This is nuts I just messaged the owner of this company about getting one of these for my 800. And so I come on the internet to look for some more clips and here’s my favorite personality on the RU-vid demoing it. Hell yeah!!
Cool man! Yeah it’s a great device to give some ”Bad Boy” (my old JCM800) mojo to any other 800 or Plexi. I’ll actually do a video about it with my Plexi after my vacation 👌🤟.
The "Bad Boy" is the King of Marshall Amps - You deservedly sit on the throne and reign supreme. You really are a Tone Wizard, and I love the synergy between your gear and your playing. When I want to hear the best of what a Marshall or Peavey sounds like, your channel is where I go. The Hot Mod did a good job, particularly in your hands. Thanks! 😎
Man I love that BAD BOY amp. has so much presence and power. I do remember telling you about the Hotmod V2 awhile ago. Was great to see you give it a try.
lol i am just getting a yeti or ceriatone 2203 and then mod it to 5 or more gain stages and more eq , etc. effects loop , oh and quad simultaneous inputs for four guitars simultaneously.
Cool! I prefer stock 2203s and just boost them with SD-1 if I need more juice 😎. Can’t argue with personal preferences ’cos if it sounds good it’s good 👌.
The Mod works awesome, The bad boy still has slightly more spank, over all they both sound incredible! Enjoy your Easter weekend with family Euge take care am sure your itching to play live agian.👍🎸🙏
Someday I’ll try it! Having pedals in front of my sc20h always sucks some tone, not just turning the pedal off, but having circuits between the guitar and the imput jack makes the amp loose respond. Great video!
Hi Euge, I am finally joining your army and just ordered a 2203x reissue, st rock react, suhr reactive IR and also this V2 mod. I will most likely still look to use an SD1 in front. This should be fun. Thanks for the inspiration!
@@EugeValovirta230V all along this journey I am applying your philosophy on how to dial in a good guitar tone and just finding the best gear to represent my personal sound. Your words of wisdom are fantastic!
I first heard of this from RICH WARD of STUCK MOJO (Now in FOZZY), THIS was the very SECRET of how he was getting all that GAIN from his MARSHALL JCM 800 2204 head!!!
Euge, I watch and enjoy all your videos but there is no way I could ever pronounce your name correctly the really cool way you do it. You sound like an awesome James Bond baddie or some guitar God! It's great how you do it and with that great fantastic expression on your face. Great video as always.
The ZW ALMOST sounded like the bad boy for a second with the hot mod. I thought it was way too fizzy until you turned the gain switch down on it then it sounded good. I had one of these for my 800 reissue then sold it because it just didn't sound that good to me. Have a good weekend Euge 🤘🤘
Great video Euge. I've used the hot mod. It's cool if you don't want to use pedals but I'm with you. I think the bad boy is nasty enough you don't need it. Thanks Euge! Keep up the good work. You're the best on YT!
If I get my hands on those other amps then definitely. The HotMod version I have works only with the new re-issued Marshalls (which the ZW basically is but just with 6550s). 😎
@@LegendaryTones right now I'm gain stacking in front of the amp with a Zakk wylde overdrive and the Ibanez nu-tube screamer. That mod box might make it so I can eliminate using that set up!
Wow that device is an awesome idea. I love the idea of not modify the stock amp. Would be awesome to hear it on that 1987x!! I wonder if it could resemble to the legendary SIR #39 mod sound!
They do work in non-master volume heads but in that circuit they will still be LOUD. Adding a master volume in a 1959/1987 is very helpful with or without the mod.
@@EugeValovirta230V Definitely bass and gain switches Down on the HMV2E in that circuit. Even in the down position, there’s quite a bit of gain. It was actually my favorite setting on the original version I made. The switch was something I added later for some people that “wanted more” - but adding more also adds more low end naturally in the tube.
That was the issue with mine, that's why I sold it. It sounded fizzy and if you tried to crank the volume it only got worse. This was about 4 or 5 years ago so I guess it's been improved.
@@madddog692000 Different mod perhaps? Hot Mod V2 was introduced in Nov 2019. It should be very quiet with the added gain. The original Soldano units from the 1990s could be quite noisy however.
This is very quiet indeed. I mean of course the more gain you dial in the more there will be some noise but that’s just how it is. Compared to having OD in front this is basically dead quiet 👌.
DAMN! that sounds amazing Euge. That JCM800 you have (The Badboy) must have something different in it. I've never heard an 800 sound SO GOOD without anything added (OD pedal, etc...) Playing is always amazing.
Thanks! Yeah those Scandinavian ones are the most bad ass 800s I’ve played. Here’s some more info if you’re interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5I6nTYCEpVs.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5s-Dd9C-tno.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_OSB1TkIx3o.html
How was the ZW w/Hot Mod V2 vs the ZW w/SD1 (no ISP Decimator) in terms of noise? Great video, very interesting and the Marshall tones you get either way are crushing! Cool device but I think for the $ just use an OD in front, like SD1 or TS. 👍
@@paulanderson771 With the bass switch up and the Gain switch up, it will have the most available low end and compression (more gain = more bass). That’s why also you have the option to cut the bass and tighten the low end as well when the Bass switch is down. Some people wanted the low resonance and others not, so I wanted this next rev of the HMV2 to have the ability for both sounds.
