Where to begin! First of all that black backdrop was fantastic. All the white armor pieces simply popped. The magnetic backpack is definitely my favorite feature but that surprise display option near the end was a fantastic feature they didn't have to include! I also liked how you showed options with the older Sideshow clones so the veteran collectors can still perhaps make use of them with some bits of the new sets. I didn't realize the subtle difference in the Phase 1 mouth sections but yeah, the thinner Sidesow one looks a bit better to me as well. Cheers on your expanding Battlalion!
I love this figure! The accessories are great and offer a lot of display options, the paintjob and armour sculpt look awesome and are accurate! And you remembered correctly: the phase I helmet has a red light on the back of the fin! :D
The figure looks fantastic Justin! They've nailed it with the paintwork on the accessories and on the figure. And, the pitch black dark background looks even more awesome! 👌
The Phase I helmet is definitely larger. However, I think it sticks out more due to the slimmer frame of the body. The Sideshow body is broader around the chest and shoulder areas. Even in photos, Phase I clones are broader in those areas as well. I still don’t think it’s enough of an issue not to use them tho.
I’m not gonna I like the side show helmet on this trooper more just because it’s has that more of that sleek tall classic original helmet more than the hot toys. Idk it’s just looks more accurate. The hot toys helmet is nice but it is a bit larger; bulked(phase one btw)
There is supposed to be a red light on the back of the Phase I helmet, can be clearly seen during the sandstorm on Geonosis in AOTC. The Phase I helmet also looks quite oversized like you said, but I don't plan on using it anyway so I'll get over that. Hopefully they fix it for future releases though.
@@JustinsCollection I checked and it doesn’t appear to be there, but the fin does flare out to a sharp point in TCW due to the stylised nature, but since this is meant to look like the realistic version I still think it should be there.
@@Meowtro it might be a light that gets turned on and off, so maybe they decided to leave it off? A soldier with a red dot already on their head doesn't sound like the best idea anyway pew pew!! Thud!!
@@kaydee1485 to be fair it's not a good idea to wear colors that stand out like blue, white, red, orange. But I do understand your point, a bright light would probably be more noticeable than solid colors not emitting any light
I think the helmet is supposed to be bigger because phase 1 armor was made for extra protection but phase 2 amor was made for mobility and easier to shoot through
According to official lore phase 2 armor is slimer than phase 1.That's why phase 1 helmet likes a lot like a bucket, as it is used with a phase 2 armor, the proportion is not quite right.
I suggest everyone getting there’s off sideshow. Yea you have to wait, but it’s much cheaper and you can do payments. Not everyone has unlimited funds like Justin Stark.. 😂 you’ll save yourself 30-40 on shipping as well. 👌 Thanks for showing tho J!
You can do payments on toyswonderland too, and if you're a UK resident, there's no way to avoid the 20% import VAT tax if you order from sideshow. Not endorsing TW but sideshow is not always the best option.
@@hongyauyap Well I guess, but for me it is, it saves me a lot of dough to get other stuff. Just how it is man. And TW only started their payment plans AFTER sideshow lol.. doesn’t necessarily mean their the best option. Just facts. I do use them for sold out merch tho, but for me shipping is just too much over seas... it is fast and reliable with Dhl, tho. But I hate paying extra for early releases or sold out collectables with mark up just because their hard to find, regardless of why they do it, not every ones rich.
Wow! This is a beautiful figure, as expected. Great review as always Justin. Clone trooper nerd here: you’re absolutely right about the armor markings on the chest not being accurate for the phase 1 501st trooper, but the helmet markings are also inaccurate for that. The only canonical references we have for phase 1 501st grunts are from the clone wars, as well as the skin in Star Wars: Battlefront 2 (2017) and in both, the markings on the torso are as you explained, but the helmet also looks different, having blue trims along the visor, rather than the iconic 501st stripe across the face.
