Getting my gear ready for another hot tenting season. Just a short two day outing to make sure my ducks are in a row. Temps between 19F and 45F. Nothing too serious though the rain was cold. I practiced night hiking and night camp pitching skills. Thanks for watching!

Hi there. New sub. Enjoyed your video. I am curious about your stove. I have never seen one that comes in pieces and can be taken apart and put together. Same with that cool pipe you have for it. Can you please tell me where you got the stove and some info about it please? I use the kni-co Alaskan trail stove but I have to bring it in on a sled as it’s too big and heavy to carry in a pack. Something like your stove could be a game changer. Thanks much !
@MegaWoodswalker
@MegaWoodswalker 5 лет назад
Sure. The stove is a SeekOutside SXL. seekoutside.com/titanium-wood-stoves/ the entire thing plus rollup pipe is 3lbs. I added a 9 oz DIY stack robber. It's easy to pack. The downside compared to a kni-co (have one rusting in the basement) is it must be assembled. But sooo much lighter and packable. Thanks for watching!

I've found that a Gildan or other brand poly tee shirt wicks moisture away better than cotton and keeps you warmer. Also if you feel you're starting to get overheated while hiking, put both your shirt and tee shirt outside your pants for ventilation. I would sometimes roll my tee shirt up to my chest for more ventilation. Do this before your clothes get wet with sweat.

I second that I would love to see a video on that. Do you have any concern of eventually burning out the bottom of the stove? I heard that can be an issue with the lightweight ones if not built well.

I have a kifaru sawtooth and run a medium box stove with it. I also have a supertarp for a lighter shelter option. ive been looking for a lighter stove option. How do you like the SO when compared to the kifaru? Im looking at either the medium or large SO stove. According to their website, its about half the weight of the medium box stove. Looking to hear your inputs on the SO stove. I definitely want a box stove, and not a cylinder because I prefer to have the flat top/cook top option.
@MegaWoodswalker
@MegaWoodswalker 5 лет назад
I have the large, Small and Para box stoves from Kifaru. I like the door on the Kifaru box stoves better than the SO. I prefer the Kifaru nylon case much better than the SO nylon pullout to pack the stove. I prefer the SS pipe of the Kifaru to the Ti pipe of the SO as it's easier to worth with. For the SO I like the vent blockers which allows the vent to be open yet keeps sparks from flying the door when closed which is a rare issue. The Kifaru collar/spark screens packs down better yet the SO collar/spark screen(it only has one) and damper is better in actual use. I think the SO is easier to setup than my Kifaru box stoves but that is subjective. Both stoves are a joy to cook on. These days I pack the SO because I get a larger stove for less weight. I don't own the Kifaru Med but would get the SO over that if backpacking as the Kifaru small is no longer made. The Kifaru large is just a monster. LOL! I home that helps and thanks for watching!

Yeah, the season is coming quick! I need to do a shakedown myself. I'm almost done making a copy of your stack robber. Been a challenge, and I'm on my third attempt to build it. First time, I tried using stainless water bottles to fabricate from, but whatever "stainless" those 'made in China' is, it didn't play nice with the TIG welder. Second attempt, I rolled my own pieces from 18 ga stainless sheet, but soon realized it was getting way too heavy. Third attempt is 24ga stainless, and have it all tacked together, but I'm stuck trying to weld the T joints. (lap joints I can do, but cant make them everywhere) Just too thin for my skill level and TIG welder. Maybe I'll try ox-acetelyne to finish it up.

The cold rain really picked up and lasted all night so some condensation dripped on my bag. The outside bag was synthetic and inside down. I never felt the water but realized it got damp in the AM. I have a liner on my 4-man TIPI but never bothered to get one for the 6. Normally I pack a UL bivy bag when using this or the Paratipi (heavier USGI for the pulk) but I forgot it. They were not all that wet but worthy of hanging out. Thanks for watching.

If you go on eBay and search for LED flashlights and headlamps, you can find many that are inexpensive and serviceable for camping. I set the search engine for $1 and work my way up. You may get some clunkers but you will find many good ones. 18650 li-ion rechargeable batteries are best. 14500 are smaller and more compact but won't last as long. there is a learning curve so search the internet for reviews. Most are made in SE Asia so take time to ship. I have ordered dozens and have been quite satisfied overall. Tariffs are starting to increase prices.

@@MegaWoodswalker The Tut is awesome. If used by just one person there's plenty of room for gear, a stove, a large pile of wood and a place for your sleep system. Once you tie down the tie outs its essentially bombproof. I had it overnight in sustained 20 mph winds with gusts up to 30 and the tipi held up fine. The main difference between the Sawtooth and the Tut is that the Sawtooth has a liner while the Tut does not. The liner prevents condensation from getting on you. The temperature was down around 28 on my recent outing. I had condensation freezing on the inside tipi walls in the morning when I woke up. You're not likely to have that in the Sawtooth. However, in the morning I zipped up the opening and pegged out one flap for better ventilation. The moisture on the tipi walls was gone in just a few moments. My box stove kept the inside temperature around 70 degrees Fahrenheit until I let it go out around 11 pm. I think the gross weight of the Tut is about 3 and a half pounds including the aluminum pole. I'm looking for a carbon fiber pole to further reduce the weight
@MegaWoodswalker
@MegaWoodswalker 5 лет назад
Thanks. 3.5 lbs sounds good.
@ElkArrow
@ElkArrow 5 лет назад
@@MegaWoodswalker I just got off the Kifaru website. Under "shelter accessories " you can separately order a liner for whatever tipi you may have. It appears they have a liner that can be retrofit for a 4 man tipi. I'm assuming that includes the Tut. The gross weight of the liner is 2.5 pounds. If you don't want to drop change on a liner, or carry the extra weight I think you can deal with interior wall condensation by either opening the tipi door or leaving extra space between the tipi walls and the ground, or both. Also, burning the wood stove should keep the tipi walls dry.

I can see why you would want leaves around the outside of your tent. If it were me doing that I would want ALL of the leaves out of the inside my tent, huge fire hazard !
@MegaWoodswalker
@MegaWoodswalker 5 лет назад
Not me. That would be a waste of time and counterproductive. Do you see a fire other than what's in the stove?. No and there is a reason for that beyond my decades of experience (only thing I am good at. LOL). First I removed the leaves from directly under and around the stove 18:10 and go out of my way to say it. Even then it probably doesn't matter as it was a soaking wet November not a dry August. I don't want all the leaves out of the tent as then the ground under would be mostly mud. What a sloppy mess that would be. Why in the world would I do that? Not a fire hazard. In fact they totally suck as tinder. At best might smolder if they came into direct contact with the stove. Drop a coal on one and it just smolders. The only leaves I know of in this area and time of year which are within practical terms combustible are hanging beech leaves because they're off the ground and very thin. Naturally if the season was usually dry I might act differently but it's the wild opposite. Everything was and still is saturated with record rainfall. Thanks for watching.

What is there to see here? Half way in the video, a roving camera, moving too fast, and showing leaves on the ground. Super sloppy video.
