How to grow new hostas from seed.
Part 1 described the harvest and cleaning of hosta seeds.
Part 2 described sowing the seeds and seeing germination.
I have grown hostas for about 30 years and have been growing my own hybrids for about 10 years. I am a member of the American Hosta Society and the Delaware Valley Hosta Society, and have learned from the pros.

Thank you for this set of three video's. I like Hosta plants quite a bit, it never occurred to me that propagating them by seed would be at all easy. It must be nice to have the amount of success that you can be picky and actually discard some of them.

Thanks very much for well explaining…I thought the seeds were the flaky blacks that made it to the fall!!! I have tried to plant them with no luck. There is process to do, I didn’t have an idea how it was and it seems slowly too!!! Thank you, 😊 I very much appreciate your knowledge.

In video #3 you had 100% plantaginea babies and plantaginea baby crosses, I assume by open pollination. Did you pollinate the plantaginea yourself with other plantaginea? How do you get them 100% plantaginea? Really enjoyed your videos by the way! Thank you!

Because plantaginea blooms at night even with open pollination, they are certainly self pollinated.

So when do you plop these babes in the ground outside? Do they need to be a certain age before they hibernate over winter?

Is there another video before this one to show seed collection process, planting medium, the complete process?

I have always been interested in obtaining plantaginea. Where can I find one or two in Vermont?

So I took some seeds from my daughter's huge hosta plants when the seeds pods turn brown and open. How do it know if the actual seeds are good or bad? do you water them as a seed? How long does it take to see a stem sprout 🌱

Do you suffer with slugs? If so do you have any tips? Mine get ravaged every year no matter what I try! I’m in the uk! Thanks for the vlogs, I’m going to give it a try!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Where did you learn about hostas? I was wishing you would go into more info;). I nerd out on this stuff. I harvested some seeds from a hosta I have. Not sure of the species. From what you said, is it even possible to absolutely KNOW the species?

Hello, I planted a number of seeds in February & April in small pots, and probably have 30 hostas about 2-3 inches tall. It's November in Massachusetts and the hosta plant outside I took the seeds from is now completely yellow due to the change in seasons and it will come back next year. However, now about half of the seedlings I have inside are turning yellow too. My question is what happens to the seedlings over the winter? Are these expected to turn yellow, fade, then come back next year? Should I continue watering lightly over the winter? Thank you,
@davidteager

The seedlings, like their parent hostas, need to go dormant over winter. They spent the entire summer indoors? If you watched my videos you can see they are better to spend summer outdoors, so they can go in the ground in the late summer or early fall. Now they will need to be overwintered as other potted hostas. See www.delvalhosta.org/hostas-in-pots

At what point did you remove the humidity domes?
@davidteager
@davidteager Год назад
You can start to transition them to regular air after they each have 3-4 leaves. Depends a little on the humidity in your growing area. Mine’s in a basement, so stays a bit moist. 💦

Where did you get your seeds please?

I bought my original streaker seeds from online auctions. Now I mostly use my own. (See part 1 of the series.)