The Clone Wars tv show is a more important reference as a game. The show clearly showed that most 501st Phase 1 clones had no markings and were essentially Shinies. Only named characters had blue markings like Denal. You could make a case that there could be a blue marked clone looking like in EAs Battlefront 2 as the same type of markings but in different colors have apparently been a staple early in the war as the 41st Elite had green troopers and the 212th orange troopers with that paint scheme in TCW, but outside of optional skins in a game a blue variant never appeared which would make it about as canonical as the purple 187th Mace Windu clones from an action figure set which have been overridden by the new TCW episodes showing dark red marked clones of a unique paint scheme.
The phase one helmets were always too top-heavy/bobbleheaded even in the films. They don't have the gas mask stuff to optically flow the head down onto the shoulders like the OT troopers did. Hence the updates with all sorts of colours/designs to rebalance them. And then there's the cartoon. But the design is the design and these look pretty amazing/accurate! Love the ageing/deco!
I bought six aswell a year or two ago and just got the email saying they will be coming in the next week. I did push the boat out and get Captain Rex and Ahsoka. Pretty excited :D
The reason for this odd look is that the armor is phase 2 so it's mismatched phases. If you look at this armor the clone is wearing vs phase 1 armor it'll look different. I think if he was wearing phase 1 armor it would look right
@@JustinsCollection but he basically looks like a live action clone. The belt and the armor. He goes with all other live action figures since this is what they mostly are based of. Mixing it together is not my taste. I dont get it why clone wars has different looks anyway. Still like the figure though.
@@JustinsCollection I agree.. if theyre going to translate them into realism they should at least be accurate. Technically they wouldnt be accurate to RotS with them flanking Anakin then
You are right. There should to be a red light on the back of the phase one helmet. And interestingly in the movies it is supposed to read "1138", like so many other little easter eggs in Lucas' works.
A little thing I’ve noticed about the numerous clone trooper toy weapons is that the longer rifle is supposed to have a magazine in the mid section and a less detailed muzzle, while the carbine isn’t supposed to have detail on the top of the magazine
I wish they had painted the black strip on the 332nd helmet. It’s a standard feature and it really doesn’t look right without it. They could have at least painted the rear half of it, the area not covered in orange paint.
Yeah the Phase 1 helmet is a bit too big but I think that’s the point. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the first phase was bulky and big while the Phase 2 was more sleek and fitting. Basically the armor evolved over the course of the war. Also it’s a Phase 1 helmet on a Phase 2 body.
Now, when I look at mine wearing the phase I helmets, I'll have that nagging thought "is the helmet too big?" Gee, thanks a lot, Justin! Can't wait to get mine.
Technically the box and title should say “legion” because they call it the 501st legion in the cartoons and extended media, the clone battalions don’t all go by battalion, the only one I’m aware of is the 212th attack battalion
@@Meowtro Nope. They were always the 501st Legion. And by the way, there is a difference. Legions and battalions have different numbers of clones within them
the thick mouth piece on the phase 1 is definitely not accurate, really bugs me. And the helmet is too big too like u said. Oh well, maybe they’ll fix it in the future :)
The sideshow figures shoulders are definitely wider I think the helmets look to be about the same size but I think it's shoulders thats throwing it off just a little bit. Not enough to ruin the figure by any stretch of the imagination I'll definitely be posing mine with the phase one helmet.
@@JustinsCollection Yeah like 10 years ago. For some reason they are bringing a 501st , Rex & Bly .. they might as well do Gree. Even if it's just the green / white seen in Clone Wars. Maybe even Cody too while they're at it. Unless Cody is the SDCC exclusive ?
I feel like the sideshow phase 1 helmet has a more accurate visor and mouth shape. Also the stomach plating is slightly different in phase 1 vs phase 2, the sideshow captures the phase 1 shaping a little better.
