I think it’s the expression that’s what’s throwing the headsculpt off. They gave him an intense furrowed brow and kind of squinted eyes, the likeness is there, but it’s obscured by the expression. Also they didn’t give him moving eyes because they made the neck and head 1 piece, and since he doesn’t have hair, they couldn’t make the back of the head removable because there would be that ugly seam. It makes no sense because black Adam was announced before him and he was bald, but he had moving eyes because the neck and head were separate. Padme and anakin were announced around the same time as mace, Padme had moving eyes because the neck and head were separate. They could’ve easily made the neck and head separate with this figure and given him moving eyes, but instead they chose not to.

My impressions of sculpts (probably overly simplistic scale) is essentially: +1 (OMG outstanding), -1 (It’s really off/weird/distracting), and 0 (looks pretty good to me - I know who it is). I would give this a solid 0. I think 80% of my HT figures fall into this category. I don’t own any that are -1 to me. I think they’re pretty rare (much more rare than +1) for HT. Looking forward to Mace shipping.

They nailed Nick Fury so wtf, this sculpt looks like the actor Bokeem Woodbine.

So glad I cancelled my preorder for this! I was hoping the final sculpt would have been improved but it just looks bad, like if you pulled up Samuel L Jackson from the early 2000's and placed the headsculpt side by side they look totally different. Hot Toys have given us great facial likenesses in the past but they definitely dropped the ball with this one.

do you see a rots mace next year coming ? or we have to stick with this aotc cosplay version ?

I think there are 1 or 2 angles where it is close(r). But the lack of rolling eyeballs makes those poses less workable.

I got him because I think when he’s in the collection with Obi wan, Ahsoka, Anakin, and eventually Kit and (hopefully Plo) he’ll look excellent. There’s always a custom head sculpt or I may not even bother. I’m looking forward to having him. I’m also not one of those collectors that has to have 99% accuracy. I just have to like it and like it in the collection.

I tried reaching out to them via email because there site shows the batman INART sculpted allowed to purchase. Never bought from them or heard back yet but there usually pretty good with there stock ? is this overseas ?

Got mine in, didn't even open it and sold it straight away. I'll wait 10 years for a new one, cause I don't collect placeholders.

The likeness is pretty iffy from the front but the side profiles pretty good. I'll probably just grab a dean toliver sculpt and get it painted to replace it later on

Sculpt is a bummer for sure! Been so excited about adding this one finally. Ordered first release from pop collectibles to be disappointed. Nevertheless he isn’t going anywhere. I need him in the collection.

Just to clarify, but When you say it doesn’t look like SLJ, are you comparing to older SLJ as we know him as Nick Fury or do you compare back to his appearance as Mace back in 2002-05.

Awesome review Jedh, I can see the actor from certain angles but as a whole it's not the same quality as other figures

I should have ordered just for the clone wars armor. I don’t mind the sculpt. However, like Jedha, I think the clone wars is the golden era of Star Wars

I’m debating whether to cancel mine or just get it a shop for a head sculpt that looks more like Samuel!! But if the collectors complain do you think Hot Toys would do the replacement head, that they did for Tony Stank a few years ago?

There are angles where I see Samuel L, and others where I see Bokeem Woodbine. I think the sculptor has a crush on Bokeem and his image keeps creeping into that sculpt. 😜 I wonder if they’ll do a 2.0. But what they should do is a replacement a la Iron Man Mark 85.

lmao @figs falling and fly lands on downed fig. Sucks when that happens. I dunno man. I am seeing Sam Jackson in the sculpt. The eyes could be wider though but I am someone looking at a vid of fig and not looking at it in person. Bottom line if you arent happy with it that is what counts. You're the one that will be looking at it the majority of the time in your collection. Not me. Thanks for vid!

Did they knock the likeness out of the park? No, but it's not bad by any means, IMO. Will look amazing in the display. Glad I secured 2 for the alternate armor.

We don't get the cut off hand/wrist? How disappointing. But then, they'd also have to give us a second headsculpt with the "Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!" expression.

Side view...maybe. Front view...NO. I'll stick with my Nick Fury head sculpt (without the eye patch).

appreciate your honest opinion when first seeing that sculpt, it's truly horrible, Hot toys you can do better than this!, solid pass for me, cancelling my preorder, I dnt wana look at this on my shelf for years and regret it every time I look at it, f*ck that!

There are some angles, specially those from the side that look 100% like Samuel L as Mace. The problem for me is the eyes and the weird expression he has while vieweing the front of his face. Side face looks amazing, the nose, his a little bit fat jaw... It is the eyes, he doesnt look alive. And the Ewan McGregor sculpt shown in this video is worse, but you have seen Samuel L's face much more times so you recognize him better and you're probably being more critical with this sculpt. I dont really like it that much, but I've seen worse sculpts being much more applauded.

Sorry, I am glad I cancelled this figure! It is not worth the $285 price tag. It reminds me of a 2018 hot toys figure.

The head sculpt looks terrible. I feel bad for collectors who expected much better.

It is funny and sad to see this review. Normally you diss people that start wining on headsculps that look great.. but since it is now your opion it is the truth?? Before opening you already started complaining on the sculp. The light you are using for this skintype is way to bright so light reflects way to much. And what are those boring poses?? You didn’t put any effort in it and tried to make the figure look cool. Bad review of great figure imo 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don't know why everyone is complaining, it's mace from over 20 years ago. It's a younger Samuel Jackson I think the figure looks good. I'm gonna have him and darth sidious fighting each other after I get him next year
