One scene I found so interesting in this movie was where the guy torturing Paxton hesitates once he starts speaking his language. It kinda shows how easily something like a language barrier can alter your ability to connect and view another human being as an actual person.

This is one of the main reasons people with any disability that affects speech, are often abused and treated in a dehumanising manner.
@mask938
@mask938 11 месяцев назад
One of the best methods of connecting with someone is speaking their language after all. Another thing I noticed about that scene is that the German guy gets angry when Paxton starts speaking to him in German to the point of gagging him to keep him from speaking at all. I think the reason the German guy got angry was because when Paxton spoke to him in his language, he inadvertently made it harder for the German guy to torture him. It's easier for us to kill an animal than another human because we can't understand animals the same way we can understand humans, but if we could understand animals the same way, we'd have a harder time killing them. The same principle applies in this situation. The German guy couldn't view Paxton as glorified livestock anymore because there wasn't a language barrier between them anymore. He could no longer ignore the fact that he was harming a fellow human being.

As a Slovak that lives in Bratislava, thank you so much for covering the controversy with Hostel. I am not exxagerating when I say this movie genuinely made Slovakia a bit infamous. I worked a lot with Americans over the years and despite it was a minority, surprising amount of them thought movie’s based on true story when they learned Slovakia actually exists…

That is so weird to me that so many do not know about it because even as a small child I remember the Bosnian War, Czechslovakia, etc. However, perhaps it is because my older brother was in the Army and brought a gf home who was from the former Czechslovakia. I clearly remember the separation, etc. Western Eurasians often depict East Eurasia very negatively I've noticed. I remember my bros ex girlfriend was very nice to me, her name was Ivanna.

As an American, it saddens me to hear that some people can't discern fact from fiction. Even if this were a true story, I would never judge an entire country on the actions of a few. I have never been to Slovakia, but I would imagine in actuality it is a pleasant country with a vast majority of good and decent people.
@LaFlor718
@LaFlor718 11 месяцев назад
I knew a girl back when the movie came out who was dumber than a bag of rocks and after Hostel came out she said she would never go to Europe because of “what they do” over there. I was baffled because she American born but of European descent and my whole Caribbean/Latino family has traveled to Europe and had wonderful experiences. But stupid is stupid sometimes. However it annoyed my sister and I and we argued with her one night over her close minded ideals.

I really like that Paxton, while not necessarily being a good person, goes from someone you hate to someone you're rooting for by the end of the movie. It's all well and good to hate a character, but when you actually start to like the guy it makes it all the more intense. I do also like how he goes all vigilante instead of just trying to escape.

Kana's death in this film is honestly one of the most tragic deaths I've seen in a modern horror movie. She hadn't even done anything wrong, yet was given the worst torture out of anyone else in the film, and right when you think she's gonna make it out alive she kills herself right then and there. Its fucking devastating, seriously.

The scene where Paxton talks about hearing a girl drown as a kid was actually included to set up his decision to go back and save her. While Paxton isn’t a particularly malevolent person, him risking his neck like that for a stranger while he’s wounded, being actively hunted, and doesn’t know where to go would be something that most people would avoid doing in a situation like that, but since he has that past trauma of not being able to save someone who needed him, he has the motivation to do such a dangerous task, and the audience understands why he’s doing it and doesn’t see it as a forced and poorly written plot moment.

