Always leave the first 2-3 row of threads without teflon tape so the anode rod can go in easier on the threads of the tank.

Just for the hell of it, I would flush the tank after installing and pressure testing the tank. Some bits and pieces of the old rod might have come off during removal, especially if you use an impact wrench to loosen it. Some of what you wipe out of the threads can also get down into the tank. Just my $0.02. Very nice video, and good information.

Great video but I must say demonstrating with that small 1/2 ratchet like you used is ridiculous. I guarantee that would not work on 98% or more of the tanks out there. Brand new ones are super tight and old ones are rusted in so either case you will need a much larger 1/2 ratchet or breaker bar. I have done several of these and the best approach is a pneumatic impact wrench. You can tweak it easily so you just break it lose like a half turn by watching the socket slowly rotate as you impact it. Then I switch to the hand ratchet for the rest of the way. Also drain a gallon or two to eliminate any leakage out of the hole. A new rod will have more volume than the old one so not draining will definitely make it overflow when inserting. Why make the mess? Good video.. thanks!

Great video!! I would suggest making sure a hot water tap cracked until the first heating cycle on the hot water tank is complete. If there is significant cooling of the water in the tank between the start and finish of the project, you may exceed the capacity of your bladder system designed to handle this expansion.

I don't know how much luck I'll have with this but I'm planning to replace to the anode rod on my water heater. Only thing holding me back is finding a 6 point 1 and 1/16 socket in half inch drive locally. I do however have a 6 point 27 mm socket in half inch. My question is how good of a fit was the 27 mm socket you used?

Great video, question. I have a 14 year AO Smith GCV 50 100, the only thing that I had to change twice in the 14 years was the thermocouple kit. I have never changed the Anode rod if I do this now will it make it worse?

When you open a faucet to relieve the pressure, you should make sure the tap is lower than the top of the anode you are removing, or you can drain a bit of the water from the hot water heater, via the drain valve - to enure you do not overflow the tank. It is also a good idea to leave the venting faucet open, in case the shutoff valve does not provide a tight shutoff. Again, that will prevent overflowing the tank.

How do you know?
@Fresh-tw7ev
@Fresh-tw7ev 2 года назад
🚨If you empty your tank below the top element it will need to be refilled with water BEFORE you turn back on the electricity otherwise you will get a dry fire and burn out the element. Keep the taps open and turn back on the water (let it run for a couple minutes) to get rid of any air in the tank. Then turn back on the electric.

Would it be possible to use conductive anti seize like that used on car spark plugs, instead of Teflon tape?
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa Год назад
The use of Teflon tape and or pipe sealant is a plumbing standard to seal pipe, pretty well universal. I would stick with those to be safe. This is not a place where I would experiment as a failure of the seal could cause significant water and other damage. Thank you so much for commenting. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Even though you clearly stated that checking the conductivity between the rod and the tank is not necessary, DIYs need to know that the erosion of the rod has nothing to do with electrolosis. I'm concerned that someone watching your video will not tape the new rod threads enough for fear of "insulating" the thread, thus, inviting a leak. For the benefit of DIYs, the erosion of the rod is caused by ion exchange between elements ( the minerals ) in the water and the element(s) that the rod is made of. PH of the water can also be a factor; but not always.

I have seen people use and impact wrench to get it off. You can get a cheap electric impact wrench at Harbor Freight if you have access otherwise you can purchase one on Amazon (paid link no cost to you) amzn.to/2J0qZZc or here on eBay (paid link no cost to you) ebay.to/2UiKlxO if it works it will save a larger repair bill. I would also use some penetrating oil on the bolt overnight and trying the pry bar method again and the impact wrench as a last resort. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it greatly. 12 year old tank, head of rod is rusted off badly - better to leave until time for new tank?
@KT-kt6qq
@KT-kt6qq 4 года назад
Might been beyond repair. Try flushing the tank and see if you find rust. If you do, its probably a bad tank. If not, then try taking the anode out. However, becareful not to bust the threads as you noted its rusted. If all is well, change out the anode and moving forward learn for this and change your anode every 2 to 5 years. Flush the tank every year to tank out the sediment and see condition of the tank.

I did not drain the tank as the Anode i mounted on the top of the tank. If yours is elsewhere some are horizontal than you must drain it. Make sure to turn off the water main and depressurize the system by opening a tap. I use the garden taps as they are mounted low and will drain the most water out of the system. How many year tank do you have and how many times have you changed the anode rod? If this is the first time your water heater will croak at the end of the tank warranty. My whole street which the houses were all built at the same time had 12 year tanks installed died at exactly 12 years. I bought a new gas water heater with a blower motor exhaust to the outside as there is no chimney. It cost me about $2800.00 which croaked me. I could not believe the cost but I had increased the warranty to 20 years for an extra $200.00 and plan on doing the anode rods yearly. I was expecting about $800.00 bucks to do the water heater not $2800.00, I was flabbergasted at the expense but after researching the cost I found this was the cost mainly due to the fan exhaust system which I still found to be no big deal but it was. As with everything you must properly maintain your equipment or you will pay in the end. Good job but from the condition of your rod you may have wasted your time and money because I think it will blow at the projected life span anyway. Unless you have done this regularly and from the condition of the rod that isn't likely, she's a goner right on time.🚣🏻

Avoid aluminum anodes if you are using the water for ingesting. Aluminum has numerous negative health effects so a filter to remove the aluminum from the water should be considered. Magnesium is a safer choice but hard water will corrode the rod faster.
@TurtleWaxed

Sacrificial rods should be zinc or magnesium - preferably zinc, I would NEVER use aluminum for anything in potable water unless you like alzheimers (sp?) or other issues.
