In this video, Larry Trocha trains two horses to do a simple flying lead change. The training is a test to see if the horse has a natural aptitude to change leads. This is the beginning stages of training a reining horse, reined cow horse or western riding horse to correctly do a flying lead change.

Lost my great ole reiner, cow horse 2 years ago. His lead changes were flawless. Used the same methods sort of. I could "think him to change several times on a straight line.😇

You're the first person I've seen to state WHEN to ask. I've been looking at what feels like a hundred videos looking for this knowledge. THANK YOU! My guy cross fires one direction- probably because I'm asking in the wrong place. However, he gives no effort to change the other direction. I'm going to have to work on this more to figure it out. You have no idea how much a GODSEND this video is!

Fine riding! The fact that you get such nice changes right from the start kinda makes me wonder if you're using your seat and weight in a manor not mentioned in this clip. For sure, if I would do the rein and leg aids as described but without a proper seat, no such clean change would take place. Subscribing.

Thanks for subscribing. Yes, a good seat is a plus to getting good lead changes but there is nothing mysterious about it. Many people ride on their thighs instead of their butt. This prohibits them from getting good performance.

I’m currently teaching my horse lead changes, I’ve never taught a horse changes before and this video is really helpful! It’s especially good to know the timing of when to ask when the hind legs are off the ground, big thanks!

I’m on a finished reiner and having so much fun… but our changes aren’t always as smooth as I would like… I think it is my timing… thank you for this video!

That's a common problem. In the training video on my website, I show a way train your horse to change leads without the timing being so critical.

Great video. My 6yr old gelding knows more than me. I am catching up. I'm working on smooth canter transitions. I think flying leads are coming soon. Thanks for the hoof timing tip to cue before the rear hoof hits the ground.Hope you had a great season. Cheers from BC

So , it is about timming and the very moment his hind legs are in the air to ask with light signals , am I right boss ?

You are right... but the timing is easier said than done. Very important!

When your changing leads and you say put out leg on do mean on what point 2 or 3 to change legs

Hi leanne, I'm not quite sure I understand your question. Maybe reword it.

This is so diff from english... i guess which makes sense because there is no way a horse would feel your seat through a western saddle.
@ltrocha
@ltrocha Год назад
Actually, the horse can feel your seat in a western saddle. Just not to the degree of an english saddle. Much less bulk with the english saddle for sure.
