This is the hottest weekend ever at the cabin. It was nearly 100 F while I was there and it was hard to deal with. I was sweating and suffering in the heat. But, I am so glad I got to experience it. It makes for a great video and it was an awesome challenge.

As a person who has, over my lifetime ( I am 72) lived through the heat and no AC, the one thing I always needed was water. You have a lake! To get your core temperature down get IN THE LAKE and float to keep your head wet. Wear your wet clothes until they dry to keep you cool and then get in the lake and repeat. Get in the lake to cool down before going to bed. I could never have survived without doing this multiple times a day. Just yesterday I could not cool down properly in the AC WITH a fan going. I had to go in the pool and float until my core temperature went down. Good luck. P.S. Take the shirt off and replace with a wife beater-no time to be polite.

As a Floridian, I can tell you this, wear your shorts and a t shirt, that’s normal for hot weather wear. Also, you have that nice lake right next to you… submerge yourself in it, stay in till your body temperature drops, when you get out, stay wet, don’t bother to dry off, you will dry soon enough… you will feel cooler for a few hours, then do it again. And take a quick dip before you go to bed…. You’ll feel much better and happier!!

I agree. I’m from coastal North Carolina and the humidity will weigh you down. Also take a washcloth and wet it it and twirl it which chills it. Then put it around your neck. It will cool you down. When it warms up from your body heat twirl it again to cool it back down. When it dries rewet it. Keep repeating the process. It really helps.

I grew up in the late ‘50’s to late ‘60’s in a large old Victorian which of course had no AC. My mom would line us kids up and let us stand in a cold shower before bed time. This would get our body temperatures down enough that we could go to sleep. Once our AC went out for a week and I tried to get my son to do that; he wouldn’t because it was old fashioned. One night he couldn’t stand it any more and he went and stood in the shower. Later he sheepishly told me it was a good idea. For the others who suggested that you get in the lake before bed time I promise it will work!

I grew up in Ohio we didn't have AC in the house so what my parents taught us was don't open every window get one or two box type fans that fit in the window opening and point the fan so it sucks the hot air out of the space. It does work really good and we always survived the heat waves we had back in them days.

I feel your pain, Jay. I live in the deep south in the USA, and I can tell you that the heat and humidity combo is a killer. I'm 67 and have always been hot natured since I was a child. Growing up, we did not have A/C but now, I could not survive without it! I love cold weather myself and during the winter my heat stays mostly off, and my window slightly opened. Watching you sweat, I was thinking that you'd be better off taking a dip or two in the lake. Stay cool my friend and bring a bigger fan next time, industrial size.

I really enjoy your channel. You seem like a simple kind of guy having a go at everything and that is what I enjoy watching. Try not to be paranoid about wearing shorts and t shirts. In those 30 degrees plus conditions have a dip in the lake every couple of hours with your shorts and t shirt on. Air conditioning will be tough without proper electricity. I would advise having solar panels and charging multiple power stations via the solar power so they are fully charged at night so you can run an air conditioner before going to sleep. Because of your personality you have become one of my favourite you tubers. Do you have any bears around your cabin?

Hi Jay, two points to consider when waterproofing the shed. 1. The door is fitted back to front. Rain and snow are going to sit on that wood and get behind those cross members causing them to rot. If you turn the door around the rain will run down it. 2. The caulking needs to be done on the outside to stop rain being driven into those cracks. Where once again it will sit and rot. 2 small things that will make your shed last a lot longer.

Couple things Jay. The only time you need to run the generator full power is when running something like a table saw that draws high power instantly. As the generator needs time to ramp up. While charging your power packs on eco mode the generator will only rev as high as required , saving fuel and wear on the generator as it’s a constant draw not instant. Even more importantly if you continue to pull the generator cord at an angle you will fray the cord rubbing on the unit until it breaks. Check for scars on the unit from the cord rubbing on the plastic. I’ve heard the cord is a nightmare to change on that unit. Great video as always.

Another cool way to sleep use just your folding cot with thin cotton sheet for air flow around the bed, especially from the bottom. 4. A bowl of icecubes in front of the fan will give you cool air.

Just make sure you remember to close em before you leave. :) The curtains will also help keep down the cold draft from the windows in the winter time. lastly make sure the upper level oof has enough ventilation so that rising heat has some where to go. cheers

I live in the deep south, and the heat and humidity are absolutely BRUTAL. I feel your pain, Jay! Like others have commented, I'd advise you to get small window air conditioners. One for upstairs, the other downstairs. Barring that, a good exhaust fan in the upstairs window at night will help pull air thru the cabin. Also, try to block out the sun everywhere you can. Just doing that will help a lot, surprisingly. Another thing, take off your shoes whenever you can. When my head and feet are hot, I can't get cool - no matter what! Some good, sturdy leather sandals would help a lot. But don't worry; it'll be 30 below again before you know it.
@davea1771
@davea1771 Месяц назад
Some good comments from others. Soaking in the lake when needed will do wonders. I suggest a 20 inch box fan to move air. Combine the two and you'll have some cooling effect from evaporative cooling. Moving air over damp fabric will produce a cooling effect. When the water in the fabric evaporates it takes heat out of the air. So, damp clothes and a fan, a damp hand towel under your hat and down your neck with a breeze, and a damp towel with the fan blowing air past it toward you inside the cabin will all result in nice cool air (until it gets so humid that the water doesn't evaporate). I'd also suggest that you get a camping water filter so you can consume lake water safely. Working in really hot weather can result in heat stroke if you're not careful, and it's no joke. It can kill you as easily as those minus 40 temperatures can. In the cold you can dress warmer, but in the heat you can only undress so much, then you need Plan B. Drink a LOT of fluids and have the filter as a backup in case you need more water in a hurry. If you EVER feel light headed in the heat, go jump in the lake until you cool down, then drink a lot of fluids. If you wait too long and pass out from the heat, you could be in big trouble with nobody around to help. Don't risk it. I've experienced the world turning sideways while mowing here in FL and there's not a lot of warning. At that point it's imperative you get cooled down and hydrated. And always be watchful of anyone else there with you for signs they are overheating too.

