I am impressed with the layout of your hosta gardens. I really like the color arrangement, and the way the heights are arranged so that the shorter ones are in front, and the taller ones in the back.
Loose soil is beneficial. Keeping slugs at bay as well. And if the frost gets to them then chop em back immediately. Mulching is also beneficial...as seen here. Not too much sunlight...certainly not heavy exposure to it around midday.
Mine as well. I only have around 15-20 varieties currently, but many of them came out of my mom and grandma’s gardens over the years so they’re all special to me
Hi James looks like everything bounced back well from the polar vortex. We had a few heavy frosts and a snowfall in late April in the Pocono mountains Pa and my hostas looked terrible but they're coming back nicely. Good to see Dexter again !!! 🐈
Thanks for such a great video really think you have a great collection. Hostas a such a versatile plant very collectable and look fantastic planted on mass
@@truthfinder6932 I'm recovering, I only bought 1 this year (Bridal Falls). Although I did sell a bunch on Kijiji. Canadian equivalent of Craigslist. It covered the cost of the mulch and fertilizer ( mostly)
Hi, you made a great hosta garden, I don't manage to keep my hostas, they are eaten by slugs and snails. What do you do against slugs and snails ? Thanks.
I don't do anything. I really don't have much of a problem with slugs. There are slug resistant varieties. Sieboldiana and Sum & Substance are two of the more common slug resistant varieties.
Your garden is lovely! I really like the combinations you have put together and love that you included most of the names. I inherited 1 hosta (-name un known- large plain med. green puckered leaves & light purple blooms-if you have any ideas, LOL) when I moved in it was about 2' across x 1.5' tall and now is about 6' across x 2.5' tall 4 years later. it was my inspiration to start a hosta garden and now I have close to 50 with room for more. what are your favorite sources for your hostas? I find ordering online is pretty expensive for the size you get but locally there just isn't much variety.
For an ID post a pic on the houzz hosta forum, you'll get an answer. I've never ordered a hosta online, I like to see the plant before I buy. I like Tree Valley garden center in Stouffville. There are also a number of speciality hosta sellers within an hour of me. I'm out of room now (just shy of 100) I'm actually looking to decrease the number of cultivars I have. I'm getting too crowded. Enjoy your plants.
Thanks Kimberly, I use an 18-18-18 I get in 25kg bags at the farm supply store. I fertilize once in late april/ early May pretty heavy when the bullets are just poking out. And again in early June just before I mulch.
Olá ! Tenho visto essas plantas e realmente muito lindas , acabei de receber as cementes que eu comprei no aplicativo da china não sei se autentica ,vc poderia me enviar algumas de duas cementes por favor eu moro no Brasil rio de janeiro ?
LOVE your garden. I was trying to write some of the names down as you went lol. @11:44 top left hand side in the back. Can you please tell me the name of that one? Thank you so much for sharing
This is fantastic. I'm so glad I found your chanel. Are you in canada? I'm in zone 5 too, near Chicago. Our polar votex two years ago took out massive boxwood.
Hello. I just love your Hosta garden!! You mention Canadian Tire, what province are you in. I’m in AB. Zone 4. So harsh winters. Lots of -40 and some -50 dips. I’m hoping some hardy Hostas will work for me. I have a North facing back yard I can plant lots in. And also a north east side wall with morning sun until around 1330 then it’s all shade. Any recommendations please on varieties you think will work for me? I have 2 PW Shadowland Diamond Lake. And a few others just labeled ‘hosta’ lol thanks Home Depo. Cheers!
Hostas will do fine in zone 4. Really its whatever you like. Alot of the older varieties are more durable than the newer more derived cultivars. Some of my more vigorous favorites are Atlantis, Luna Moth, Goodness Gracious there are many others.
Is that creeping Jenny in one of your beds? Do you have a problem keeping it under control? I’m debating on planting it in one of my flower beds. What zone are you?
Angela, it is creeping jenny. It can be a problem if it gets in the lawn. I only plant it in contained or raised beds so I can control it. Thanks for watching. I am in Zone 5b southern Ontario.
Hello James, please advise whether pulmonaria is invasive in your garden. I consider buying pulmonaria but some people consider it overly vigorous grower.
Just started some barefoot hostas, I buy them through A Catolog, they are small but looking forward to them getting bigger, there was supposed to be a white one ,but all I see is stripes 🤔
All "white" hostas ( white feather being the most common) start out white in the spring. But green up as the season progresses. They have to, as they need the chlorophyll to grow.
@@dudley0826 Thanks, my first time buying them, so I didn't know what to expect, Your Collections is beautiful, and well put together, I can only dream 😊
All it takes is time, water, decent soil, and a few shade trees. It's not expensive. But you have to be patient. 8 years ago when I moved here there was nothing but weeds and an old plastic kids playset. 15 yards of triple mix and 6 trees ( all less than 50.00) plus several years of hosta buying, and this is the result. I'm not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination. I did this pretty cheaply.
Your hosts are beautiful. It's so obvious how you care for them. I certainly don't have as many as you do but I have a few. One time I was asked why I didn't add color in my hosta garden. My hostas to me are a way of letting my eyes and smells take a brake to sooth my thoughts. Wow..my sum and substance hosta is so big this year! Enjoyed your tour.
@@brendalee2896 Yes, hosta gardens are very peaceful. It's a very tropical look in temperate gardens. S&S is a real giant. I think most people dont realize how big it gets when they buy a one gallon pot at the nursery. Thanks for the kind words.
