anyone who wants to criticize the french way of riding, i learned to ride in france and they treat their horses much better than the english. the style of riding is a lot longer and looser and more relaxed- you can even see this in top level eventers. There is also much more opportunities for pasture as they aren't so pushed for space as in the UK
Is there much to choose between them? They both ride with far too much pressure on the mouth, use horrible flash nose bands and the like to stop the mouth gaping from the pain, and don’t give release often enough or sometimes at all. For most riders in both countries that appears to be the norm. Haute école is haute école all over the world, and although impressive manoeuvres are often done, too many horses are ridden behind the vertical for long periods. My remarks are general and I realise most riders think this is normal and absolutely fine.
mia animals150 and guess what the spurs or whips you use do to hackamores do to BAREBACK riding does to shoeing is bad for the horses feet metal is bad for the horse if you want to say bits are bad fine but maybe you should stop riding if you really care for the horse
I’m French and I have been riding for a very long time, and I can tell you that the horses are extremely well maintained and don’t suffer at all. In the video we can see that all this is happening in Saumur at the " Cadre Noir " I've been there several times and the horses are treated like the cream of cream so all those who say it’s abuse and the horses suffer is that you have not seen these horses with your own eyes and have no experience.
Do they ever get to enjoy being out in pasture? That’s my only concern, these horse look very taken care of and healthy but a horse could never be happy locked in a stall all it’s life... I hope that’s not the case and they at least get to go out everyday or every other day...
Can everyone stop with the unnecessary crit? Stop condemning an aspect of a culture you barely know. I know people want to cry 'abuse' but just stop. It doesn't matter, you're not helping or doing anything but stir up drama.
I see a great many people who dislike the movements which imitate rearing, bucking, and both at the same time, and a great many who consider this to be a great effort on the horse's part, but they do it all the time in pastures and with a human on their backs. Though I do not condone bronco riding, those horses can keep up this bucking-rearing-jumping combo for minutes with very little risk of injury besides physical exertion, so really, when done in a controlled manner, this shouldn't be an issue at all?
There's so much ignorance in these comments. The horses in this clip are not in pain, they are in a high level of cooperation with super skilled riders. This happens after years of fine training of both horse and man. Had this training been hurtful, the end result could not have been achieved. To an outsider it might look as though the horses are held back forcefully by the reins and the bit but they are actually seeking contact with the rider through the bit to create balance and collection necessary for the different motions. I would love to train at the Cadre Noir.
mia animals150 there not pulling on the bits and yes bits hurt but it will never change you don't go and scream at the people 100 years ago that use horses as a car? No you and guess what? They used bits. Really. Big. Bits
Rolkur / over flexion is clear is this video but it is a global problem in the sport... Bits do not hurt ,hard hands hurt the horse. Bits help reinforce positive contact which promotes correct carraige (vital for the horses health when riding)
Omg the only person the has any experience with horses and it is very clear me and mia animals150 I have been riding for two years and sure hard hands is part as well also just because it’s been used for 100 does not make it okay your clearly blind and don’t know anything about the real world, abuse and/or horses
Angie Gordon I have been riding and training horses for 13 years now. Hence i have the experience to back upmy knowledge. Not all bits are cruel. It is way worse to ride a horse incorrectly or ride a horse without teaching it proper self cariage than it is to ride with a bit. Bitless bridles can be way worse than bits in the wrong hands.
I don't see any horse that is being ridden with it's head tied up. For the one were they do the tricks on the horse(I don't know what it's called in english) it is to keep the head down. Why? Because it is incredibbly difficult to do 'gymnastics' on a horse and it gets even more difficult if the horse is moving it's head. They try to keep the head down for safety of the athletes on his back.
one of them did, actually, around 0:56. the person guiding from the ground just stepped to the side and then resumed position behind him. if a horse poops while you're mounted it doesn't really matter, you just keep going. if they need to pee they will stop and you wait for them to finish. you clean the arena after your ride.
it was a halfpass. steeper angle and horse bent in direction of movement. horses body isnt straight either - shoulders slightly lead the hindquarters - a 3 track movement

the reins are a restriction. fashion goals mean let the horses stretch their necks by holding the reins as long as they will go. but I understand it for vaulting (gymnastics on horseback)
they're not holding their heads back. if you look at the reins in any clip in this video they are not held tightly, they're just not loose. you shouldn't have your reins flapping around when you ride, that's both dangerous and confusing for the horse - if you're riding with your reins held out as long as they can possibly go, you have no contact and no control and that's really bad riding. a horse has to bring its head down to engage their hind legs. that's just how spines work, you can't arch it backwards (lifting the head up) and then expect to be able to move your limbs comfortably underneath you. if anything riding a horse through these movements with an improper arch to the neck causes pain, incorrectly developed muscles, and guarantees future discomfort and injury in your horse. there's like 1 or 2 horses shown that are behind the vertical (also bad), but it's brief snippets and when they're shown again their head carriage is fine. just because a horse occasionally tucks its chin while doing a particularly involved movement doesn't mean they're being yanked back into that position, horses rarely keep their head completely still while they're moving and neither do you.
Gosh the horses are so overbent with such heavy pressure on the bit! Makes me sad. Impressive performances, but horses were born to run free and we can go with them riding bitless if we learn to ride in tune without using force
Hailey curbo i've been riding 5 years, in not a dressage worker or anything, and it's not the hand. the hooves aren't meant to prance around and press the ankles into the footing like that, it just looks horrible to me like Tennessee walking horses.
If a horse doesn't like something, he is going to let you know, trust me. In dressage it is important to use hands and stick the least you can, therefore you are going to use your upper body and feet much more. Horses feel that and answer well to it whereas if you use your hands, you are going to find yourslf on the floor!
Vivi & Mandy do you realize how well taken care of they are? They are extremely happy. Even the horse with tensing muscles they took her to straight care and acupuncture? Their dressage moves are extremely relaxed and the riders hands are very soft. Learn what you're talking about before commenting on one of the best riding schools.
They do this in the Spanish riding school as well. This is not special to them. I do love the correctness here compared to how the FEI has mutilated it in compition.
This is not elegance, this is selfish misuse of a horse. You are obviously careless about how your horses feel. This is discussing and selfish. Poor horses.
