Sometimes the cues and "tricks" we teach our horses can backfire unexpectedly. Consider that before you teach your horse something exotic. Here are some examples of how things can go sideways.
About Herm Gailey:
Herm Gailey has spent a lifetime with horses. He is a nonprofessional rider who starts and trains his own horses to successful careers in multiple disciplines. Away from the show ring Herm retains a deep respect and appreciation for good reliable trail riding horses and believes that all horses benefit from this type of riding.

My dad told me this story many years ago, as the Preacher's mule. So much fun to hear it again! Thank you!

This is so true. I experienced this with a trick I taught my dog. Glad you’re feeling better to be riding your horse.

My experience with a mystery cue was with my friend’s horse. He had little time to ride and I had the time. The horse was a very sweet boy, but needed sone work. He had been a ranch horse, rope horse, movie horse and they bought him off of a rent string. He had big legs, big, feet and a big head and a deep neck, but all very sturdy and his body was put together pretty well. His trot and lope were like falling down stairs, rough! I figured there was a smooth moving horse with some good training in there someplace. He did smooth out and was like sitting on a couch, but I was having a hard time getting him to pick the correct lead. After he smoothed out, I noticed that he would usually pick up the opposite lead when I cued him the traditional way. I then tried tapping my foot near the shoulder of the lead that I wanted and that worked, but it took me a long time to bumble into it and I had a vague recollection of someone telling me about it as a kid. I mentioned that to Julie Goodnight and she said it was a Monte Forman method!
