Here is a video of an unexpected event on the rails. While chasing CSX M692 from Augusta to Evans, Georgia, they received a hot wheel alert on a hazmat tank car from the Evans defect detector, sometimes called a hot box detector. They stopped over the Industrial Park Drive crossing straddling the hill with a very long train. Apparently, a single wheel tripped the detector, but all wheels on the car registered higher than usual suggesting all the brakes were applied while in motion. The conductor found and rode the car to the crossing. Some additional CSX workers arrived by road to help free the stuck brakes. I was going to head home but thought instead I would ride over to the Clarks Hill defect detector just to see if the fix was successful and show the full length of the train. Hats off to the CSX workers for keeping the trains and community safe.

Enjoyed the video! I live in McCormick SC and I chase the CSX trains whenever I get the the chance. The best ones are the trains that have the depressed center flatcar one the rear end with an escort caboose! I am old enough to remember the days when a train was not a train unless it had a caboose on the rear. Thanks again.

Thank you. I miss the cabooses, too. I often film trains on the McCormick Subdivision. It's beautiful country.

Your right sad to see them go from what I heard the old head conductors say it was a lot more fun to come to work back then they did have some bad stories about getting hit with slack train handling ment a lot more back then they don’t teach stretch braking anymore it’s not allowed

I just subbed. I know mbmars01 has been documenting trains between SC and north Georgia over time and this channel reminds me of that.

They have a great channel. Lots of CSX on the Abbeville Subdivision. Thank you for watching.

The McCormick Subdivision is great for chasing and photogenic, more so when it's not winter. Thank you for watching.

I agree that was a good video believe it or not that doesn’t happen very often and if it does 9 out of 10 times it’s a bad reading

Your camera has fantastic sound, what model is it? I use a Canon XA-20 which as pro sound (XLR mic jacks).

It's a Sony zv-e10. I have a Rode mic, but the jack isn't working right, so it's just the stock mic that came with the camera. It's still very good. Thank you for watching.

Does anyone know if the Locomotive crew has access to a thermal imaging camera or thermometer? These devices would confirm the actual temperature of suspect wheels, bearings and axles.
@TheGeorgiaRoad
@TheGeorgiaRoad 5 месяцев назад
Maybe someone else would know. I did overhear on the scanner only one wheel triggeed the alert, but whomever monitors the defect detector noted all wheels on the tank car were elevated.

CSX issues conductors temple sticks that melt at 200°F. They look like pink crayons. We would make a mark on the suspected roller bearing and saw if it melted.. But I'm sure some conductors probably went out and bought a handheld digital thermometer.
@pamhensley3126
@pamhensley3126 4 месяца назад
No we don’t when the detector gives us a warning it gives us the axle from the front of the train and which side and which wheel we have a temperature testing stick it looks like a big crayon you make a mark on certain spots if it’s ok it just leaves a chalky crayon type mark but if it’s hot it instantly turns to liquid you definitely know it there is safe guards too though if you get to that axle and it’s not hot you check so many on each side of the reported hot axle

If it was caused by a handbrake left on it sounds like somebody could get in trouble.

Yes and no if it’s near the head end and the train had been tied down but other than that if it’s in the middle or rear for some reason no if your doing a initial terminal brake test and miss it yes

Why don't they move the train to not block the crossing? Companies only think of their profit and not the impact on the community.
@pamhensley3126
@pamhensley3126 4 месяца назад
It doesn’t work like that if it’s the only crossing for a mile in either direction than yeah we will clear up but in the middle of a town either way you might have 8 blocked so it doesn’t matter it’s just a bad situation plus once we find out there is a problem it’s on us what if moving it 50 feet causes the wheel to fall off I know it’s aggravating but some times it can’t be helped
@cculpepper703

so how many cars does this have?
@TheGeorgiaRoad
@TheGeorgiaRoad 4 месяца назад
I don't know offhand. Take the axle count from the defect detector, subtract 6 for each 6-axle locomotive, 4 for a 4-axle locomotive, and then divide by 4.
@tcvideosennistexas
@tcvideosennistexas 4 месяца назад
well,,,you would need to know if the axle count started with the 'hot' axle detection and then counting from the hot axle and then to the rear of the train, and then if and how many power units and their nomenclature to the rear of the train. And normally, for inspection purposes you would inspect the 5 cars ahead of the 'detection, and the 5 cars behind the detected unit, of course with@@TheGeorgiaRoad

CSX detector gives from head of train east or west side of train the crew knows what axles they have for power so they can look at the work order and give you a car number and what’s in it
@pamhensley3126
@pamhensley3126 4 месяца назад
It helps to know before you ever walk back there in case it’s a hazmat so you know what you might be walking into
@cculpepper703
@cculpepper703 4 месяца назад
a 'car number ' would certainly be good to know,,,provided , of course that the consist is, 'correct',,,,,of course we all know the computer consist would never be wrong...... @@pamhensley3126
