Reason it stood empty for so long is because blackpool council insist on it staying as a hotel and not be developed into flats...I think homes are needed more than hotels in blackpool nowadays to be honest
Yes, I think Rene might have mentioned that. If the council were a bit more relaxed about turning it into apartments, it might have been transformed for the better.
I agree there, more social housing is needed, and Blackpool isn't the holiday Mecca it used to be, there just isn't the people staying in them in enough numbers to sustain the big hotels, repurpose them and keep their imposing grandeur, the architecture more enlightened individuals from future generations can have something to appreciate 👍

Talking about Fire’s on the Prom. I was there the night Tussaud’s burnt Down. Was in the Arcade when the Alarm went off, I was about 5. Were down on Holiday from Glasgow.
If most of the floors have burnt out, you have a very precarious shell left ,so a high risk of full/partial collapse, & the strong wind isn't helping things.
Developers paying arson money, or more probability of druggies and vandals. More likely to be replaced by something like box Hampton by Hilton Hotel. Plus council's stubbornness insisting on hotel.
I do own a drone, but I don’t use it enough. However, the fire service would have put up a temporary no fly zone in the area whilst this situation was occurring.
Why would an insurance company provide cover on a run down building that’s been empty for years and is unsellable? The only way out is a can of petrol and a match.
Blackpool Council have shot themselves in the foot here. There's too many of these derelict buildings being left to rot in Blackpool. Big waste of taxpayers money & the emergency services valuable time.

....I always admired the elegant looking Savoy AND 'The Cliffs' too.....but have just spent an hour on Trip Advisor which gave both mainly awful reviews .'tired , scruffy , sticky, tiny toilets , rude staff , dirty windows ....etc. Do you recommend any hotels in Blackpool as I'd love a 5 day break sometime this year .
Hampton by Hilton as it's new build and far enough from racket of pleasure Beach and has trams going into town on the promenade. That's were I would stay.