It’s like saying crime doesn’t exist etc. U can, again, say and think and believe w/e the f u want. Chances are, u are a normal person and prob try to stay away from crime and things of that nature (my entire case and point) so why would you “know” about the darker things that go on etc? To deny them tho, or act like it’s not a thing that happens. Stfu, there is again, a REASON the area was picked, if you KNOW what goes on in those areas etc. Yah not even that hard to believe, is all I’m saying. Where, sure (again if u are this peace loving person who stays away from crimes etc) ONE side YOU see to a place/country may ring true, it doesn’t mean the side you DON’T know about, doesn’t exist. James is literally a f’en flower, the fact that HE is the host for “killing” and movies of that nature etc. Is a joke itself. For u to believe this clown and even you yourself, like between both of you fruit cakes stfu. What kind of crimes have both of you fruit cake flowers committed? So why would anyone expect for you two idiots to HAVE any actual knowledge of what goes down. It’s ignorant. It’s like saying “Miami” is a safe/nice town, just because YOU don’t get involved with said crimes etc. Then pretty much ANY place is a f’en magical place u dipshhhhs. These areas WERE picked for a reason. Go look up HISTORY on that entire area (the BAD stuff) u will see why this movie took place in this area. Ultimately they changed the area (pretty sure even brought it to the USA, further proving my point) just because u are a robot and u live a good life doesn’t mean this messed up dark life isn’t going on around you. Just because YOUR experiences were good in the Czech region, doesn’t make it a “safe” region. Not at all. N further more just proves your ignorance and James’. Your experience is, ONE out of an entire “country/city/whatever is being discussed etc.” Like stfu, stop feeling like your this entitled person and only what you say rings true. U just prove how little you actually know about the place you grew up in tho. Again, a simple example. Is take ANY city, n just because YOU had a good experience living in that city (Miami as the example) doesn’t make the “city” and the “dark shhhh that DOES go on” (that YOU aren’t aware of) in that city go away. It just means, you aren’t apart of it, again, maybe IGNORANT about what’s truly going on etc. It’s like saying no human trafficking goes on in Czech, n u my friend are an ignorant FOOL if u believe that then. Plenty of bad shhh goes on in Czech, that CULTURE in general has a pretty grim history. So again, between u, James and every other ignorant robot that wants to live in fairy tale land. How about stfu, actually do some HISTORY research and stop forcing YOUR experiences and this “just” statement. Because u have no f’en idea what u are talking about. Perfect area for them to pick. N for many reasons. U just prove u don’t know shhh about the Czech culture. By trying to say they are some “nice” fantastic culture lol. Literally grim as f history. It’s a place where plenty of dark shhh is going on BEHIND CLOSED DOORS aka reason why even this MOVIE does what it does. I’m sorry are they saying Czech is some culture that OPENLY just slaughters people in broad daylight? Like no, u dipshhhhs. So again, if u are an AVERAGE, IGNORANT ROBOT TOOL (such as u and James) u don’t THINK anything like this GOES ON. Like human trafficking etc. U and James are tools. The whole POINT of this movie (n again why they CHANGE countries later in the franchise to PROVE THE POINT I AM MAKING) is to show ALL YOU ROBOTS who live life thinking dark shhh isn’t going on, yah wake the f up, cause that’s the POINT of this movie. Dark shhh going on behind closed doors that, YOU, as the ignorant robot you are, aren’t aware of. To YOU Czech is this “peaceful” loving place. Case and point. Movie did exactly what it set out to do. Show idiots robots, wtf goes on BEHIND CLOSED DOORS. Things u may not want to accept or believe because all YOU think your area is, is safe, nice etc when u have no idea. Entire point of this franchise. Czech region is very dark, very grim, just because YOU don’t know about what goes on, or want to deny it, doesn’t mean it’s not happening. Facts. It’s like once again, trying to say, Czech isn’t a place that does human trafficking and why? Just because YOUR personal experience was a good one? Stop living in a bubble u f’en robot.

I remember they said they adopted a bunch of pets, and raised a lot of money for the shelters on the shoot. Imagine being stressed out filming death scenes, screaming and running for hours and then getting to lay in a puppy pile or play with some kittens! I've been watching your channel off and on since I was a Junior in High School and I still love some of your content James.A Denise,I've always loved watching horror movies since I was a very small boy and I still do,just not as often, because I look forward to seeing and spending time with the very special lady that came into my life,just over two months ago and there's more to life than just sitting inside and watching horror movies or playing videogames all day.

The joy I felt at the end of the video. My friend and I quote “Of course, my horse!” at each other all the time since we’ve watched the movie together.

Wow. James finally did it. Hostel is officially a kill count legend now. Awesome. This channel has come such a long way. I still remember and regularly watch the first ever 7 minute kill count on Friday the 13th. Thanks James. We support you supporting the actors. ✌️

$10,000 is waaay too low for the "opportunity" to kill someone. I have no idea what a "fair" price would be for something awful like that, but it shouldn't be casually affordable to an upper middle class person. (Obviously, it shouldn't be happening at all, in case that wasn't clear enough.) I think I'm even more sickened by it being "affordable." That's a human life. Life is so, so valuable and fleeting. I can't even wrap my head around it

This movie is amazing with the fact that the whole premise of the movie is people paying to do whatever they want (The Sex worker side) the vice versa on the Hunters side where they do the same thing! They even invert the rooms to make the message more known

Ironically, this movie inspired my all time favorite Ice Nine Kills song, Wurst Vacation, an absolute brutal but fun song since as far as I'm concerned, if they do a third Silver Scream album, it's gonna hard to out-do that song as they went all out with how crazy the song is

I always had a kind of fear of this movie, being kidnapped or technically taken is horrifying. What I’m saying is it feels real, and I’ve grown on it.

My friend made me watch this prior to my backpacking trip across Europe when I was 19 at mostly (you guessed it) hostels. Made the trip interesting to say the least.

You’re right about it being basically a time capsule. I was only 3 for most of 2005, but I just watched this movie about a week ago and it felt so nostalgic, and for really no reason at all. Lmao

You know the kill count is going to be good, when it gets aged restricted less than 15 minutes after being uploaded.

Thought the kidnap ending drives home the main character as being very morally ambiguous, where although you were rooting for him till that point, you now see what the trials he's faced have started to turn him into.

I’ve always found the premise of this film really scary compared to most other films. Like with the Saw films for example, they got so outlandish that they weren’t really scary anymore because it just sort of feasibly wouldn’t happen. But the idea of something like this happening feels very real and that’s why it’s so scary to me

I watched Night of the Demons when I was 8 & was scarred for years. I finally watched it again around 17 & all the memories I had repressed came flooding back. It was great. That lipstick scene at 8 years old was something I never forgot.
