT , COMMUNICATION, COURAGE and openness is what people should provide their horses - not just ride and jump off - you cant carry your child and just leave it when you feel so. Horses know when we come with good spirit and intentions and they know when they are being little shits :) - I bother my horse so much - if he is grumpy towards me - I sit in his stall until he shows me the respect i deserve as I portray to him he gives it back when we are in the arena !

I have a mare and whenever I go to lunge her she walks into me, as well as when I go to the side of her she moves infront of me so that I cannot get into a position to lunge her at her side. and is VERY persistent on it. Any tips?

Work on teaching her to move her shoulders, and once she gets good at it you can cue her to move her shoulders away from you while lunging. Hope that makes sense!

My gaited TWH freaks out when I try to lunge him. I can't put a training surcingle on him in fear he would injure himself with that

Start teaching him on to flex with the halter on and the forward cue to get him relaxed and then start slowly teach him how to lunge

Mike Hughes I did that, now he lunged freely without a rope. I had to work in a round pen though. My barn area was too small, pasture was definitely too big so I used my round pen. Thank you! (Justice (this horse) is a fast learner) It's been 4 days since I've tried. He freaks out in open areas but is to enclosed in small areas

By the way, I found out from his coggins that he's not even cob or TWH blood at all, he's a standardbred

There are simple ways to fix the issues with any horse. Sometimes horses will test those limits but staying consistent will go along ways

What happens if your horse pins his ears back and kicks you if you are that close and all you did is lightly tap him on the butt
@Marcoeful
@Marcoeful 7 лет назад
To begin with I am going to make sure the horse I am working with has not kicking problems and if he does I will take care of it, then I am going to have him or her soft on the lunge line that if they even think about it I will pull their nose in and have them move that hip away from me but for more info contact me at info@crib-free.com

I watched this because she kicked out… which is what our mare decided to do today after jigging all over the trails. We decided to longe her to let her know we can move her feet and once we asked for more than a walk she kicked out just like this mare. The hiccup we ran into was once she kicked out and threw her fit, she then stood like a statue and wouldn’t move an inch. She went hip cocked and droopy eyes. It was the oddest thing I’ve seen. (We use flags for lounging and not a whip stick) My thoughts are “maybe pain” but she had been given bute this morning cuz we knew we were gonna ride later. In truth, she has been on a break and not saddled in a while so it leads me to think she more so was fresh and wanting her way. Any insight would be welcomed sir

When they shut down after escalating it’s because they’ve dropped into a dorsal “freeze” response. Basically her nervous system responded to a threat (probably pain as you mentioned) by first trying flight (jigging). When that didn’t work, it went to fight (kicking out). When that also wasn’t effective, it responded by dropping into freeze, which is basically every mammal’s way of coping with a threat that it can’t run from or fight

What's unacceptable is you cracking the whip like an idiot. You lost her as soon as you did that. Great way to lose her trust though if thats what you want to accomplish. Also cant hear anything you're saying with the bird squawking in the background. .