@@EugeValovirta230V btw after u mention the jcm 900 slx, suddenly my friends said theres one for sale...with el34 valves in it.... OMG!!!! Should i buy it?? Or keep waiting for the 800??? Maaan i really want ur tone LOL 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
Hi man, Crank the master past noon so that power tubes beg for mercy. It’ll be extremely loud (without attenuator or load box) but oh man you can feel the earth move 😎💪. And crank the bass, and preamp and...well everything 😁
Did you play the guitar CRAZY TRAIN shows at TAVASTIA CLUB from 2004?....If positive, how about gain amount of HOT MOD V2 EVO compared to the Marshall you played at that time?..... The show was AWESOME~!
Yeah! Here’s two shows of the several ones we did at Tavastia back in the day: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-woNUWEG6Gkk.html I used my Bad Boy and it’s little brother the 1985 on those shows. Which I still have and use all the time like on this video 😎. Thanks man!
Hey Euge! Great video as always! What do you think of Mesa amps (Mark Series, Rectifier)? I really enjoy my Mesa Mark IV and my Marshall TSL 100, which I got after your recommendation 🤘🏻 Greetings from Germany
Thanks! Never been a big fan; they sound too nice for me in general and that’s not a sound I’m after but mean, mid focused & nasty like Marshalls in general 😎💪.
Euge - just curious: what speakers are you testing this Mod V2 with? 25's. 75's etc.... I have numerous cabs, but all have different speakers. Like to know what your preference is. Thanks!
It’s the Amps into KHE Amp switcher then into Suhr Reactive Load where I have my signature IR ’Valovirtuous’ from Jens Bogren’s new IR pack, then into Steinberg audio interface and into Cubase 👌. The cabs I’ve used the most on albums are Fryette Fat Bottom w/ Eminence P50Es, Mesa & ENGL w/ V30s and Marshall w/ V30s & Greenbacks. I get the same results with the Suhr & IRs and to be honest actually a bit better and lot easier since mic’ing a cab properly is another art form 😎.
I have a Lynch V2, I suggest replacing a 12ax7 w/a 12au7. Then, you’ll be able to volume down the guitar and still get a decent clean tone. I actually use a 12au7 with a 5751.....it still smashes.
Sounded awesome!. .....will that work with the dsl20 head?....man that opening song is bad ass brother...got to try to learn it!. I love the esp ltd guitars wkth emg and marshall amps, that's the sound, period!
Yes, it will work great in those. My original 1976 2203 was the benchmark used for the design. Here is a compatibility list: legendarytones.com/will-my-hot-mod-v2-work-in-x-amp/
Sounds really great ! Your Zakk JCM seems to have quite some gain on tap stock already. My 81 JMP 2203 never had that kind of beef on it's own. Even not with a SD-1 in it. Maybe I had a 'bad' one. I see you also have a JVM. I do as well now, however I'm very disappointed in the crunch channel, which should be a JCM800 with different stages of gain. But it is very weak and not that crunchy at all and comes nowhere close to a JCM800 imho. What is your experience ? Thanks.
Thanks! The Zakk is quite usual but my other ones from ’84 & ’85 have more everything than basically any 800 I’ve tried though they’re pretty much stock. I’ve done a few videos about them so if you’re interested please check out my TUBE AMPS - playlist. That’s actually a JCM2000 TSL. Great amp and I’ve done several videos about that too 😎. And I’ve also done videos about a JVM O borrowed from a friend. They’re all on the aforementioned playlist 👌😊.
@@EugeValovirta230V Thanks for taking the time to reply! I went through a bunch of your other videos and indeed it is all there. Really inspiring ! Actually, you made me rediscover my SV20H + Jettenuator with the modded SD1 I had lying around here (less noise overall, which is good! and a few rather useless switches lol) together with my Ibanez RG2620ZE which also has EMG85/81 in them. Since the amp is "that vintage", I never bothered to pair it up with a modern EMG-equipped guitar. But after having seen you doing it, I gave it a try and damn, it does djent! but with nice note clarity with chords etc. Really cool, yes! You got me eyeballing JCM800's or the SC20H now again! Now I kinda regret selling my old 2203... but as you say, especially from that era, one Marshall is not the other. Keep up the great vids man, love the format and you always do it with a kind smile! Top attitude! \m/ \m/
@Euge super nice little gadget for high gain conversion...do you know if this would work with the TSL? Would it be possible to ask the manufacturer and if they say yes could you give it a go? It would be super...:)...keep up the good work :)
@@LegendaryTones Damn!! I found this online, but I was secretly hopping you'll tell me what I wanted to hear :P...I'd love this piece of kit in the TSL....
