Hot Tent Camping In A Kodiak 12x12 Canvas Tent From Cabelas

Our new canvas tent from cabala's is collapsing on us. We got a lot of wet snow this morning at our campsite at the creek so I went out to do a little day camping and to make sure everything was ok with the tent, what I came up on was our tent caving in on itself. So I fire up the wood stove and do a little hot tent day camping to get things melted off.

I am from S. Louisiana and cooked with cast iron pots most of my adult life and have always used metal utensils on cast iron, never had any problems. I understand not using metal utensils with non-stick cooking pans because you won't want to scratch the non-stick off, but with cast iron, totally fine. Have a great weekend 😊❤😊

I’ve only used metal utensils and I do scrap anything in the pan that has stuck to the bottom. It won’t hurt it at all. I believe you might be thinking about nonstick coating on non cast iron. Cast iron will hold up to anything you do to it.

Hey Sean probably already heard this from 100,000 other people but you need to get a cap on that stove pipe outside, put some wire cables probably three of them stretched out and staked in the ground to hold that stove pipe really tight. The cap on their it'll give a lot better draw with no rain getting into your stove and less wind damage. Blessings to you all!

I have tip for you as far as cast iron. I was told by another RU-vid channel creator(Homesteading with the Zimmermans)that her Amish grandmother always had her husband take her skillets and grind the interior cooking surface till it was shiny and smooth as a baby's bottom and never had anything stick to it ever again!! That hack went against everything that we were taught by our elders but we took a chance and did it! It worked great! Metal will never damage cast iron pans!! Whoever told you that must have never cooked cast iron pans! Lol

The handle on that pot should be put on the other end so it goes out away from the pot- not over it like you have it❤also get shoe spray waterproofing and spray the top part of the tent to help protect from leaking ❤

After years of off grid tenting I have found that a waterproof nylon fly over the canvas tent with about 3 to 4 inches air space between the two of them works really well. Wet snow comes off easily and keeps you warm as the wet canvas will make it very damp inside even with a fire burning oven/heater. A cheap woven tarp works good but the nylon still is the best and easy to put away afterwards.

Sean, the guy lines need to be perpendicular and at a 45° angle. You may need to move the tent inland a bit to get some firm soil for the stakes. Or maybe get longer and more heavy duty stakes.

Sean, I'd get a fire blanket instead of a fire extinguisher because youd have a mess to clean up. A bunch of firefighters made one which would be good. Most people even forget how to use a fire extinguisher. The blanket you just throw over fire. They are reusable too.❤😊

Dutch when my Dad was in the Army back in the 1950s when they first got to Germany they had to sleep and live in tents the first couple months. It is nice to see things haven't changed much in 50 some odd years in military operations. But that tent living also where my dad had to endure long lines to wait to eat. Until he died he had a hard time waiting in lines for anything.

🇦🇺I don’t live in the snow but here it’s more like hot and humid. But when camping we would always use a tarpaulin to stretch over the tent in case of rain. We used larger poles and tent ropes with springs attached to keep the line taut and heavy duty stakes. That way you can take down a tent without getting it wet. A wet tarp can go over a washing line to dry out or in our case a Hills Hoist. We had bags marked with what should be inside. Cooking bag: Pot, frying pan, Billy, utensils for cooking, tea towels, lighters, water proof matches, dish liquid, scrubbing brush etc Other bags were: Crockery bag, medical bag, washing bag: line, pegs, para cord etc. We would camp for two to 4 weeks. Take two vans, one with the kids and cloths and camping bags. The second with 5 tents, many tarps, solar lights, camping toilet, bikes, pool table, dart board. We were foster parents, the youngest kids were in our tent, the teenagers had or shared a 5 person tent each. We would have up to 10 children including our 3.

Sean, take a garage broom with ya next time you’re expecting snow. 😊. No necessarily to sweep it off, but from the inside, you can lift more of the tent ceiling at one time, rather than hitting it so it falls off.