Hmmm the only thing better about the sideshow one is the proportions on the shoulders. The new one seems to have such tiny arms and wide almost fat chest. Now that is more in line with the live action but differs hugely from the Clone Wars cartoon where the clone troopers are much more fit looking
Ordered my first 501st deluxe tonight. Can’t wait, HT just knocked its out of the park. I’ll likely pick up a standard version soon too since I’ll have the deluxe and Rex (when he comes out) so the accessories can go with it. Awesome video Justin
I think the Phase 1 helmet looks larger bc it sits too high on the neck. It should be lower which makes the scale look off. Well that and the too thick mouth pattern.
Great review Justin and I love new the black backdrop! These clones turned out fantastic! Have you possibly heard anything about a release date for Rex?
I agree, the phase 1 helmet looks a little too large. A pity as I was actually planning on displaying mine with it. Just love the phase 1 helmets. If they ever do a plain white AOTC version of the Clone Trooper, I hope they resize the helmet. The only other negative is the typo on the name plate. That is definitely going to bug me every time I look at him on the shelf. Otherwise this is a great release. Looking forward to adding him to my collection.
Wow. Great job on this review Justin. Love that you chose a black background. Maybe I suggest a gray background next time just so the black fabric doesn't blend with the background.
Hi Justin! This is a great figure with great box art and I noticed he has the Tano (332nd) design on his helmet. I can’t believe that this figure comes with three helmets!!! The base is nice and generous sized. I guess the tag might be worth something because it will be rare? That deluxe version is incredible!!! So many helmets, it’s too good. I can’t get over how cool this is. The backpack is nice as well, I do recall the clone troopers wearing them and it’s a nice perk, it’s a great idea to store the accessories in the back pack. I’m in love with that cool looking jet pack, it’s so nice looking and I think this figure is really special because it has so many cool accessories. And a rocket launcher too! It’s such a great selection of gear that having 2 of these figures you could start up an incredible melee and pose it any way you like. The figure overall is perfect, it looks authentic and the blue color is nice. With the phase 1 helmet he looks great, the proportions seem ok to me. I love the design on the chest piece, it has a great 3-d quality and the wear and dirt on it looks right. I love the phase 2 look and it looks more complete. The Tano helmet is great too and I think it’s such a bonus to have it. Most of the time I’ve seen the clones without gear on their back but for season 7 we saw them with so many accessories that we are all expecting to see the jet packs and backpacks on them so I think they look ideal with the gear. Youre definitely are getting your money’s worth here. Thanks fir the video 😊💎
Cant wait this is going to be my dive into the six scale collecting world, just waiting for it to come in :) great vid to very informative helped me "bite the bullet" as they say. I will also definitely have him flying with the jetpack
I really love the phase 2 helmet cause they are sick but phase 1 has to be my favourite cause the T visor looked mandalorian but it signified they were clone troopers fighting with their Jedi friends, the phase 2 helmet gets more rounded like the stormtroopers and it has the widened eyes as well and it signified a new time the time when they kill their Jedi friends and become stormtroopers
Good video Justin, cool figure! hopefully those ratchet joins don't become a recurring thing on the other clones, and that jetpack rocket blast effect is my favorite part
I really like the phase one helmet plus I have a sideshow bomb ordinance trooper that I would put him with . Wow what a great review, love all the accessories, will have to pick up another one .
Something that I need to point out. at 8:06 that is not a stock but rather a bipod. but I do understand the misconception. one could mistake it for a stock but the F-11 First order blaster had a similar feature even with a stock
I'm...genuinely unsure of where you got that from as no official sources as far as I can find have ever referred to it as a bipod, but no, it is in fact supposed to be a stock, and can be seen folded all the way back as such in several episodes of the Clone Wars.
Thanks Justin, I just went and ordered a third one after watching that. My bank balance blames you haha. It's kind of essential to have all 3 looks going on (phase 1, phase 2, 332nd). I'm desperately trying to justify this. Love the rocket-firing pose just after the 27-minute mark.
I planned on picking these bad boys up this year but unfortunately, I am moving across the country and need to save as much as possible lol. I guess i'll just have to cry over aftermarket prices later :)
