Hot tapping, also known as pressure tapping, is a method of connecting to an existing pipeline or pressure vessel without interrupting or emptying that section of the pipe or vessel. This process is widely used in various industries, including oil and gas, water and wastewater, chemical, and power generation, for maintenance, repair, or the addition of branches to pipelines.
Key Steps in Hot Tapping:
Preparation and Planning:
Site Survey: Assess the area where the hot tapping will occur.
Safety Procedures: Establish safety protocols and obtain necessary permits.
Selection of Equipment: Choose appropriate hot tapping equipment, such as the hot tap machine, tapping valve, and fittings.
Installation of Fittings:
Attach the fitting (e.g., a welded or mechanical tee) to the pipeline at the desired location.
Install a valve on the fitting, which will later allow for the control of flow through the new connection.
Hot Tapping Procedure:
Mount the Hot Tap Machine: Attach the hot tap machine to the valve.
Cutting: A special drill or cutting tool inside the hot tap machine is advanced through the valve to cut a hole in the live pipeline.
Completion: Once the cut is complete, the coupon (cut-out piece) is retracted, and the valve is closed, sealing off the new branch until it is ready for use.
Post-Operation:
Inspect the hot tap for any leaks or issues.
Test the new connection to ensure it is functioning properly.
Clean up and demobilize equipment from the site.