Also a solar fleece blanket under the sleeping bag or on top works great or fleece sleeping bag liner for the girls. May understanding from back in the day, you never touch the inside of a canvas tent because it will cause it to leak. With that being said, the newer ones may not leak like those did back in the 80s.. I too remember being in those big canvas army tents. They always smelled like an oil of some kind

Hey Dutch - couldn't hurt to add an extra top fly. I am sure you could rig up a fly pole. Space it about 6-10 inches above the top of the tent. Yes I know you are saying, what about the stove pipe. This could be for when you are NOT in the tent OR extra pipe patches (pipe protection) are available. I spent many, many, many a night in a canvas tent with a fly both in winter and summer. Found having the fly in the summer was great for keeping the heat down and protection from sun damage to the tent. Luv your set up! Our stove was not as nice but 30 years of camping I have seen many stills. I like yours the best so far. Have fun making memories with your family. 🌻🤟🌻

Stove pipe needs a cap but like I suggested a cabin in the woods would be better. All you need is a one room cabin with a cozy fireplace. In my day I loved going camping in a tent but the old bones get to not like it. While your young build that cabin. Then it will always be there. Only have to maintain the small cabin. Oh love that iron stove. Where did you get that? Love the outdoor cooking. Every recipe so far I'm going to try.

From the looks like you are in a flood zone, you also need a cap for the stove pipe, another thing is that you should have some sort of cover for the top of the tent ,or move the tent so you have protection with the trees, just have to watch for dead fall.

Dutch, I have used canvas tens fir many years (too old to handle that wright now). Canvas in snow is an issue. Snow would rather stick to canvas rather than slide off. An extra fly (plastic or slippery material) above with an airspace will help alot. You should also tie your pole ropes at 90 degrees from the tent and keep tight. Your corner poles should have two ropes (both at 90 degrees). You might be able to get away without tightening as I suggested in non snow, but, any sagging will cause the snow to build up. Keep enjoying the outdoors and time with your family

We have Kodiak 10x10 flexbow tent. Awesome tent. It's good to put a tarp under your tent to protect the floor, also helps keeping rain from getting under it, not to extend beyond the size of the tent floor. I also found it helpful to put a tarp over the floor inside, easy to clean, we have dogs. Lol. Since Kodiak tent roofs are white, we made the mistake of putting it up under trees that dropped sap on it, hell to clean it off. So put a cool lightweight tarp on top as a fly. Anyhow love your tent

My mom only use metal utensils in her cast-iron although I still have all her cast-iron. I just don’t use it for two reasons it’s too heavy for me and I have a glass cooktop that I don’t care to get scratched up or explode. I remember my aunt she cooked scrambled eggs every morning in her cast-iron pan never use anything but metal utensil, and they never had any problems. But then again, nowadays pans are not made as well as the ones close to 100 years ago.

Dad always had a tarp about 2 inches bigger than the bottom of the tent that he put down first. For insulation and keeping the racks from ripping the bottom of the tent. And we used to have the old canvas style tents. So you didn’t put anything touching the canvas or you’d cause a sweat leak. We could never afford a stove like yours ; so we always froze our butts off.

I heard we was goong to have a storm the week of our camping trip so glad I had them when we woke in the morning there was only 1/4 of the full tent field left all around us were battered torn and broken tents (I'm sure the fact we also have metal poles for our tent helped) we are in the uk but you can buy them anywhere from Aldi to Ebay to Amazon we started out with four for each corner but loved them so much we upgraded all our pegs to screw down oh to help anyone with arthritis or hard ground a portable drill with the right socket works great especially taking them out. Hope this helps thanks for the lovely video camping in the snow with a wood stove I would of just sat by the fire watching the snow fall and stream flow by

For sand or gravel a piece of angle iron about 1 1/4 x 1 1/4 x 3/16 with a pointed end and a hole with a ring at the other ends works very well for tent pegs They should be about 8 to 12 inches long and you will never be with out these ever again. They also work good on dirt ground. Also make your self a garden hook to be used to pull them out.

Greetings, We (the lady of the our manor and myself) are fairly new in the discovery of your channel. I really appreciate the edumercation on getting back to a modern take on how the pioneers lived back in the day, especially on the creek property. Something that I've been curious about is whether the creek supports fish? You might have shown it or discussed it in a precious video that I might have missed? I know that there have been signs of different animals using it as a drinking fountain an and such.

When my dad used to take us tent camping if we touched the canvas, we would have a drip on our head

When u know it's going to snow bring a broom with u to sweep tent off. Make sure the tent is tight all way around, no sags anywhere. Guide ropes tight too. Make sure your guide ropes don't stretch. It's a pain when that happens.

A push broom would make it much easier to get the snow off. Hit it from the inside still.

Cast iron is a harder metal than the metal utensils therefore it will not get scratched using them.