You need some window blinds to keep it dark. That will help lower the temperature. Maybe install a screened roof vent you can keep opened in the summer to let the hot air escape. Lose all those clothes (go commando) and those boots. Get yourself some shoes that are open. If you need to cover that chrome dome but need to exhaust the heat from your head get yourself a mesh trucker style hat. Dickies make some nice short sleeve w/pocket cooling t-shirts that are in expensive. Wrangler also makes outdoor style cool weather shorts as well. You can purchase these items at your local Walmart.

You need a box fan for one of the big windows. Point it out the window, and it'll draw air into the cabin if the back windows are open. At night, you can take a damp sheet to lay over you, and turn the small fan to blow over you. It'll be a bit humid, but it will help keep you cool. And for you head, I'd recommend a wider brimmed hat. Something like a Tula Gardener's hat. And, It will be uncomfortable at first, but wet your shirt and hat, and wear it until it drys. Repeat. I'm in Texas and we have A/C, but I've been camping in the summer, and to keep cool I did the wet clothing thing. Works well.

An indoor outdoor thermometer would do great. They are not very expensive. Especially good in the winter watching the inside temp go up as the fire heats the cabin up. And you can move it around because it stands up by itself. All you do is put the sensor in something like a plastic bag to keep moisture off of it. We keep ours under the step out of sunlight.

Another thought Jay, if you took a sheet of fairly heavy clear plastic, that would fit from ceiling to the floor, in the loft, attach it to the ceiling with simple tacks or staples. Stretch it across the loft, and cut vertical slits where it goes over the stairway, so you can walk through safely. This will help keep the cooled air right in the sleeping area. I've done similar things, it really helps keep the air much cooler, easy to take down too. Wouldn't help downstairs, but, at least you could sleep in comfort. God bless.

Jay , when had our camp we used soft copper tubing and added adaptors at both ends for garden hoses and a water pump. we pumped water from the lake through the copper tubing added a fan behind it and it cooled the cabin down great. one line in and one line out , You and use a trailer water pump with 45 gallon water container the same way.

Jay, I am here in Alabama. The temp was about 99F here today. It's not the temperature here, it's the humidity! RIght now it's 79 but humidity is about 85 percent. But we can't take cold. Anything below about 20 degrees in the winter causes us to hibernate.

Hey Jay, i live in the sunniest place in the world, Yuma Arizona. This week we're looking at 111° to 113° all week. BUT...its a dry heat thank goodness. We had 118° last week. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! 🥵

Thanks for the video Jay ! The Ugly Stick was a good choice for a fishing rod. I put a little window mount A/C in my Northwoods Minnesota cabin a few years ago and use it quite a bit. It uses less than 500 watts and sure beats sleeping in my own sweat ! Take care out there!

You comment before the 'shorts' reveal made me laugh! I get worried about you, Jay. Where's those veggies and fruits?!!!

Great video. I had to google ‘stouts’. Looks to be Newfoundland term for deer fly (I think). Oh, that caulk gun had a tip cutting blade and should have a piercing rod too (I didn’t see one on it though).

Hallo Jay, an advise for your boat. Take two log and nail them together with 40 cm woodstump than you glide up the boat between the logs.😊

When you use your bottle, jack put it on something to get it up close to where you need to jack so you’re not having to push the handle so frequently finish getting it up. I have a huge bottle jack from my truck when I use the camper because the jack for the truck but not picked it up for a flat Wait. It was a 20 ton jack which means worth 40,000 pounds. I don’t believe it did not have a problem with two light of jack. And the bottle jack is really good and when you pull a trailer, you always have some 4 x 4 or whatever so you don’t have to be doing what you were doing trying to learn how to use it. I’m not getting it as a construction worker female with some of that stuff

A couple of tips: A pair of oars and mount some oar locks on your boat in case that engine fails. Learn how to sharpen your fish hooks and a stronger hook set will improve your catch rate. Good luck Jay!

Jay, a Jackery 3000 Pro, can run a small window air conditioner for a little over 5 hours. I'd look into picking up an a/c that is star rated, so it runs more efficiently. Just a thought, God bless.

Caulking gun tips. The gun handle should have a hole so you can slice the plastic tip. Also there should be a thin metal rod riveted to the gun so you can swing it out to puncture the wrapper through the tip. Lastly, insert your caulk tube end first into the gun. Love your vids. Look forward to more.

Thank you for this video! I’m watching it while enjoying a peaceful morning camping for the week in Manitoba. It was just as hot this weekend camping , but like others said , we jumped in the lake and cooled our core temperature and it made it much more comfortable! Keep up the good work

I have watched as you work on the cabin, but it didn't really hit home until your struggle with a caulking gun that I can truly appreciate the uphill battle you have under taken with your limited knowledge of construction. I can only admire your pursuit of your dream. Perhaps adding a putty knife to your tool box would be a good idea, and keep your rod tip up!

Nice plunge in that lake will be refreshing. Also your caulk gun has the rod to fold out to poke your caulking and should have a spot to snip the tube at the end.

Caulk... put the wire in the front end first. Then put the caulk tube in butt end first. Good luck. Thanks for the video.
