Who Is More Sure-Footed, a Horse or Mule?
When it comes to the debate about whether a horse or a mule is better we are here to help solve it. We used four different animals and tested their ability to climb slick rock. Which animals do you think did the best?

Breed of horse, riders ability, and the horse's confirmation make a big difference. I have had many different breeds of horses. The most sure footed of all of the horses that I have ridden is my little Paso Fino. The most uncoordinated animals that I have ever ridden were my own Tennessee Walker and Quarter Horse. Is my Paso Fino a better horse? No. My Walker gets me from point A to point B in a very fast and comfortable manner. My Quarter horse is fun to ride because he is athletic and very versatile. All breeds and individuals animals excel at something. That is why there are so many breeds.

I have taken tons of mules and horses hunting in the mountains and have never once considered a horse over a mule. Mules are just tougher animals all around. I've found them to be smarter, more affectionate, more hard headed, more sure footed, but serious pains in the ass. They will stop and do what they want at their chosen time. They will wander away from groups as horses choose to hang out with a whole herd. Awesome video! It makes me wanna quit my job and run back to the mountains .

I am partial to mules but not everyone can handle them. They are smart, they think, they have strong opinions and you need to be at least as smart as the mule to get any satisfaction. Much to my shock, I found that working with Arabian horses was just exactly like working with mules when it came to the animal being smart, having an agenda, and REMEMBERING who did what to him. LOL A mule or an Arabian will bust itself wide open to please you or help you if you have enough sense and respect to achieve that bond.

Donkeys are territorial and often chase large pray away which is why they are used as guardians for sheep and smaller livestock so of course a mule would have that same instinct. @Oakleaf700

It is OBVIOUS a Mule will be better at terrain like this. Horses are fine at coming down and going up steep hills, like when they are grassy covered..as long as the rider stays in the centre of gravity and loosens the reins giving the horse his head. a Native pony is superb, but I am way too tall for those now...but they scamper up and down hilly boggy terrain with ease. In WW1 Mules were indispensable. {son's great grandad was in Royal Horse Artillery, but a Mule would go where the horses could not.

Another thing, mules don't fear snakes, or leopards, they don't fear nothing, they see them and want to beat the crap out of them. In Mexico those mules are used in la sierra, mainly because of those features, some places were horse won't dare to go mules go with out hesitation.

Mule feet can break rock. Mules almost never need shoes to my knowledge. HARD hooves. With tough soles and good balance, climbing up and down rocks can even be good for them. It helps push blood by the hoof pumping it back up the leg, and keeps their hooves in nice condition for longer.

@@SophandMer That's why horses have shoes and usually mules/donkeys/ponies don't wear any, because horses have been bred domestic for so long. (unless the more wild breeds the other person stated like morgans etc!) their feet don't have the same quality that they used to and tend to be more sensitive because they aren't put through rough terrain--even trail horses usually have a nice path to walk through, smart riders don't ride a horse up a mountain like the silly people in this vid haha. I think the first part of your video made your point. To subject your horses to further comparison to a mule is putting your interest above your animal. The palomino's knees are buckling. The horse is struggling but he continues because of his trust in his owner. I would never subject my horse to to this difficult unbalanced terrain. And if I found myself in this situation.....I would dismount and lead him down safely.

0:44 “it’s not even that steep it’s just a little...” excuse me, he fell on his knees! If that horse or mule gets an abscess it’s you to blame. She’s a LOT scratched up. @CowgirlGoneJumper
@CowgirlGoneJumper 4 года назад
Quiet Riot while I agree that the horse needed medical attention definitely not vet extent. The scratches I highly doubt needed more than a Wash out and a bit antiseptic cream. Watch for inflammation but nothing more. I highly doubt an abscess would occur. I will say I would stay on till more sure footed ground. Getting off immediately when down could be dangerous not only to rider but to the horse as they are off balanced when mounted and I mounted which in that situation could cause worse. Staying as steady and centered during something like that is the safest and best option. I normally don’t dismount unless I Know my horse isn’t sound. I’ll test out his gaits to see how he feels (you might miss a lameness at the walk if it’s subtle so the trot can be far mor telling.) as far as vet and dismount when it happened no. Waste of money and potentially dangerous. As far as doing that he does know the horse better and probably wasn’t expecting a slip from that incline seeing as the horse is more experienced. Maybe wasn’t the best idea though. God knows exploring I’ve made some dumb mistakes with my guy (nearly flipped us because I didn’t realize the “puddle” was actually very deep) and he’s bailed me out. I learn from them though and he’s gone down (it was due to a bad trip when we were bringing him back to work after a pasture injury from another horse on his knee thankfully perfectly healed now) and it’s scary but staying centered is the safest option until you can safely dismount
@lilyryan3146
@lilyryan3146 4 года назад
@@CowgirlGoneJumper While the knee scrapes are pretty much superficial and like you said, just need washed out and disinfected, I'm more worried about the splits that poor horse did when it was sliding and trying to regain it's footing. Horses are not meant to spread their legs that far apart, especially with the weight of a rider and the horse's own weight sliding down a hill. While probably not vet worthy (since these guys bang themselves up all the time anyway) I would definitely dismount and let the horse stand, then walk slowly and look for pain. Overextension like that would mean pulled muscles at the very least, but I would also be on the lookout for a sprain or even a fracture. While I agree that it wasn't his intention to hurt his horse, things definitely could have gone very wrong here. It's not like comparing cars, these are both living animals who can get injured very easily, especially if you are kicking a horse up a slick, steep slope.
@AnneDalton82
@AnneDalton82 4 года назад
@@CowgirlGoneJumper I was very worried because they were so casual about the horse struggling, falling, slipping, that horse could have really hurt their knees for life very easily. I know it didn't happen, but knowing that could happen and taking the risk of your horse's wellbeing for a RU-vid video is.. Not acceptable to me. I love riding and while riding I make it my biggest interest that nobody gets hurt and if an accident occurs I do my best to avoid that ever happening again, and learn from my mistakes. It all comes down to making sure the rider and horse are safe. That was nothing short of anything resembling safety.. That guy should have at least given a little pride up to protect his head and wear a helmet.