@@kazabubu10 sorry for that. I wish we could do that but it needs to be a pretty traditional cathode follower and tone stack configuration for the HMV2E to “see” and make a connection
@@LegendaryTones thanks for the answer guys!! I hope that you can come up with a similar solution that will work for amps like the TSL...It will be truly awesome and I think that many people would be interested in squeezing more tube distortion out of their amps...:)...excellent idea!! Congrats!! Also big thanks to @Euge who took us to another level in creating modern heavy tones from Marshals especially the "black sheep" TSL...I was desperate to the point of selling the amp before his videos...:)
@@speedforhire cause I didn't know that the problem was not my amp...I am in a learning process on how to make a good tone...I love the clean and the amp is very versatile which I love...it had just trouble getting to high gain territory by itself...I solved it with boosts in front but a solution that adds another tube gain stage would be a better option...I think my biggest issue right now is the speakers of the TSL602...
I hardly use DLY except when recording (then I add it in the post on the track insert) and mostly only on solos and sometimes on cleans. Bu if I do I use BOSS DD-3 & DD-7 but not with my old 800s since they don’t have effects loop. So bone dry and then I ask FOH to add delay for solos if he/she feels so 😎. So dly sounds clear after the preamp (effect loop) and in front they are unclear unless you don’t turn the dly level down but I guess it’s missing the whole point then 😊.
Nope. Here you go 😎: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5s-Dd9C-tno.html About my 1985: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_OSB1TkIx3o.html And both of them 😊: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5I6nTYCEpVs.html
I would be interested how it sounds in a Plexi and how high you can get with this addition of gain as it has this more raw super punch in the face by stock. Those raw early to mid 80s tones with modded plexis sound amazing.
Mine arrived Monday, finally got to really mess with it today. It’s best lower gain setting , bass cut off. The other way, it stops sounding like a Marshall. Great little device.
Hmmm...the "Bad Boy" just has more of everything, including clarity. The ZW with the Hot Mod seems like it has TOO much of everything, like the tone is getting in its own way. It was better in the low gain setting though. I wonder what the Hot Mod would sound like with the 1987X. Cheers!
They have a bunch of these HOT MODs, I'm not sure which ones make your marshall plexi get those Randy Rhoads mods and EVH mods to get those brown sound breaking up tones. Are you going to get the other HOT MOD's and try them out because each one is different?
@@EugeValovirta230V yes you should be able to use the HOT MODS with a MXR overdrive distortion pedal like Randy Rhoads to get those Ozzy first two albums tones. The MXR Distortion is a nice pedal not the Boss overdrive. The MXR Distortion has a nice breaking up crunch tone works good with the Two preamp tubes on the V1 mod
How many amps do you still have in storage somewhere? I remember a couple of Fryette amps in your earlier videos, which haven´t been seen in a couple of months.
Jens doesn’t want to address that so that people would just use their ears to choose / dial a sound and not any presumptions and I agree with him. ’Cos I mean let’s say a Marshall cab with V30s mic’d with SM57 & Royer 121 could sound like crap and it could sound fantastic depending how the mics are placed, what was the preamp the mics went into, how it was eq’d, was the engineer a pro etc. Jens’ IRs sound great and that’s all that matters. At least to me 👌😎. On my Fryette cab I have Eminence P50E speakers and I usually mic it with SM57 or Audix i5 👌.
Quite close but not exactly and you have to fidget to find the exact, micro sweet spot. :/ The 84 is just THE SOUND. I have two of them, one with el34 and another with KT88's. I forget... what power tubes do you have in the 84?
@@EugeValovirta230V I have one kt88 and one el34 jcm800. The kt88 one will accept 6550's.. I don't like the kt88 amp as much, but it might be the tubes. It also has the original LCR caps which seem to be operating properly even after being so old, but I changed the caps on the el34 one for ARS caps and it sounds amazing. Anyhow, I was going to try to change the tubes in the kt88 one to 6550, but not sure what tubes to look for. You have Svetlana Winged C 6550's right? Thanks.
@@EugeValovirta230V SED Winged =C=? My kt88 amp can use 6550's as they're very similar. I actually prefer the sound of my el34 jcm 800 but I also changed the caps to ARS (the kt88 amp still has OG LCR, which are old, but seem to be operating perfectly).. Anyhow, the KT88's I have might just not be great for metal. Decisions Decision 😂
I guess there’s TADs atm. I don’t really pay attention to what’s in my amps since my tech takes care of the maintenance. If it sounds good it’s good and that’s good enough for me since all I wanna do is play😎.
@@EugeValovirta230V I think Winged C is supposed to be "THE" 6550.. Iirc in one your vids that's what you said was in it. Will have to see if I can get some NOS or something. My EL34 amp still sounds best with the original EL34's that came in it.
Great rocking tones as per usual Euge. Back in the day I had an amp Tech (jtcustomvalveamps.com/music-blog.html do a similar mod to my 1980 Marshall slp (4 hole non master volume) where he had the input valves cascaded together so depending on what kinda gain I wanted from the amp I could go from standard slp up to high gain depending on which input, it made the amp pretty grainy and worked a treat even on the highest gain input you could still back off the volume on the guitar for cleans. To be fair to the guy he builds some fantastic amps himself too!
