I think this has to be the most exotic & richly ornamented of any of the large houses I have ever viewed - every square inch is incredible. The ceilings particularly ornate. I can't say "wow I like it", because I much prefer a quieter mode of design, really why i generally love the Georgian era, but this Georgian house is off the wall ! What is does say to me is you could have done so much with that wealth, why this depository of opulence? Something very wrong to me in that - however you just have to admire all the gorgeousness of this place - so much gold detailing on everything it boggles the mind! You could not put a price on this place - just not possible. I do hope they have good fire protection in place!

@veronicaroach3667 Hi Veronica! Thankyou for watching and taking the time to comment... totally with you on all you say. We were having a similar conversation with one of the house stewards and they made an interesting comment that these estates were so remote that they usually provided employment for a huge number of people from a large radius from the property often with tied cottages etc, and that in such remote areas other than farming there would be little other employment opportunities. That said 200,000 in 1720 would be equivalent to several hundred million in todays money! We did enjoy seeing such a unique place... Best wishes to you from us both 😀

Hi Neil and Ant we always love a house with beautiful ceilings and the ones here were so beautiful really setting off some gorgeous rooms. It really is grand here isn't it ❤. Imagine that some of the collection has been sold they must have been very extensive. Its good that this has escaped victorian remodeling. We saw the exhibition advertised when we were nearby last week and did wonder what it would be like. After watching this we will try to get over here sometime if we can as the house was so breathtaking and the gardens looked fantastic too. You must have took a lot of footage to use up your battery 😆 You looked very chilled outside the holiday home. Looks like you are having a fantastic time . Best wishes enjoy your day Dave and Dawn ❤

Hi Dave and Dawn! Thankyou for watching! I forgot to charge up properly 🙃 only realised when it turned off lol... sun was so bright couldn't actually see the screen! Houghton blew us away, never seen ceilings like them... although painted many look like mosaics! It was mega busy took half an hour queuing down the drive... but well worth it! Some stunning pieces in the house and super friendly staff... hope you're enjoying your week... all good wishes sent your way, Neil and Ant 😊

Where did he get all that money?
@chrisisjustme7546
@chrisisjustme7546 9 дней назад
@Mrrossj01 Hi! It is our understanding that Walpole, whilst prime minister for well over 20 years, was one of King Georges closest friends, infact he virtually took on the duties of king as well as Prime Minister, as George who barely spoke English having been born in Germany, did not want to do any kingly duties. This not only gave him access to the very wealthiest people in England and it also gave him access to some of the royal "purse"... his spending was lavish in the extreme... he spent almost £600 on clothes in one day alone... an inconceivable amount in those days! Without doubt some of the money he had access to for running the country may well have stayed in his own hands... 🤴

Is Cholmondley pronounced CHumley? English spellings are insane!

@kaloarepo288 Hi! Thankyou for watching and commenting! It is! A very unusual spelling compared to the pronunciation! The English aristocracy often have very unusual names... We loved looking around the house... Hope you have a great weekend, Best wishes from us both 😀