This isn't even a proper experiment as too many variables play into effect to favor the mule. If the horse and mule were taken up and down in the exact same spot for every test, then there would be a better result, but the fact that they were taken up and down different spots, it caused the mule to be at an advantage as the horse was directed to spots that was much harder
@quietriot7132
@quietriot7132 4 года назад
Hanna Fardew and the independent variable was the mule vs horse surefootedness. The variables only supposed to change once. The weight of tack change, saddle pads, and rider. The horses in this did phenomenal given the obstacles they were facing. Also quite willing to meet the challenge whereas the mule gave more thought to whether it should trudge on or not. That being said, mules are better equipped for this type of footing for a number of reasons. One being that the shape, size, height, and angle of their hooves cup smooth surfaces for better grip. They also are very skilled at walking with their pasterns, hocks, or even knees touching the ground for more stability. Lastly, they have an ambling gait for traversing slopes or unsteady footing which can be seen in the last obstacle. You'll see that the mule walks in small, quick steps and that the hooves on the left side move at the same time then the hooves on the right move at the same time. Whereas a horse moves left front and right hind then right front and left hind in large steps. Many more factors but here's a few!

Great video showing the difference between the two. I have a question for you though. i’m pushing 60 years old, have been riding & training since I was five years old. I grew up with mules on the farm, but I always ridden horses, as the mules were only for working the fields, etc. Now that I have retired, I want to get a mule to finish out my days trail riding on. Which is better? A John or a Jenny? I have heard that John’s usually work better for women and Jennys work better for men. Is there any truth in that? I have always bonded with my horse and my horse would do anything I asked of him. I want the same in a mule, but I am unclear as to which would be better,… Jack or Jenny. Do you have any thoughts on that? keep up the great work! Kat in NC
@BroncsAndDonks
@BroncsAndDonks 5 лет назад
Thanks for watching and commenting! I wouldn’t over look a mule because of its gender, Some of my favorite mules have been both Johns and Jennys. They have all worked great for me. A mule might be unsure of you, and not work for you immediately, if he has only had a single rider. It’s usually not that big of a problem but it is a good idea to find a mule with exposer to multiple riders.

Mules hardiness and sure-footedness combined with their ability to subsist on natural forage led to their regular use in the US Army from 1870 through the Korean War.

The horse wanted to go back to two up two down even if he did have three feet on the ground occasionally, he would go back to 2 and 2. Good video.

I don't know much about equine, even though my daughter had a horse until she went to college. It appears the Mule's body and legs are stockier ( kind of obvious) but how about the ratio of femur length , hip design , bone thickness ratio or something like that would be interesting. Maybe that plays a role in how the critters place their hoofs down more securely. It seems the mule is more confident, she feels balanced with her weight, while the horse's longer legs? makes her feel rocky. -he he no pun intended.

Looks like the horse and the mule have different size and shape of hoof . I think that makes a difference too. Perhaps if you can come up with a horseshoe or boot to help with gripping and not slipping ( they weld little spots of boron metal for ice for winter horseshoes )and also have the horses feet trimmed to a more ideal shape. I’m Just having a bit of sympathy for the underdog here.

The biggest thing to remember is donkeys where bred for hauling on Land as such. Same with ponies. You don’t just breed for color but for an athletic and thorough thinking mind set, which is why donkeys and mules are great for packing and heavy foot work. It’s genetically engineered for the mule to be (most of the time) to be sure footed and aware of its surroundings. Horses are naturally more flighty and more worried about what’s going on around the highend and head then their feet. Also depends on the horses, animal in general. If you can watch the body language of the sorrel mare, she over thought where her feet go which brought her to slide back down and on her knees. Over thinking is common with horses! Doesn’t matter on the breed, fight or flight is the motto for equine. You can’t judge on if an animal is shod or not. I have a half Arabian who never needs shoes and is a great endurance gelding. Shoes can make a trail harder on an animal, especially if they throw one. Guy was just trying to help educate folks who might lack the understanding of how different a mind set can be from a horse, to a mule.

I never had a mule for riding, we had horses. They skidded on rocks a lot, some we knew to get off and let them do what they had to to get down spots, but if we stayed on almost always they chose what they could or couldn't do and we just held the horn. I did have one quarter horse, though, as the group cantered up the hill, the horse ahead of us went down on front knees and started sliding into my boy's chest. He was leaping/running in place hard to hold the horse in front of us in place and not fall down the steep slope with him. Was super proud of him for holding on so well until horse in front could get up and go again. Bit scary.

Good informational video, but would not put my horse in that predicament. As a rider and a leader for my horse, the animal is trusting me not to get her hurt. So we got to as horsemen use good discernment when riding in areas that could result in injuries and jeopardize safety for both equine and rider. Happy Trails :)

Keep your boots out of the stirrups when going up or down uneven terrain. If the horse falls over, you can quickly get your leg out on the side that the horse is falling. This will prevent you from being pinned by the horse and breaking a leg or get crushed.
