If you get this but don't want to use the base, you could try a custom made base from Displayheroes. I was expecting Maul to be the Vader of the prequel trilogy and agree that it was a wasted opportunity killing him off in Ep1. I think he should have escaped somehow and have done the things Dooku did instead of having Dooku for the remainder of the films. It would have been a better motivator for Anakin to want to kill him and fall to the dark side as he killed Qui Gon.
I'm torn on this. While I would have loved to have seen more of Maul, there's always the chance that this could have taken away from the mystique of the character. Part of his impact stemmed from the mystery surrounding him back in 1999. We don't always need more of a backstory for instance, sometimes it's nice to let our imaginations take up the slack. Also, I could never do without Dooku. I love all those 'grey Jedi' layers. Plus it's Sir Christopher Lee.
The likeness and expression (cold, intense, focused) on the Sideshow portrait takes the biscuit. Everything else: skin texture, realism, body, clothing, tailoring, accessories... goes to Hot Toys. Both the Sideshow and this 2.0 are essential for me. Great job once again Dean! Excellent production values, intelligent and objective views, and a great delivery, as always - you have a voice which is tailor made for broadcasting.
I don't even like the sideshow one at all but, honestly, it's good enough. No need to get another one for such minor changes. Unless they make a shirtless one with a newly sculpted body, just a new sculpt isn't enough
Ideally a 3 maul display is required-1 on his bike hooded with new HT closed mouth, --1 in dynamic sabre stance with new HT open rage mouth, --and 1 in a museum pose with the sideshow head…if it can fit.😊👌🏼🤘🏼
Theyre both really amazing. The Hot toys head seems proportionally off. The cranium is too tall. But they nailed the horn size which the sideshow one made the horns too big. Amazing though how close they get these things to the real thing! Both figures are amazing
Yes! Good thoughts on this. I have the DX version and will sell it very soon. I pre-ordered this one because the sculpt is phenomenal. Thanks for a great "my thoughts" video.
As great as the updated version of Hot Toys Darth Maul looks, I think I'm going to stick with the DX16 version. That's just my own personal opinion. Thanks, Dean! I really appreciate it! God bless and stay safe!
Btw there was a balance, so to speak, of having cool one-off characters Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul in only one movie. Whether it was good for the rest of the other movies is a different story...
