Easily one of the catchiest soloists I've ever heard, love the guy's playing.

What amazes me is the amount of energy Wynton puts into his playing this piece

This is an amazing take on the Armstrong classic. There are hints throughout the rhythm that point to a fresh, modern approach, all the while preserving rather than copying the exact sound of the studio version. The trombone player cooks with the scat. Finally Marsalis is at the very least Armstrong's equal, but IMO he totally surpasses him in technique. A modern masterpiece. Thanks for uploading it Wynton!
@mortimersnerd8044
@mortimersnerd8044 3 года назад
Adding something original to an Armstrong classic while preserving Armstrong's pure expression of joy in this piece, very few musicians can reach that level. Speaking of technique, Wynton blows a few notes here and there (as did Armstrong in many of his recordings) you just about never hear a musician of Wynton's caliber push themselves to the very limits of their talent, he certainly matches Armstrong's passion in this piece.
@richierich291266
@richierich291266 2 года назад
I think this piece is utterly brilliant up to 1:42. At which point Wynton starts messing around with the rythmn in a very "modern" way. Yes, it's terribly clever but, for someone who likes trad as trad, not at all enjoyable. Same goes for the "modern" approach to the scat. Again, terribly clever but, to my ear at least, jarring.

I remember when I would play along with Louis Armstrong's records because I wanted to play and sound like him. That was my goal until a friend of mine told me to stop playing like Louis, the world already had a Louis, and to play like me. Develop my own style of playing, which isn't anything special but at least it's different. I'll never be like Louis or any other trumpeter and I'm okay with that. Just play and develop your own style and sound. Don't be like anyone who's come before.
@BlahblahMessi10

JazzFan76 while you’re right, musicians get their licks and specific sound from other players. To get good at improv, you need to listen A LOT and mimic other players so you can get a feel of what they’re doing then study the solos in depth later on. With that being said, getting your style comes from all the musicians you’ve ever heard and tried to mimic but also from coming up with new ideas.
@jwmc41

You’d have to add and every night as well - but I suspect you’d still be struggling
@BlahblahMessi10
@BlahblahMessi10 4 года назад
jwmc41 being good at improv was never meant to be easy otherwise everyone would be good at it. Practicing different techniques, patterns, LISTENING, and mimicking is really how you become a good musician whether it’s something you want to do or not. Also exploring other genres and styles of music helps a good amount.

Interesting reading the other comments here to see how Wynton attracts varying opinion but overall admired. I recall seeing him at Spray farm,nearGeelong when he came to Australia. A wonderful celebration of Ellington. He was a great leader, fine musician and a personality with much warmth. That all comes out whatever he plays.

At the beginning, look at that 2nd Trumpet guy second from the right... he's grinnin' like a skunk eatin' bumblebees through a picket fence! The other cool thing is that Mr. Marsalis lays down in the weeds for most of this and lets the other guys have their day in the sun - that's pure musicianship.

@ilprofessore10012
@ilprofessore10012 5 лет назад
This is an extraordinary record of a rare moment in his life when Marsalis, the master technician usually a bit too controlled for real hot jazz, really lets loose and plays the way the great Armstrong and others once did. Heart and soul and the rest be damned, Watch the trumpet next to him on the right who knows that this is one of those special moments when Marsalis is doing what he uniquely can do. Yes, he can play all the notes. Yes, he has a beautiful tone, but jazz is more than that, and for once Marsalis is doing it right. The others---clarinet, violin and the scat singer-- are just OK at best, but here for one moment in time the greatly gifted Wynton really swings the way the old men from his hometown, N.O.. always did. What possessed him that night? Will we ever know?

OK at best? Really? Victor Goines (clarinet) and all of the rest of the band are awesome musicians in their own right. That’s why they’re on that stand with Wynton, who can hire whomever he pleases. He doesn’t work with slouches. And by the way, Goines’ clarinet solo is amazing too. Wynton’s was other-world-like, and hard to follow, but Victor did it up right.
